Year is not over quite yet, but I've been buying a fair amount recently, and this one is certainly in my top 3. I don't see high grade copies of this book come around often let alone any grade. So I was VERY happy to pick this one up.

I've always been a huge fan of skull covers.

Same, I'd have 3 more Rivet issues this year if I just loosened the wallet up a bit more when bidding. lol   Now I'm on the hunt for a Jumbo #10, such a great cover.

2021 was a year of lamentations for tabcom.

Equally painful were the declining health issues coupled with a comic book market accelerating beyond my reach. Therefore, I prefer to look back to the year 2020 one more time.

By far my biggest purchase in 2021 was the original paperback cover art, painted by Raymond Johnson, for Eton Books #119, "I Killed Stalin" by Sterling Noel. It's an iconic cover in paperback collecting circles and a cold war classic.

Ray painted a ton of paperback covers, including many Avons that were re-used on Avon comics. Most famously, he painted the cover to Avon 222, The Neon Wilderness by Nelson Algren, a jd/drug classic with the prostitute cover. This cover was re-used on the cover of the comic book Intimate Confessions #1.

It has been wrongfully attributed by Overstreet, Heritage and CGC for decades as by Kinstler, even though Kinstler, who did the interior covers of the comic but obviously not the cover, which was painted a year earlier for the paperback, painted 0 paperback covers in 1949 or 1950.

Kinstler himself, in his book with Jim
Vadeboncoeur, Jr., “The Artist’s Journey Through Popular Culture 1942-1962”, was quite clear that his first Avon paperback cover was Avon #596, “Gun Feud at Stampede Valley”, painted in 1954. 

I'll be clearing this up in a feature article on Raymond Johnson in Illustration magazine next year if everything goes right :wishluck:
