I "might" have an opportunity to pick up a copy, cream to off white pages for $33,000. This would be an in person pick up.

Long term investment says yes, but just in case I need to free up funds in the near future, worth it?

if it presents well that sounds like a good price to me considering a 3.5 sold for 36k in january. if its faded or ugly then pass. on the other hand, if there is more bad economic news and we enter a real recession, or if china invades taiwan and it causes a worldwide recession, then prices may fall further.

but i would only buy now if you are willing to hold for 2-4 years. things could be slow for quite awhile. no one knows the future but several smart economists seem to think that it will be years before things might look rosy again.

Personally, when the back looks better than the front I usually pass.  But on the other hand, it would be cool to say you own one!

That's a fair amount of chipping. Some folks can't stand chipping, so your pool of buyers may be reduced a bit when kit comes time to sell.

The price seems somewhat reasonable, although cost been dropping dramatically from pandemic era highs and $33K is still above pre-pandemic levels.

If I was going to buy a book like that I'd perform a mountain of due dilligence.

How exactly is this opportunity presenting itself? Instagram seller?

Those are pretty sh**ty photos for a $33K book.

That is quite a bright and clean cover for a 4.0, especially the title and sky areas.  Some MC, but no creases or stains to speak of for this grade and none in any important places, and well-centered. Look at enough comps and hopefully you reach a comfort zone.  There might be previews for upcoming auctions or eBay listings that could help you determine if a better presenting copy is in the near-term horizon at that price point, depending on your window for the spend.

Based on the comments and advice, I think I'll take a pass on this copy. Big thanks to all of you, I appreciate you!

A lot of this is all based on individual's preferences.  Some don't like marvel chipping, some don't mind it because they can get it for a significant discount compared a non chip copy. Some only buy white paged books, others are more flexible. Just a lot of variables.  Buy what you like and what you can afford

Only problem here is that from the price given, it doesn't sound like much of a discount is being factored in at all for this rather large and clearly visible fugly Mavrvel chipping.  :p
