I feel like this is the 20th time I've read this thread in some form in the past few months

Just  about every collectible market has dropped since 2021. Rolex watches, vintage guitars, sports cards, Star Wars action figures, video games, Lego, and comic books. I honestly can't think of one that hasn't. Good time to be a buyer.

I finally got my first record submission back from Tuned In Grading today. Very happy about the results except that 4 slabs arrived cracked (not surprised; the packaging was not great). Here are the results - all the records are sealed first pressings; they labeled the Sex Pistols as a "Late '70s Pressing" though I'm pretty sure it's a first US pressing:

U2 - Achtung Baby graded 9.3

Pearl Jam - Ten 9.0

GN'R - Appetite for Destruction uncensored cover 9.0

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime 9.0

Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks 9.0

Def Leppard - Hysteria 9.0

Nirvana - In Utero 9.0

Styx - Kilroy Was Here 8.5

The Cult - Sonic Temple 8.0

Asia - Asia 8.0

Nirvana - Nevermind 7.5

Duran Duran - Rio 7.5

From what I can tell, a 9.5 is like a CGC 10 (I've never seen a 9.5), a 9.3 is like a CGC 9.9 (I've only ever seen one other 9.3), a 9.0 is like a CGC 9.8, an 8.5 is like a 9.6, an 8.0 is like a 9.4, etc.

That's a killer In Utero - when I was collecting, I could never get close to one of those when they turned up on auction. The GNR Uncensored seems like it's a pretty crazy find sealed - and with a beauty grade. The slabs look kinda cool!

How much for a 9.0 of the Child Porn Nirvana album cover. 🤣

I would guess mid-to-high 4 figures

I wonder if the ever-increasing need to assign monetary values to one's personal cultural memories speaks of an unspoken insecurity in our society. Culture should be vibrant and alive and forward thinking, yet we seem determined to cling to the past. Commodifying our memories is one way of permanently saying, Things will never be better than before and I can prove it ($$$). The gazillion "classic cars" being sold by Mecum Auctions speaks to the same feeling; after all, the vast majority of these cars will never be used for their original purpose (daily driving) but stored, shown or sold -- just like slabs.

Whether we are doing this as a reaction to 9/11 or the financial crisis or covid (or all combined) is up for debate. Whatever the cause, I feel it conveys a deep uneasiness about our future and the realization coming times may not be as good.

Since the first Caveman bashed in the skull of his first mate and then kept the club as a memento of his young love.....humans have been thinking that.

It has less to do with the world or future not being as good in coming days but that we won't be there, young and in bloom with working body parts, to enjoy it. It's more inward than external. We could have flying cars, Jenna Jameson fembots, and Roddenberry replicators and people would still look back to childhood.

"The Human Condition" I think it's called and it's older than dirt (some of that dirt are likely our ancestors).

Speak for yourself, it has everything to do with the past world being better than the present or future expectations of same, the very definition of nostalgia.

I'm personally blooming at 52, never been better or in better health and condition, running a faster 10k than I was in high school, I can control this: what I eat and how I exercise. I wish the same success (and peace of mind) for everyone reading this not just Chris; none of which has anything to do with how crummy now is  "externally" vs The Eighties (for example), this all falling into the category of "not in my control to change". That I can't outrun 😉

Agree, but we never looked at that club and said dang, I should encase it in amber, put it at the back of the cave and then demand full value for it from a stranger down the line 😆

I wasn't talking about myself, but the motivations behind the feeling that drive people to nostalgic extremes.
