Kirby was starting to do something very interesting with this story.  Up until now we had a fairly simple dichotomy between New Genesis = good and Apokolips = bad.  But here we see an oppressed minority on New Genesis, the Bugs.  So maybe while New Genesis has been so busy worried about the external threat of Darkseid, they have neglected their own second-class citizens?  Not at all as black-and-white as it first seemed.

But the end is getting near.  Infantino has already demanded the inclusion of a Deadman crossover (starting with Forever People #9).  Kirby will have time to get his Scott Free backstory into Mister Miracle #9. But with the 10th issues, Kirby is pretty much done with worldbuilding for this particular series.

The more I read these stories, the more I start to think about things like this. There's SO much there. It just boggles my mind where this all could've gone with the ideas and concepts Kirby was bringing... Jack was way ahead of his time.

With the following month, the 25 cent cover price was finally gone, reduced to 20 cents, but the damage had been done. Not just to Kirby's books of course, but to many titles that had been around for close to two decades. By Summer 1973/Early 1974, DC would cancel many books  both new and old:

Binky - cancelled after 26 years with #82

Falling in Love - cancelled after 18 years with #143

Girls Love (Love Stories) - cancelled after 16 years with #152

Metal Men - cancelled after 10 years with issue #44

Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane - cancelled after 16 years with issue #137

Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen- cancelled after 20 years with issue #163  (well, it would become ’Superman Family’)

Strange Adventures - cancelled after 24 years with issue #244

Teen Titans - cancelled after 9 years with issue #44

Green Lantern - cancelled after 13 years with issue #89

Sugar & Spike - cancelled after 17 years with issue #98

Swing With Scooter - cancelled after 7 years with issue #36

Tomahawk - cancelled after 23 years with issue #140

Newer titles:

From Beyond the Unknown - cancelled with issue #25

Secrets of Sinister House - cancelled with issue #18

Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion - cancelled with issue #15

DC 100-Page Super Spectacular - cancelled after 12 issues

DC Special with issue #15

Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love after 15 issues

Date with Debbi after 18 issues

Secrets of Sinister House after 18 issues

And Jack's books, which would be replaced with other titles:

New Gods after 11 issues

Forever People after 11 issues

Mister Miracle after 18 issues

Other books that managed to avoid the price increase, cheaply produced with REPRINT material, but STILL got cancelled:

Legion of SuperHeroes - cancelled with issue #4

Secret Origins - cancelled with issue #7

Wanted, the World's Most Dangerous Villains - cancelled with issue #9

with NEW material…

Sword & Sorcery - cancelled with issue #5

Prez - cancelled with issue #4

Talk about a blood bath. The 25 cent idea was a HUGE failure.

Someone's reading my profile, I see? Thanks!

Lol

You might have wanted that private no harm, but when it's published it shows up as a birthday cake when you post. Or it shows up on laptop and tablet, not so much on the phone due to boards functionality  :)

It's not public now, no harm no foul, or the bday cake is no longer there.

Still happy birthday!!! Didn't mean to take you by surprise ^^ compare images bday cake and no bday cake lol

Edit to say that I'm about to wish someone else a happy birthday to in the bronze age forum lol so you're not alone, it's meant for fun, I hope it's taken that way @Dr. Haydn

+1. First used comic I bought with my own money was Mr. Miracle #2 from a used comic and porno shop in Canada.

This one for me.

Sometime in 73 or 74.  My regular bus station newsstand got a stack of used comics in, separated out from the new stuff by having a large 7p scribbled on the front in marker.  I wasn't fussy back then - just being able to get older American comics was something.  This was one of the more recent titles, the others I got were late Silver Age, all DC.

Never saw any second hand comics there ever again after that.

I've always been amused by Kirby's metal style fist punching.

And dialogue such as in the "Ride the Tempest" panel.

ON NEWSSTANDS DECEMBER 1971

New Gods #7 - Written, Drawn and Edited by Jack Kirby (inked by Mike Royer)

Cover by Jack Kirby (inks by Mike Royer)

Kirby followed up one of his greatest stories with yet another home run in 'The Pact', the origin of Orion and Scott Free... it just boggles my mind how shortsighted DC Comics was to not see what they had on their hands. To NOT understand how the price increase was playing a part in the entire LINE slipping in sales. It's understandable they weren't aware of the affidavit fraud going on - the greed of the aftermarket (speculators) wasn't a concept most anyone was aware of in 1971 - but still doesn't explain their inability to see what they had here.

Kirby was just too far ahead of everyone else...

Again, I'd LIKE to credit Stan Lee for having the foresight to keep the Fantastic Four going, even though the numbers weren't comparable to any of the best sellers of other publishers - but of course, he had incentive... he was being paid for writing that he wasn't doing.

The sad history of comics...

An absolute Bronze Age classic.

ON NEWSSTANDS JUNE 1972

New Gods #10 - Written, Drawn and Edited by Jack Kirby (inked by Mike Royer)

Cover by Jack Kirby (inks by Mike Royer)

Kirby continues to ramp the action up and if he has any idea the end of this series is near, he doesn't show it. Forager arrives minutes before Mantis' army attacks, in just enough time for Orion and Lightray to take action!
