30 years since the Return of Superman

So it's been 30 years since the Return of Superman storyline, DC continues to milk the start of the 90's Golden Age of Comics for all it's worth with this most recent release.  As they marked the Death and Reign anniversary issues already.

So who is picking this up?  I'm buying the main plus variants but I have to say I'm a little annoyed at the $15.09 CND price tag per issue.  But as they say you have to pay to play.  I'm planning on sending an issue or two off to get CGC'd hoping to get a 9.9 score just because I have never submitted a book and had it returned with that score.

But I think this isn't totally new, or there have been some recently enough , that I believe these two tags whom might chime in have had their fill. Idk

Hello!  I picked up some of the Death of Supes 30th Anniversary issues but am not “planning” on continuing down the rabbit hole with the Return 30th Anniversary issues… will see if anything pops up for sale already graded 9.8 that I can’t resist 😁

Check out the last few pages of my Custom Set’s Gallery to see a few if you want.  Link here:

Thanks for the tag @ADAMANTIUM!

Yeah, I'm a sucker for their marketing.  Marking the 30th year of something that I was around for when it actually happend.  I'm not a fan of the price tag per book but no one said that collecting comics made sense. I'm buying variants raw and getting them CGC'd in my next shipment. Hoping for high scores but you never know, I've been getting a lot of 9.6's on books that I was sure would be 9.8's.

Thanks for sharing the Link.

Yes, as @Brandon Shepherd said... good luck!  I've been going the opposite route, kinda hanging back and seeing what pops up already graded and what they are asking for a 9.8, and then deciding if I need it.  I also passed on a few of the Death of Superman 30th Anniversary books out of principle... for example, MY Doomsday doesn't have horns so it's easy for me to not go after any of those (although even then I ended up making one exception ).  I do have a few other recent books that had the Reign of the Supermen on the cover but I intentionally did not look too deep into the Return of Superman 30th Anniversary books just because it's so easy to get pulled in lol  I was not a fan of the 30th Anniversary story because I'm not a fan of Jon Kent, and honestly thought that fans deserved much more out of the 30th Anniversary/Commemoration, but then I got dragged in by the BTC Gold Foil book and then one thing lead to another!  As you said, marketing!

I’m not sure about DC’s decision to rerelease these s-shield covers. There are so many copies of the originals out there that comic shops can’t even give them away, even 30 years later.

I assume these are die-cut covers like the originals?

Yeah, they are pretty much the style same book but I have the orginals and I have to have these as well.  It's not about resell value, it's about having "all of them"  in the collection.  Stuff comes in and it goes into "The Collection"  Even if I buy something with the intention of reselling it for a bit of a profit, I just end up keeping it.  Having it brings me more joy than selling it ever would.

I can understand why DC wants to look back though, the current Superman books struggle to tell a decent story and the art is pretty bad with "artists" turning in rough sketches and calling it a style. (See Action Comics, Last Azreal series for examples)  To me, if I could draw it with my wrong hand that's also fractured, it shouldn't be getting published.  There is a lot wrong with current books that make many wish for the WAY better days of the 1990's.

I can check see if I have extra. I got some at the show in Mexico when they released them first day. Sold out day 1. I didn get a lot what I did I was lucky to pick out. Back covers even cooler. I know there was a lot of damage ones so 9.8’s are going to be tough. Then again I think I’m the only one that got them graded. Hit me up.
