Oz Annual: Patchwork Girl, Oz Annual: Dominion of Ozmo, Oz: Return of the Wicked Witch

Really enjoyed these last ones. The Patchwork Girl has a fun design and ability, where she turns others into patchwork beings similar to herself. Like what they did with Dorothy's father in Dominion of Ozmo. He'd been shown primarily in the No Place Like Home one-shot prior to this. Also, they really figured out Dorothy now, making her the hero she should be. Return of the Wicked Witch has the best art. Mombi gets introduced, with a spin that focuses on the "Mom" part of her name. I thought it worked well.

Strange Tales One-Shot

Having a series of short stories that culminate in a grand finale is such a great way of doing a comic. The premise of monsters coming to life if people believe in them is clever and I love how that develops. It's just a really fun comic. The vibrant art style adds to it.

Bloodstone 1-4

I found the first issue for cheap. Kind of hard to tell how good it'd be from the first one. But every issue I liked it more. Elsa is similar to Buffy in appearance and humor. Then you throw in characters that are inspired by Universal Monsters. The way it all came together in the end was awesome.

Midnighter and Apollo 1-6

This is a near perfect series. Saving your lover from hell is part of a very old tradition of storytelling, like Orpheus and Eurydice, yet the writer makes it feel completely fresh. While there are serious elements, it's balanced by great action and fun villains, and in particular, Midnighter's gleeful grin while the blood of his enemies stains his face. I thought it was really clever how the devil character, Neron, tries to convince people they deserve hell, so they won't try to escape. His interactions with Apollo are brilliantly handled.

The Tim Truman series?

Liked a lot of his work back in the 80s.

Catching up on some recently completed books. 182 comics so far this year.

Transformers TPB 1: Overall, this was a great read. Quality reboot. I wasn't a big fan of the ending, which I won't spoil here. There were also a few plot points that I thought were odd. But it was good enough to want to pick up the next volume.

Creed TPB 1: I was surprised to see this at my local comic shop. My daughter and I enjoyed the movies, and watched all the Rocky and Creed movies together. I thought the comic did a great job of continuing the story from Creed movies. The writing was solid.

Enfield Gang Massacre TPB: That Texas Blood

I read a lot of comics, but this is the only Western that I've read in quite some time. This was a selection for the comic book club I'm in, otherwise I probably would not have picked it up. It was a rough start to me, but once the main story kicked in, it was quite enjoyable. I liked the interspersed newspaper articles to add to the lore. A couple of issues in, I was hooked and ended up enjoying the story quite a bit.

Dawn of X 13 and 14: I'm nearing the end of the series. Overall, it's been good. The most recent issues had some great content with Wolverine and X-Men, especially the Magneto arcs. But I was not a fan of the new X-Factor (especially the Mojo tie-in) or the alien invasion crossover.

Kamandi, The Last Boy On Earth 1 to 40

The complete Jack Kirby run. Very inventive stuff which keeps you engaged throughout. It’s from a time when Kirby’s art was starting to get a bit inconsistent and simplified, but there’s no arguing with his insane creativity and imagination.

I finished the Dawn of X series, all 16 books of the first story arc of Hickman era. Overall, there were many bright spots. Not quite the quality of House of X / Powers of X. There were some real low points, which for me included Excalibur, Fallen Angels, and most of the Giant Size issues. X of Swords comes next, which I've started.

DC’s First Issue Specials 1 to 13
Danger Street 1 to 12

I intended to read Danger Street, and then remembered I also had the trade collection of the original BA series. Interesting bit of nostalgia, but the material doesn’t hold up well, and is generally mediocre at best.

Atlas has an origin that’s reminiscent of Conan, and isn’t bad.  Lady Cop is quite an interesting attempt at relevance, with the usual limitation that some of the social problems are still around, but others read as very dated. Liked the Dr Fate issue, with nice Walter Simonson art, and Warlord was okay.  The Green Team and New Gods issues were terrible.

Danger Street was quite patchy.  Liked the reimagining of the Green Team as precocious corporate psychopaths, Lady Cop and The Dingbats provided the core of the story, and the acclaimed ninth issue fight story with the two opponents getting philosophical reminded me a lot of Fabian Nicieza’s story way back in Thunderbolts 39, which was less pretentious.  The constant ‘expletive deleted’ swearing was overdone a bit.  And, Dr Fate’s narrative delivery in the style of a fairy tale was quite annoying.

The core of the story was fine, and a decent enough attempt to fuse together some largely forgotten, disparate characters, linked only by appearing in a tryout comic. The problem with the BA book was that a cliffhanger approach was used, asking the reader if they’d want to see more. The stories were quite boring, and the audience didn’t, with the exception of Warlord and New Gods, though, why the latter, as it was one of the worst in the series.

Done. 1000 books HIT. Latest reads include the 52 omnibus, a reread of the 2023 Green Lantern ongoing (now up to #13, enjoyable take on things so far), and a heap of assorted single issues including keeping up to date with Transformers and all of Skybound's Energon Universe, and the same with the JSA miniseries for Sandman, Jay Garrick Flash, and Alan Scott Green Lantern. Nothing really out there, just some fun books I've mostly enjoyed a lot.

I would have been here a lot sooner, but my recovery from the passing of my cat really set me back, and killed my love of reading for some reason. I'm getting back to it now though, just taking it a bit slower.

Hope you're all well!
