Yesterday was the inauguration of an incredible exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, one of the main museums in Paris and the largest museum for modern art in Europe. Three different exhibitions are featured:
- The main exhibition ("Comics, 1964-2024") on the 6th and top floor is organized into different themes ("Colour, Black and White", "Literature", "History and Memory", "Personal Stories", "Fright", etc.) and includes art from all continents.
- The second exhibition ("Comics in the museum"), on the 5th floor, displays some classics (McCay, McManus, Herriman, Eisner, Hergé, ...) mixed with the museum's permanent collection of modern art. Some modern artists are also "paired" with a classic artist, such as Chris Ware (who attended the exhibition) with Mondrian.
- The third exhibition is dedicated to Corto Maltese and is located in the BPI (Public Information Library).

This is a unique opportunity to see original art from Art Spiegelman / Maus, Bill Watterson / Calvin & Hobbes, Hergé / Tintin, Tezuka / Astroboy, Herriman / Krazy Kat, just to name a few. There were many attendees, but as many were focused on the cocktail reception, it left some room to enjoy the exhibitions!

I took some photos, but between the dark rooms, the lights, the reflections on the glass, people passing by, plus I tried to get the name with the art when it was possible, the quality is quite poor, so please be forgiving! How many artists can you recognize? ;-)

Thanks for sharing your pictures - great stuff!

I thought it was interesting how they have material framed - looks like in most cases, it is floated in top of the backing board and just held in place by 6 small Mylar or plastic clips?

You're right, a lot of pages just hold in place by 4 small translucid corners (or sometimes small bands on the four sides). I imagine it's the best balance - easy to do / not expensive / harmless ... But typically art displayed in the "colour, black and white" section is framed with a mat board (including some art I loaned unframed). Don't know if it's a choice, or just if they had a stock of frames...

The Olivier Coipel poster for the Marvel Super Heros et Cie exhibit is awesome! I can't find a link to the gift shop - I'd love to see if it's available to buy without coming to the museum. Or maybe I just need to take a trip to France.

I plan to go to this exhibition this summer (around August I think).

If you are interested and if no other option is available to you at the time, I can buy it there for you and send it to you, no problem.

I was told that some of the pages displayed, at least in the first one, will change with the seasons, depending on their conditions to be displayed. So basically, if one see the exibition on summer and on winter, it will be an slightly different exibition each time.

That's awesome, thank you! I'm in Amsterdam, so shipping shouldn't be too bad. I do need to plan a family European trip for later this year, so there's a possibility I'll get there, but I need to cover a lot of bases with the trip and make other family members happy, and I'm not sure that part of France will be too interesting. If you remember, please nudge me when you're about to go so I can confirm.
