GUEST ADDITIONS AS OF FEB 02/07

JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER

Note: Due to a schedule conflict Joe was unable to attend the 2006 Paradise Comicon. We are happy to announce that Joe’s schedule for 2007 has allowed him to schedule a Toronto appearance and he’s looking forward to meeting his Canadian fans!

Joseph Michael Linsner (known to his fans as JML) was born on December 13th, 1968 and is now one of the comic industry's premier illustrators. His stunning and lush renderings have made him a fan favorite and also a much sought after cover artist. JML is most well-known for Dawn, his personal representation of the Mother Goddess, prominent in dozens of ancient (and modern) religions. JML's mix of heartfelt writing and beautiful art, sprinkled with his personal mix of theology and iconography have struck a chord with thousands of fans.

At a young age he discovered comics, Batman and Conan being a few of his favorites. JML has said that comics helped save his life, since they helped teach him to read so he wouldn't be held back a grade. When he moved to Long Island, he began to draw regularly. Joe made it into the top 100 applicants for the New York School of Visual Arts, but "boned" (his words) his interview. He then decided not to put himself through the daily hell of class anymore. Dawn was born of JML's mind way back in 1987, and made her first appearance on the cover of Cry for Dawn 1 in 1989. But it wasn't until a little later, when he was illustrating Cry for Dawn 3 that JML realized that Dawn was the representation of life that he had been looking for to act as a lover and opposite to Death. Influenced by the diverse artistic masters Frazetta, Giger, and Vargas, JML's art evolved into a distinctive and stunning style.

Cry for Dawn published 9 issues of the CFD comic, Subtle Violents, and numerous other one shots and several miniseries by other creators such as Jim Balent and Kevin Taylor. In October of 1993, Cry for Dawn broke up and so began a nasty legal squabble over the CFD properties. In June 1994, Dawn rose again in Drama, published by the brand new Sirius Entertainment. When Dawn 1 hit the stands, it outsold both Batman and Superman. The collected Dawn miniseries, Lucifer's Halo, continues to be a popular collection and its sequel, Return of the Goddess, was also a popular success and became the first entry into Image's Linsner Library.

A few years ago, Joe returned to self-publishing through the newly founded Linsner.com, which has since published several prints and books, all of which have been successes. Linsner.com will continue to publish smaller projects such as prints, one-shots, and portfolios. JML found a home for his new work and library (called, appropriately enough, the Linsner Library) at Image comics, where the third Dawn miniseries, Three Tiers (recently collected), was published along with several other projects including a long awaited hardcover art book, The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner.

More recently, JML illustrated the Black Cat/Wolverine mini-series CLAWS for Marvel Comics, written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Grey. On January 31, 2007 it was announced that Image Comics will be publishing a second hardcover art book LINSNER: GODS & GODDESSES, to be published in July 2007.

It's been a while since I've given an update.... these last few weeks have been crazy! Starting with New York and ending with WonderCon in San Francisco I've been all across the country handing out our new flyer (which people love) and talking with creators, vendors and fans about the upcoming Paradise Toronto Comicon.

Lots of exciting things coming up for the comic con.

- The nominating juries for the Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards have finalized their ballot choices for the 2007 Awards and the poster and postcard are nearly done. The press release will go out next week and voting should start pretty soon.

- The Hero Initiative has informed me that TALENT CALDWELL (Gen13) is returning for the 2007 Paradise Comicon.

- JOSEPH O'BRIEN writer of the celebrated Revolution on the Planet of the Apes for Mister Comics will be returning in 2007 for the Paradise Comicon.

- Terry Moore and Matt Wagner have been working on something special that I'll be able to share with you soon.

- Less than 10% of our vendor booths remain unsold for the weekend. As always, Paradise Comicon provides you with the best selection of old and new comic book dealers in over 60,000 square feet of space DEVOTED to COMIC BOOKS, GRAPHIC NOVELS, MANGA and SEQUENTIAL ART making the Paradise Comicon the largest festival for comic book afficionados in Toronto.

- Our corporate section has doubled in size this year.

I have a few more guests who have expressed interest in coming up (or over), so as soon as everything is finalized I'll be making a couple of guest announcements that I think you'll like quite a bit.

Thanks!

Kev

DAYFREE PRESS

Dayfree Press: an independent webcomics collective. It's an oxymoron that begs explanation. We're independent because we create our own comics, publish them on our own websites, and support them with our own businesses. But we're a collective because we provide each other with feedback and support, pool our resources for convention and exhibition appearances, tackle group projects together, and help promote one another. (And occassionally exchange high-fives.) Our group originally launched in 2001. After a few months of rapid growth and change, the group stabalized into something recognizably similar to our current line-up. Since then, we've brought in one or two new members every year, and bid a fond farewell to a few who were ready to move on or tackle other projects. Our original founder, Neil G, retired from webcomics in 2005. Since then, our members have humoured Sam Logan and pretended he is actually in charge of something. Some of the creators appearing at the Dayfree Press booth: Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics), Rob Coughler and Ramon Perez (Butternut Squash) and more TBA.

Who is planning on attending and is accepting comics for CGC SS? Thanks and let me know.

CGC staff will be attending and accepting comics submissions in general, but Paradise runs the SS service at this show.

As for who from CGC, I know Harshen Patel will be here, but I'm not sure who he is bringing with him.
