icefires
"I was under the impression that this was one of the toughest 100PG bronze Giants. Very nice posts lately. Anyone have a synopsis of the top 5 most difficult UHG 100 Page Bronze Giants?" People have different opinions. The romance books are undoubtedly tough in UHG. Books with no 9.6's or 9.8's (9/17/08 census - I haven't updated it lately): #4 Weird Mystery Tales #5 Love Stories (no 9.4's either!) DC-7 Superman 245 DC-8 Batman 238 DC-9 Our Army at War 242 DC-20 (Batman) House of Mystery 227 House of Mystery 228 Unexpected 161 (9.0 the highest!) Young Love 107, 113, 114 Young Romance 200, 201 (8.5 the highest!), 202, 203, 204 Last I knew, Greggy did not have an Unexpected 161 in his registry. Now that's rare! By the way, there are 2 Adventure 416s in 9.8 and 7 in 9.6 (9/17 census)

I think I got my prior understanding (on 100pg giants) from this site. http://www.metropolisplus.com/dc100page/index.htm Looks like it is a bit out of date (his conjecture was 416 was even tougher than love stories 5). I haven't seen that link before...some interesting stuff. Adventure 416 is one of the more desirable and sought after books; However, I know of at least two places to buy a 9.6 copy right now. Seems like the author of that article has a passion for Adventure 416. Worldwide Comics has a 9.6 Adventure 416 for $625. If a Love Stories #5 in 9.6 were to come along it would probably sell for over $2,000 in less than 5 minutes.

seanfingh
No and no. Mine is the one that was in Nik's grading contest. I bought it raw at Bookery Fantasy last year when they had a sweet horror collection come in.
icefires
icefires show me your WH38 one more time so I can drool over it again..... My scanner sucks and/or I suck at scanning...probably more of the latter. My trifecta today (I change my mind every so often) would have to be: Weird Mystery Tales Our Army at War 242 Witching Hour 38 Of course, all the the romance books are in the top 20. Weird Mystery Tales - 9.4 just sold for $2,000 Our Army at War 242 - 9.4 currently at $976 on Pedigree Witching Hour 38 - My copy will be up for sale just as soon as I'm dead. TeddieMercede
Why'd you change your post ? If the OAAW 242 is your grail you should pick it up before it sells, if the price is high maybe Doug will let you take time payments on it.
sterlingcomics
By the way, is this your copy and did you buy it for $75 off of Comiclink? Jim I believe that's my copy; it's on the choping block to get cracked and re-submitted. It's a very nice copy and I think presents very well despite the numerical designation. Unless there's a hidden defect I think this one is a no brainer for higher contention.

If the OAAW 242 is your grail you should pick it up before it sells, if the price is high maybe Doug will let you take time payments on it. I was drunk when I made the post. Sometimes the next morning I decide my drunken post is stupid so I delete it. Weird Mystery Tales and OAAW 242 are both grails to me. However, I don't need to spend $2,000 and $1,250 respectively for 9.4's. One thing I have learned is that I will be able to get these in the future at a lower price. If they were 9.8s it would be different. Heck, I may even have some copies that can be pressed into a 9.4!
sterlingcomics
is Witching hour 38 the one with the purple cover? if so it's in my top 3 100 pagers HOM 224 There's also a purple Unexpected 100 pager; #158 if memory serves me well (I still have the 9.2 you sold me that you purchased from Chris way back when)

While I agree with your statement that there will be more copies graded of these issues in the future Im not so sure that the DCSS #4 will be that much cheaper. Its not a niche book for solely 100 Page collectors and the full wrap around black cover eliminates most pressing candidates. There is also a big difference from books printed in the very early 70s as opposed to the mid 70s (timeline of the most of the 100 pagers) in terms of rarity. It would be nice to see a 9.6 show up one of these days however, but then again I know most of you guys are waiting for a 9.4 copy of DCSS #
icefires
Why'd you change your post ? If the OAAW 242 is your grail you should pick it up before it sells, if the price is high maybe Doug will let you take time payments on it. The most I would pay for the OAAW is $500.00. The Weird Mystery Tales - $800.00. One of two reasons I don't (and never will) have the best collection of 100 pagers. At this point I'm just trying to complete the set with decent (cheap) fairly high grade copies.

Looks like it will grade out to a 9.6 as advertised. Have you done business with BLB Comics before? Are you going to submit it to CGC?
