Pressing Books at Home
Topnotchman replied to cigars&comix's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Heating and electrical are the second and third leading causes of house fires. There is danger involved by bringing these machines into the house especially multiple machines. Pressing should be left to professionals. Oh and when you get good at this you don’t need a heat press for high quality results. -
Holy Cow - Crazy Turnaround

The only tiers that are getting worse are Modern and Economy. The other tiers, including fast track Modern and fast track Economy aren't really any different than 2020, 2019, 2018 etc. down the line in history. If your sending in low value books in the slow tiers than be prepared to wait. If you don't like the option of paying up for fast track than be prepared to wait. I'm surprised they make much of any profit on the Modern and Economy tiers for the amount of hours that are put into the orders.

If you go to the CGC main page, there is a link called "News" That has all of the CGC press releases saved.

Grader’s Notes on a recent submission
Topnotchman replied to DocGo's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Getting a book graded will at least let you know where your at, many books do not benefit by pressing. If the book looks sharp a straight sub and hopefully for the 9.8, if not now you have notes to identify some possible flaws. Evaluate and decide on pressing and re sub. -

The book definitely sounds upgradable with a press. -

I wouldn't hold that much stock in CGC census vs surviving copies. The first ten Showcases would all be considered scarce overall, keys like 4, 6, 8, 9 have higher submission levels primarily on the higher value and more collector interest, the #6, #8, #9 are often sold raw in fair to vg due to its easy to grade and lower value. Showcase 4 will have significantly higher submissions in low grade compared to the other Showcases and Our Army at War #83. Census numbers are going to be artificially high with any higher value Silver and Bronze book due to resubmitting the same copy and not turning in labels. Every year from 1954 which is JO #1 to 1959 overall will get a little easier to find surviving copies for any DC long running title. Sugar and Spike #1 I've found to be less on the market compared to the Superhero, although there are only 5 CGC recorded sales over $1,000.00 regardless of condition in 22 years. I've owned three copies and still have one in my collection.

If this is over a thousand I’m confident an insurance claim will require proof of purchase receipts. If your unable to provide this they absolutely can deny your claim, or only pay a partial value. Good news is many lost packages show up like 8-12 weeks late.

How to determine grading tier?
Topnotchman replied to SBRobin's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Your options are modern, modern fast track, or standard. The tier will reflect your insured value, how much they charge you and how long it takes to get graded and returned. -
Book Graded Purple....but...
Topnotchman replied to Concorde's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
What restoration does the label say, a close up picture of the front cover. -
Pressing books is like combinations to a padlock. You have to spin your options to get that lock to open. Once you've put the time in to cycle through the options, pressing books at room temperature which is cold pressing and temps in an excess of 200 at times can all equal high quality results. If you don't understand what type of padlock your working with, or you don't understand the options, you will have a difficult time getting that lock to open.

Slight spine roll

Pressing can completely remove a stacking curl. -
