I know that the question that's been nagging you for the last several days is, "What else did Alex get at the The Eastern Rim Funny Book & Vintage Con?" Well, I wanted to spare you more sleepless nights, so here's the next piece. I had Tone Rodriguez draw in my "Artist's Choice" sketchbook and he made a surprising to me choice. A rendering of Batman, The Dark Knight, from the book "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller. If you aren't familiar with the DKR story, you might want to check it out - it's dark, but really well done and it had a huge impact (good and bad) on comics that still reverberates nearly 40 years later. I picked up a few pieces at Baytown, TX's Eastern Rim Funny Book and Vintage Con on Saturday, 27 Aug 2022. Here's the first one. The others will be posted as I get them in the CAF. Kathy and flew to NYC for Friday and Saturday and went to the show on Sunday before returning home. She was quite happy with the arrangement. Just a suggestion.

I may be the wrong guy to ask. I won my favorite piece the first time I tried to buy one - favorite artist on favorite character. Here it is (click for a bigger picture): That was in 2005. In the same auction, I lost out on the page the I wanted as my Swan alternative (I figured the Swan would go higher). I was wrong. The Swan was most affordable and my backup went for much more. What was it? It was a one-page published Sugar and Spike story. S&S was a brilliant book by Sheldon Mayer, the man that got Superman in Action Comics, the man that formed the JSA and most of the characters in it, the man that did 98 issues - story, cover, art, editing - of S&S. I was sad. Seventeen years later, I got one. (click for a bigger picture)

Re: Artist's Proofs, a.k.a., one time prints Not for me. First, when times get tough, another can be printed. Second, I've never been a print guy; I get annoyed when Kickstarters add them. Re: current art or older art Me: Both. I still read comics and find artists that I like a lot. The board as a whole: Most everyone here indulges their specific nostalgia and seems to like many of the same Silver Age / Bronze Age artists. You will seldom see discussions of GA pieces or current piece though there are always exceptions. Re: Artist recommendations Nothing at the moment. Sorry. Re: Focus My advice: Take a few months (6) before buying whatever is expensive for you. Use the time to learn. Read this article, I think it's useful, but I might be biased: Pricing Comic Art. It's not just about pricing. ComicArtTracker is your friend. Buy art that makes you feel emotion, i.e., buy what YOU like Don't waste money on pieces that you can afford; deferred gratification is a wonderful thing. Save and buy something meaningful Themes aren't necessary, but they can be a lot of fun. My main them is artists I like and the characters that I associate with them, but I have others that you can read about here. You can find a lot of interesting themes here. Check them out! Don't worry about missing out on a page. It is seldom ever the case that its the only one that will appear. Bide your time, build your ammo.

Shows can be a big source of income plus there's the good feeling that comes from doing something for someone that clearly appreciates it. That said, it's not an easy way to make a living.

That is often exactly the case. Herb Trimpe and his wife were to join us for dinner after one con, but he had to beg off because he'd accepted too many sketch commissions. Similarly for Joe Jusko and Liam Sharp. Jeremy Bastian did my CPG in his hotel over three two nights and a Sunday morning (Jeremy is not fast).

I am so sorry for your loss. Just awful. But those statements are the most important and I'm very happy for to hear this part. Disasters are a major cause of the loss of OA and Comics. Chuck Rozanski, Mile High Comics, makes that point pretty often in his newsletter. I tend to agree.

My original answer was incorrect. The proper way to report violations of the CAF terms is to use the Support menu item, i.e., Support > Help Desk/Contact CAF. Sorry for the confusion.

If you are crazy, where am I on that spectrum?

I've been to SDCC once and it is way different from any other con in terms of difficulty doing anything. It can be fun, but you do have to work at it. I caught Chrissie at a Rose City Comic Con, a small, but excellent show, and she was friendly and approachable. She'd recently worked on Vertigo's Fables spin-off Cinderella and I asked for Cindy. Worked out pretty well for a con sketch. It's clearly based on one of the covers to the mini-series. She picked the pose. I just suggested the character. Can't help with the missing package, but we once sent control system parts to a town in Louisiana (LA abbreviation) and the shipper sent them to the other LA (Los Angeles).
