Time to squander a little more of the kids' inheritance. Though actually, the spending happened some time ago. The results arrived today.
Mike Kunkel's Herobear and the Kid is a wonderful story of a young man, his toy bear, and his family. Mike describes it this way on his website:
Herobear and the kid is a nostalgic view of childhood, complete with new schools, bullies, true love, imagination, and… a magic bear.
After his grandfather passes away, young Tyler inherits an old stuffed toy bear and broken pocket watch. He soon learns that things aren’t always what they seem, and that you shouldn’t judge a bear by its cover.
---
I fell in love with it on first reading back in 2008. It's taken a long time to get on his list and I'm thrilled that I finally did.
Thanks, Mike. It's perfect and more than you promised! Click the link for a bigger picture.

I don’t know, but…
Go to Comic Art Tracker, enter his name, and check the listings. You should be able to figure out his rep if he has one.

I rarely buy commissions anymore, but I love the one I just got from Aaron Campbell. Campbell is the artist on the current Constantive series (Hellblazer), and his work plays beautifully in the horror genre. I had commissioned him at NY Comicon last year, and he ran about 6 months late, but this is worth it. Basically, he used John Bolton's style in Books of Magic to create an interpretation of the essence of the Phantom Stranger so rarely captured by artists. While you can't tell, he also did it on a rough paper which gives the image some nice texture. By the way, it was $500 for a 11 x 17, but he has since raised his rates to $600--if you can get him. The following image does not do it justice.
Wow! That's a great one. Congrats!

Re: Sales Price of DKR #1 Cover
If we are trying to guess the price that this cover brings, we can gain a little info from the Heritage archives.
Here are two outstanding images from the book. They were sold about a decade ago for circa $500K.
Prices in top end OA have skyrocketed since then.
Is the cover better/more popular than these images? Maybe.
Has high end art gone up 5x in the last 10 years? Probably in general. Perhaps a lot more for particularly popular images like this.
Does that set the floor at $2.5M. Could be.
Are there at least two people willing to spend that? Beats me. It will be interesting to see.

I love Thom's work. I even have a piece of published OA for Love and Capes! If you are curious, click here. In fact, I like it so much that I hired him to draw and -script the story of my courtship with my wife. You can see the cover (OA) and read the comic here. I'm glad to see someone else appreciate his work.

Two new pieces of art:
- An addition to my wife’s Strong Women sketchbook featuring Claire from Adventureman by Terry Dodson: https://cafurl.com?i=27616
- A remarque in my copy of the Adventureman HC:
I strongly recommend Adventureman by Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson. The new HC matches the French bande dessinée format. More than that, Terry drew the artwork larger than the more common in the US 11x17 format so that it would look better in the HC. The book is affordable and beautiful with a terrific story. Spencer turns up on the Clan McDonald FB Group periodically. He's also at various cons. I've seen him at HeroesCon before.

The last 6 months or so have been great for my comic art collecting! In August, I collected a long term goal - a published, one-page Sugar and Spike story.
In January, I accomplished a similarly long-term goal. I acquired the cover from issue 91 of Sugar and Spike. I never thought I'd get one; they just don't turn up.
When this one showed up on Heritage, I bid on it and won. The lot also included the color guide and the printer's proof. It's a nice grouping.
If you look at the additional images, you will see those plus the published cover and the cover to issue 24 where the idea was first used.
Hope it makes you smile. It certainly makes me smile.
P.S. Apologies to my kids; the inheritance has shrunk.

(kinda of why I stepped back from that Swan LSH page this month - love the title love the page, love the art - but people my age seem to be a smaller group each year)
I stepped away because it was too darned expensive! I don't care about resale (I'll be dead), but I do care about upfront cost.
(and, yes, a Shooter/Swan/Klein page is WAY up on my want list).

I won a piece in the Jan auction, but I'm superstitious and won't post it until I receive it someday!

@glenbru I suspect that the concern is that they were advertised and are marked as Etherium only and not dual marked.
Me? I don't care what the currency is bananas, dollars, crypto. If I like it and the price is in my range, I'll buy; otherwise, I won't.- thehumantorch, heartened, Noob19 and 2 others

i just got this custom piece made by a friend, graphic designer peter bergeron. he makes this recreations of classic covers by cutting multiple layers of paper/board and fixing them together. it's painstaking work and he's really good at it. the result is a 3d image that literally pops out. as you move past it you can really see the space. and he makes the right choices about what should pop out the most, the second, the third, etc.
i love it-
I have something similar from Todd Reis. It's a recreation of the cover of the first comic that I ever bought (JLA 29, 1st Series). Click the image to see a bigger picture.

I didn't buy a lot this year, but what I bought I really enjoy. Only one piece (the faux S&S 100 cover by Bill Morrison) cost more than $550. Awesome year for me.
For me, at least, there's a lot out there that I can afford. -

Published/Unpublished Commissions/Recreations
Starfire commission by Tom Grummett
Years ago I commissioned Eduardo Barreto to do a commission of Starfire and the events that happen to her during his run. So back in November. I commissioned The with the same basic idea. He knocked it out of the park just like Eduardo did but in a different way.
Runners-Up
1. Adventures of Robin Hood (1948) Belgium re-release by Jiel
The film is one of my all time favorite films. What when ever it's shown at the local vintage films theatre I go to see it. Great example of a foreign movie poster of a US release. This and the X-9 I agonized over in picking the 5th Best of entry for 2021.
2. Secret Agent X-9 pitch piece by Eduardo Barreto
Another piece that almost got in my best of for 2021. I saw this on a blog for a guy who worked with Eduardo. This was just before Eduardo died. I saw the piece and loved the composition. Years later I won it in an auction
3. Ghost Rider rescuing a woman from Mephisto by Carlos Dearmas
Carlos is an amazing overlooked artist, Mind blowing
4. Hanna and Jack Epic by Mark Schultz
Used in his latest Carbon book, love all the small dinosaurs
5. Jean Grey Fleer Ultra 1995 Trading Card prelim by John Romita Sr
Been looking for the published painted card art, the pencils is very cool.
6 Justice League of America #164 page 10 by Dillon (Penciller) , Frank McLaughlin (Inker)
Great JLA example, love Zatanna and Black Canary are in the same pose.
Love the Sprang and Shuster! The rest are terrific, too, but those two I would want for my collection. Congrats.
