You really want a challenge? Here you go.
Arthur Ranson from "Batman and the Phantom Stranger" graphic novel.
This is what I call a "fake" panel page. The central and secondary graveyard sculptures, as well as the background, are all positioned in a way to continue into all three panel pages, like a splash page but with panel separations. Yet there are also three different figures of the Phantom Stranger at different locations. So, it may be that the same character is in 3 different places at the same time--or is he simply moving around the same place at 3 different times? Throw in the quality of the line work, and the lovely way it drips off the page. That should keep you busy.
I've always enjoyed pages like this. It's a nice way to show motion.

I was so close to bidding on the double page splash but I have a Kirby Demon splash (with a trim issue )
That's called upgrading.

I've kept track of my buying since I first bought a piece. The spreadsheet has grown in complexity and analytical capability.
It tells me the-
Basics
- name & link to CAF
- type (commission, published page, ...)
- costs (price, BP, S/H),
- source (dealer name, auction house name, individual, etc.)
- date of purchase)
-
Statistics
- # of pieces,
- total count
- total $
- average price,
- median price,
- max price,
- number and amount by year,
- number and amount by artist,
- number and amount by dealer
-
popularity using the views, likes, and comments from the CAF
- This is a little weird. I wanted to explore which pieces generated the most attention per $ spent. The results were somewhat surprising. Too much trouble to keep up to date since I can't just download the CAF data and have to type it in. Still, it's a view of the collection and of what others find interesting.
I learned a lot about Excel doing this, too. XLOOKUP and UNIQUE are very useful.

I've been there. Heck I am there.
I just ignored it
I love the OA, just selling it when I didn't need the money (and therefore nothing to put it in) didn't make sense to me. I try to trim/optimize/refine my collection, but each year I think it's still a net spend for me.

+1 to Malvin's response.
The money I spend is the money that would go to some other hobby with no return so I don't care. -

Sometimes I read and/or purchase a digital copy of the story if a hard copy is not readily available.
Ditto. Paper first, but digital is okay. For strips, it's often the only way.

Back to the original topic, I've vowed to use Apple AirTags in all of my packages. I've done it once and found it useful. A friend works for UPS and he says he gets notices frequently that he's being tailed by an AirTag which seems to indicate that I'm not alone is doing this. At $25, they are cheap insurance.

Yep, I misread the original equation AND misused the MOD function. Sigh...

Formula for OA pricing in the 2020s: (A x 2) + B
where
A = your good faith estimate
B = multiple of $40 (depending on what A is; i.e., if A = double digit, then B = $40, if A = triple digit, then B = $400, and so on)
That would be written as:
=(A*2) + (40*MOD(A, 40))Mod is a function that divides A by 40 and returns the integer part so MOD (80, 40) gives 2. Just in case you want to put it in Excel.

Ironwolf by Howard Chaykin
- My year: Most Comments (1st), Most Likes (6th), Most Views (16th)
- A personal favorite character and my introduction to Howard’s work. You can see a succession of this character in Howard’s creator owned work from Ironwolf to Cody Starbuck to Scorpion to Dominic Fortune (who is Scorpion) to American Flagg.
-
Mon-El and Shadow Lass by Mike Grell
- My year: Most Comments (2nd), Most Likes (2nd), Most Views (3rd)
- Mon-El is my favorite Legionnaire and I’m a fan of Legion couples so when I saw this at Mike’s table in the small but powerful Eastern Rim Funny Book and Vintage Con, it was a must buy.

Faux Sugar and Spike #100 Cover by Kerry Callen
- My year: Most Comments (5th), Most Likes (3rd), Most Views (2nd)
- One of my very favorite pieces by one of the most clever humor artists working. The first time I tried, he wasn’t doing physical commissions, but he’s since changed his mind and is cranking them out. Highly recommended. Also, read his Super Antics which features DC Heroes in very funny situations.
-
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Pets by Jim Shooter
- I’m a fan. When I found out that Jim would do commissions, I had to get one (at least one for now). His run with Swan and Klein remains my favorite Legion era. And he was only 5 years older then my 8 or 9 when I read his first story. That blew me away. If you get a chance to meet him, do it. Look through his memory books. Ask questions. Get a commission. You’ll be glad that you did.
Unpublished Sketch Covers/Convention Sketches-
CPG’s Port by Jeremy Bastian
- I love Jeremy’s work. This completes my original ideas - CPG, her father’s Pirate Ship, and her Port. I’ll get more I’m sure, but I need to figure out what.

Honorable MentionsA few pieces that I really like, but I couldn’t put ahead of the above.-
The Red Tornado and the Cyclone Kids by Kerry Callen (Commission)
- Ma Hunkel donned her pot and clock to fight neighborhood crime. She was also at the first JSA meeting. The Cyclone Kids joined her in that battle.
-
Faux Sugar and Spike 100 Cover featuring Lucy and Andy Neanderthal by Jeffrey Brown (commission)
- I was sorely tempted to place this in the list above, but I just couldn’t. You probably know his work from his Star Wars books, e.g., Darth Vader and Son, or, maybe, the Jedi Academy series. It’s all delightful.
-
Mosely 1 pg. 26 and 27 by Sam Lofti (published Splash/Panel Page)
- Mosely is yet another good book written by Rob Guillory. Sam did an excellent job with the visuals. In these pages, you see our hero gain his powers and deal with his first foe. Buy it, you will enjoy it.
-
Young Justice 27 pg 5 by Todd Nauck (published splash)
- I enjoyed Todd’s work on Impulse and Young Justice a lot and I love group shots. This scratched a real itch for me.

Really like this one! Jeffrey has a very distinctive style and it works perfect here!
Thanks! I think he does excellent work and he has a good sense of humor.
I have one other piece by him that amuses me as well. Click to embiggen.
I made a fake faux S&S 100 cover out of it using a different SW based image taken from the internet (my bad) that seemed appropriate. My image manipulation skills are rather limited.

I'm a Kickstarter Superbacker which means I spend way too much money on Kickstarter projects in the Comics section. This is a fact.
It's a matter of opinion as to whether or not a particular purchase is worth it. In my opinion, Mike Kunkel delivers the goods with his books.
In this case the book is Ham and Eggs. It features the story of two brothers in a small town. Think Abbott and Costello and you'll get a bit of the feel for the characters.
Anyway, Ham is short on cash and gets involved with a loan shark and things get dangerously funny.
You can see my Ham and Eggs here: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1980991

I have a list - to get anything on it will require selling a lot of comic books!
In the reasonably possible:
- Aparo B&B page (art and letters by Jim)
In the Serious Stretch Goals category, we have:
- Ditko Creeper
- Everett Sub-Mariner page
- Kirby Thor or New Gods page
- Rogers Detective (Batman) page from his wonderful run with Steve Englehart and Terry Austin
- Swan/Klein Superman
- Swan/Klein LSH page
Special cases:
-
The splash to JLA 29 (1st series) or the cover, but I'd prefer the splash. (The splash sold by auction at Heritage. Maggie Thompson told me it and two other pages had been stuck in a drawer since she and Don were given it by Julius Schwartz.)
- It's up for auction again, but sold for 50K last time. My rich uncle would have to die for me to buy it if I had a rich uncle.
- Cover to The Official Legion of Super-Heroes Index #1. The cover to #2 would work, but it's in David Mandel's collection and I doubt that I could pry it loose. The cover to #1 belongs to Mark Waid, but he loaned it to a friend to study and said friend thinks he owns it.
- A published Scribbly page - I've seen one in 18 years of collecting.
Comic Strips:
- Peanuts by Charles Schulz
- Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson
