almost all of my art is on my walls so I can appreciate it daily.

I should have mentioned this on my first post. I my best pieces framed and hanging, but I also have a book stand upon which I place a portfolio. Each day, I turn the page to see new art. It works for me. Here are some pictures of the book stand in use:

My money is worth the same as what an artist is making from his “paying work,” despite how some artists have tried to make it seem worth less.

Michael, I doubt it's a monetary difference. I suspect it is a matter of who will give them the most repeat business. A publisher will win that battle against a commissioner who is likely to buy only once. So, #pages * page rate > 1 commission.

  3. A new addition to my comic strip collection and like many others, it is kid centered. In this case, it's Russell (Red) McLean and his dog Rover. Rover was a stray who saved Red's life by pulling him from an on-coming car. They have been tight ever since. It's written and drawn by Brian Basset.

Terrific strip in my opinion. Hope you enjoy this example. You can see the color guide and the published form on the link.

  4. Facebook has a large number of groups that address comic art both published and commissioned. You can always ask on those groups for opinions. However, prepare for odd/funny answers, unsolicited offers, and the usual social media snark.

  5. Notes:

    • Once again the one year limit to edit a post has hit. As with my other threads, I will create a new thread with the same title plus the current year. The previous threads are:
    • I will update this post on the thread with new galleries as they noted in the comments or other input. This post will always have the latest.

    -----

Below is the latest list of known Themed Art Collections. It is not exhaustive, but there are a lot of great collections to visit. The only real rule is that the theme be in a gallery. If a theme is scattered across multiple galleries, I won't post the link because it’s too hard to see the theme. Sorry about that. Otherwise, assuming it’s not illegal, immoral, or hate filled (my judgement), I'm going to list it.

I grouped these by source of inspiration as follows:

    • Concepts - The idea dominates the contents
    • Cover and Panel Page Recreations
    • Historical or Historical Fiction - The era or event dominates the contents
    • Jams – Various artists combining to create the commission piece
    • Literature - Non-comic literature drives the contents
    • Movies and Actors - Cinema and those that create it drive the contents
    • Music and Musicians
    • Single Characters
    • Re-assembled Books or Book Sections
    • Teams and Team-Ups

If anyone can suggest better categorizations or just doesn't like where something is let me know and I'll work on it.

Also, where possible, I used real names (first and last). If anyone objects, please let me know.

BTW, it is sheer chance that my gallery comes up first, really!

    Concept Based

    Alex Johnson’s Artists & Main Characters - http://cafurl.com?i=25626
My collection consists of the artists and characters combinations that I’ve enjoyed the most over the years. Things like: Cardy/Bat Lash, Cardy/Teen Titans, Kubert/Hawkman, Kubert/Sgt. Rock, Mayer/Sugar & Spike, Parent – Archie, Swan/Legion, Swan/Superman, Woggon/Katy Keene, Zahler/Love and Capes. You get the drift.

Alex Johnson's Arm Wrestling with Heroes - http://cafurl.com?i=23486
I really dislike pin-up images in my collection to such an extent that I needed an idea that I could reuse when commissioning people when I don't have a better idea.
This one came to me when J. Scott Campbell came to my LCS (Bedrock City Comic Company in Houston) and was willing to take commissions for delivery when he showed up. I couldn't think of a good idea and blew it off.  Later, it occurred to me that Caitlin from Gen13 arm-wrestling with the Silver Age Supergirl would have been fun. That led to this theme.

    Alex Johnson's Sugar and Spike #100 Covers - http://cafurl.com?i=24453
Sheldon Mayer's S&S is a marvel, but due to eye problems he had to stop with issue 98. Later, DC did a 99th issue reprinting stories that he did for outside the US once his eyes were healed. However, there's never been a 100th issue. While waiting for it, I'm creating the variant covers.

    Alex Johnson's Legion of Super-Heroes commissions - http://cafurl.com?i=25625
The LSH is my favorite team and it's relatively easy to think of commission ideas with such a large crew.

Andrew Rosenbarger's (Stray Toaster Project's) Stray Toasters https://www.facebook.com/straytoastersproject
To quote the page's proprietor - "Stray Toasters are little doodles you create to refocus and balance yourself against the world.  Why a toaster? Because toasters are easy to draw and make tasty comfort food. And its namesake is from one of my favorite comic creators of all time." I can think of nothing of value to add.

    Anthony Carpenter’s Poster Wall - https://web.archive.org/web/20170701191903/http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=8882
This is based on the famous Uncanny X-Men #141 (Days of Future Past) Cover. Anthony has sold most of these so I'm referring to a Wayback Machine's version where you can see many of them. Look for the "Poster Wall" galleries.

    Art Shotten's Captain America 248 by ... - http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?GSub=85681

The villains have won and they are proud to show off their trophies.

    Damon Owen’s Dead Universes - http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?GSub=59774
Collection of commissions featuring characters whose publishers have passed on.

Dave Morris has four collections, but they aren't segregated - http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=149
The themes are: Art NouveauDancing GirlsDevil Girls, and Hula Island Girls. They used to be segregated, but that site is no longer updated. Here it is: http://davesart.com.

    Eric Agena’s Hawaii Themed Commissions - http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?GSub=102010

Gal Schwartz' Brick Walls - http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryFavoritesRoom.asp?GFav=4604

Jeff Singh' Jungle Girl - http://www.art4comics.com/junglegallery.htm
    Jungle women of all sorts.

    John Joshua's All-Star Squadron Continuation Project - https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=190068
John wrote: "My All-Star Squadron Continuation Project commissions are 96 (currently) covers which continue that series, all based on the covers of comics which Roy Thomas wrote, plotted or scripted." and later added "Incidentally, the All_Star Squadron covers have Roy Thomas' seal of approval - he found out about them back in 2020, contacted me, and has since printed almost 40 of them in two issues of Alter Ego - issues #175 and #180 - alongside some background material from me.

    John Joshua's DC Comics Presents - https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=226743
John wrote, "A little three-issue side project just to get DC Presents to issue #100."

    John Joshua's Golden Age Team-Up Project - https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=219648
John wrote, "Golden Age Team-Up Project has 34 (currently) The Brave & The Bold covers, based on the idea that DC didn't cancel B&B but handed it over to Roy Thomas (then Earth 2 Editor) asking him to oversee the series using the Golden Age Batman along side other 1940s/early 1950s guest-stars."

    John Joshua's One More Issue - https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=234923
John wrote, "Commissions imagining what might have happened if the Golden Age characters had appeared in - as the name suggests - one more issue after they faded from sight in the late 1940s or early 1950s."

    John Joshua's Stan & Jack's Silver Age Doom Patrol - https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=216042
John wrote that these were "based on the idea that Martin Goodman closed down Marvel Comics in 1960, leading to Lee & Kirby going to National, and eventually working on Arnold Drake's concept for the Doom Patrol, all based on Lee/Kirby early Marvel covers."

John Nacinovich's The Search for Superman https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=173439
Superman has been taken. No one is sure where he is, or who is behind this kidnapping. The call has gone out through the multiverse for assistance in the Search for Superman. However, Superman is not a model prisoner and has engineered numerous escape attempts. During his brief moments of freedom he has been able to leave a sign that he was in that place (or time) in the hope that his allies will be able to use the information and track him down. His unknown captors continue to transport him across multiple dimensions to keep him hidden while seeking a way to destroy him once and for all. There are also forces battling against Superman's allies in an attempt to ensure that Superman is never located. The search is on and these pieces will tell the story.

Josh says, "Inspired by my love for the Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, the "Iron" Throne was a concept I shared with artist Scott West. He then designed and drew a brilliant piece featuring the Mandarin sitting on the throne. Not content to leave well enough alone, I thought it would be fun for other Marvel heroes and villains to lay claim to the throne."

    Philip D. Anderson’s Monkey’s & Apes sketchbook - https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=8413
Philip wrote, I wanted to start a theme book & Mark Schultz was starting the mythology themed book for me, but I knew that would take a while.  So, I decided a second themed sketchbook was in order & that all artists seemed to like drawing apes & moneys.  I didn’t know it at the time, but monkeys were a symbol for artists during the renaissance.  Jeff Parker killed it with the opening page.”

An older signed copy of Thorn is going up for auction October 26th on Heritage.

I bid $7K for one within the last year and lost; the 5 copies in the Kickstarter went for $10K.

Frankly, I'm glad that I lost since Jeff is doing the reprint and it will have the full run of the strip. The old one had only 1 year.

  7. Is everyone aware of Jeff's Thorn Kickstarter? The most expensive perk is a $10K copy of the original Thorn book which does not have as much material as the new one. I'll be interested in seeing if they are all bought.

I confess I was a hard sell at first,” says cartoonist Smith, “Talk of reprinting the THORN comics has always been a non-starter for me. Obviously, this was a crucial stage in the development of BONE, but I always held off because, well, I didn’t think they were very good. In fact, I had an unshakable idea that they were terrible!
When staff members Kathleen Glosan and Tom Gaadt piled on, I gave in."

“It meant I would have to read the entire run of the college strips for the first time in decades!
And I have to admit…I was surprised. It was not what I remembered at all.”

The comic strips we are collecting are an early version of BONE called THORN that was written for a college audience a lifetime ago. THORN appeared  in the pages of The Ohio State University’s student newspaper The Lantern. This is the first collection of the complete run of those proto-BONE strips, most of which haven’t seen the light of day for more than 40 years.

One of the fun things I discovered is that Fone Bone and Thorn in the comic strip discuss current events -- I was surprised to see many are the same issues we are still discussing today.

Besides the comic strips themselves (which includes the redrawn Syndicate submissions), there is a contexual essay by the Founding Curator of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, Lucy Shelton Caswell, an interview with Jeff Smith by German comics expert Guido Weisshahn, and the final section of the book, called Tales from the Inkpot, shares some recently discovered drawings of Fone Bone and other early images that had been hiding in Jeff’s parent’s closets for decades. They show the evolution of the characters from childhood through high school and beyond. There’s even the first drawings of Thorn and the Great Red Dragon!

I guess.   There was a lot of rapid inflation in the 70s so maybe between inflation and being very early in his career, it would be possible.

Just kind of shocking at that's literally 1/10 of what people were being paid 15 years later.

During that period, I had a boss apologize for giving me a 10% raise (I'd been at the company 6 months) because it was so low.

That should give you a feel for inflation at the time. By 1984, when we bought our house, the going home mortgage was 14%. I was able to assume a small first mortgage at 8% and my seller financed the balance at 12%. That might provide some context as well.
