  1. Looks like another great resource for PreCode horror! I'd say the price is worth it for the DVD alone. Between this book and Four Color Fear, it might start another craze for these books! Hopefully it won't make the prices for these PreCodes explode.
  2. It starts tomorrow! I made a list awhile ago featuring my favorite PreCode Horror covers. These were 25 of the craziest, weirdest, and most hideous PreCode Horror books I could find. The list was strictly set at 25 covers and even though there were a few additions and subtractions, the list remained the same. Recently, I finished the task of assembling all of these books and I thought it would be appropriate for the week leading up to Halloween to share it with you, my fellow depraved newsprint-smelling PreCoders! I'll start tomorrow with the first 5 and will continue to post 5 covers a day until the list is wrapped up on Friday! "The Terrible 25" begins tomorrow! Stay tuned....
  3. Both Eerie #1's are great books! I believe the interior stories are the same for both.
  4. Welcome to the boards Chupper! I think another boardie or two was there at that same auction. I recognized some of the same books. Here's a link to the "Have a Cigar!" thread here in GA: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=170288&fpart=2097 Looks like it was fun! There are definitely some books I would of loved to of bid on.
  5. What a cover! Definitely goes on the wantlist!! So many good books being posted lately (especially October's wicked six!) Must be the season or the fact that these books still really hold up well after 50+ years. I think there is something to be said for having no filter on the writers and artists. I understand the more artistic approach that the Comics Code forces upon creators and the ways to get around censorship, but to me, there's just something special about their wild approach to the horror subject. Even the Creepy and Eerie magazines (which I think are amazing) seem to lack something compared to their 1950's ancestors. I also like the draftsmanship back then....I think it was more common to find illustrators with a better grasp on basic drawing skills all around... Who knows? I could just be a fan of this time period and the birth of horror stories in comics.
  6. You're not alone. I always enjoy the roughs and seeing the process. You can tell from the notes that some for these covers where open for input from Lee Elias too. That's great. Thanks for posting the link! Still reading through Four Color Fear? I'm enjoying all of the content in this book. Did you see the cool footnotes next to the thumbnail-size covers in the back?
  7. I got mine yesterday. Wow. What a collection. This is required for the bookshelf of any PreCode Horror fan. Very very nice reproductions from the original comic pages themselves. The extra material is amazing too. Not only is is packed with some of the best non-EC PreCode stories, they have a sweet cover gallery, along with some footnotes and articles about the books, stories, and publishers. In the last couple of years, I have made it my point to gather as much material on this part of comics history. This book had a lot of notes and stories I have never heard. I give it 4 eyeballs out of 4! This book also sports a very nice cover featuring art from one of my personal favorites, "The Corpse That Came To Dinner", drawn by Reed Crandall from Standard's Out Of Shadows #9
  8. Nice book Jayman! I've really become a fan of these ACE precodes. Not only do you get a nice Lou Cameron story once in awhile, there are also plenty of other great artists I haven't seen before. It's always cool seeing a fresh approach on how to draw a horror comic.
  9. You think I can afford beans after this book? Nah... I'm eating boiled copies of 1990's comics. ....They ain't too bad with some mustard.... as soon as I can save up for a jar. Thanks Jayman and Matthew! Like you said, these are two biggies for the collection and it does seem like I have been on a rampage lately. This narrows down my list of Key PreCode horror books though and I've really been trying to focus on just the keys for awhile now. About a year ago I created a list of my personal favorite covers and decided to go after those. I'm planning to do a post in this thread when the list is completed showing my top 25!
  10. Thanks Andy! Yeah it seems WM #5 is just one of those keys that always demands big bucks. Like I mentioned before, I am a fan of that 6.0 you got from Aaron!
  11. Funny how life goes sometimes. I was bummed about missing out on this book (WM #5) since I picked up the Weird Mysteries #4 from this same collection. I thought the two would make a great set. It turns out that the final bidder bailed on the win and the book was going to be put back up. The seller and I have been corresponding and when I found out this book was available again, we agreed on a deal for it. I didn't have to pay the final original price but man was it pricey! That said, after the book arrived I realized that the date stamp on the cover is one day before my twins' birthday!! Pretty cool considering that the Weird Mysteries #4 from the same collection sports a birthday stamp of an Aunt. Now that's a Weird Mystery! Anyway, The WM #5 has everything I could ask for in a midgrade copy.. bought directly from original owner, significant date stamp, and white pages... Can't wait to crack these books out and finally read those Wolverton stories!!
  12. That cover could also be seen as a person being blown up by a clock that had a bomb in it. The gear, bolt and other speck could simply be shrapnel form the clock bomb. See, I need to get out more. This is the kind of stuff I think about after spending all day in the house drawing.
  13. That's a great cover. Nothing like a nice little bedtime story!
  14. Got this a few weeks ago and posted over in the undead thread but I'm still on cloud 9 to have a copy!
  15. Wow - only 1 comment on this book. Congrats on a beauty!
  16. Woah! Nice one Jayman. I haven't seen that one before. Again, I'd have to go with the Voodoo design. Red dress and Red eyed monster.....Much better!!
  17. Can't go wrong with high grade Atlas! Beauty of a book!
  18. Not sure if this has been posted or not. I thought you undeadheads might find this swipe cool. The Bomber cover was done first, though I must admit, I like the Horrific version better myself.
  19. Nice books Jayman! Those are some beauties. I agree about that Astonishing cover, though that book does seem to fetch a good amount every time I've seen it up sale. I think my favorite cover of this batch is the Suspense. Something about the creature's expression and its bone white arms. Creepy. Let us know how the story "Two Hands" is won't you?
  20. Tell me about it! It was at $600 for awhile and I thought I'd have a shot at it. Oh well, the hunt goes on! $2,225.. must of been the white pages which gave it the premium.
  21. Great books everyone! That box of ECs is sure a sight to behold! I think Graham Ingels might be my favorite comic artist...at least definitely in the top 3. Matthew, you sure are on a buying spree or are these books just oldies from your crypt? I still haven't gotten a Horror Of The Tomb yet. Looks like a good read! Thanks for posting.
  22. Great looking book and even greater story Matt! Congrats!!
