It's interesting that his Hulk 1 had restoration. I can't remember the details but apparently when Nic decided to sell his collection, his books were sent in to CGC via a large dealer/auction house, I think Metro but not sure. Nic had purchased many of his books from the same auction house. As it turned out, a lot of his books came back restored and Nic was very angry. There was a lot of speculation and it was suggested that is the reason Nic decided to quit comics and sell. He was disgusted. While it sounds a little far fetched, if true, I can understand and sympathize with his reaction.

This is a fun thread. The ASM #14 is my biggest and my favorite purchase of the Year. In hand. the colors really pop. Purchased from Greg Reece. The Tec #359 was sold to help fund the purchase of the ASM #14. I missed it terribly and was able to eventually get it back so I am going to count it as a new, favorite purchase. The Wonder Woman #54, in this kind of condition, is rarely found. At 8.0, it is second highest graded. Again, a book that really pops in hand.

I no longer have collecting 'goals', I just let the books come to me. I try to focus on early Silver Age. Prices on anything Marvel is crazy high so I will probably get more DC this year. I stopped buying current Moderns altogether. It's just no longer fun. I don't believe all these variants will be worth anything years from now.

I'm stunned. I thought you were in it for life. Not too many of us DC collectors amongst all the Marvel Junkies.

To tape or not to tape
Bomber-Bob replied to comicquant's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I like to use an oversized 1 mil mylite Bag(soft) and Board, flap taped at the bottom, and then slide this combo into the 4mil mylar. Just putting a book into a 4mil Mylar can be dangerous. It's really irritating to damage a book while inspecting/scanning for submission. Back in the day when I was submitting in quantity, after a couple accidents, I stopped the inspection/scanning altogether. I'd rather get a disappointing grade than to have an accident. Clipping a corner, incurring a tear, dinging a corner, fingerprints, etc. and all this before even being shipped. Scary. -
At this point, should I just crack them out of the case?
Bomber-Bob replied to NoMan's topic in Comics General
Not too long ago, a thread like this would have received an onslaught of backlash, driving the author to run and hide. Good to see things remained mostly cordial. I think the pressing ship has sailed and it's not worth the effort of the pressing crowd to even acknowledge. I prefer unpressed books for my collection but they are not easy to acquire anymore. I will buy pressed books as long as they look good. As Roy mentioned, a properly pressed book should not look pressed. While I expect most books in newer slabs to be pressed, it is dicsoncerting to hear many dealers press ALL their raw books. This should be disclosed. Greg Reece is one of the few online dealers that will note if a book was pressed. I think it would behoove other dealers to consider disclosing. Dealers should consider the value in originality as oppossed to a slightly higher grade. I will pay more for an unpressed raw VF, than a pressed VF+ . I don't think I am alone. Am I ? -
General Question about Grading?
Bomber-Bob replied to silentassassin's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
That is not common grading speak. I suspect it's some code, specific to this seller. -
To tape or not to tape
Bomber-Bob replied to comicquant's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Therein lies the real problem. From experience, the book will forever pain you to even look at it. I would just sell it, as is, with the chip. Let the new owner decide what to do. -
Vintage Silver Age for Spawn ? You should have no trouble finding a taker for that !

My experience with Fedex shipping my books
Bomber-Bob replied to Ride the Tiger's topic in Comics General
Actually, I live in the Chicago area, western suburbs. In my experience, and trust me I get a lot of deliveries, Fedex has always been reliable. UPS is terrible and the USPS hit or miss. Please note I'm not questioning your experience, just saying. Now, I always use Fedex Ground, same delivery guy, same timeframe for delivery. The other options, Home Delivery, Express, whatever they are have not been as reliable as Ground. -

If you look up the Tracking number, I think it's something called More Detail, it should say whether a signature is required. -
Please solve this BLACK CAT MYSTERY (#50)!
Bomber-Bob replied to Point Five's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
If there is such a thing as CGC standards, it is my understanding that the highest grade a book with a completely detached centerfold can get is 7.0. The highest grade with a 3" tear is 4.0 . Again, this is my understanding. Of course, these two 'rules' mean nothing when applied against an already low grade book. I'm not really good at grading low end books but a 2.0 seems reasonable. -
1st Submission Results!
Bomber-Bob replied to Reece Markidis's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Is what a secret, the grading room ? Probably not officially, but I've never seen any pics. I don't think they allow any one inside under the guise of insurance reasons. I've heard of some getting a tour. I think Roy said he has been inside. -
1st Submission Results!
Bomber-Bob replied to Reece Markidis's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Yes, that would be a nice addition to the website. I's actually pretty amazing how much we(CGC customers) accept on good faith. They are not a very transparent company. I hope we don't find out someday that it was all smoke and mirrors. -
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252 BOARD SIZE
Bomber-Bob replied to oldschoolone's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
No, it will be too tight a fit, susceptible to damage. Buy the Silver Age size bag and boards. The little extra wiggle room is better. -
Better hurry. I heard Roy is booking a flight to Sweden as we speak ! LOL, of course.

I wouldn't worry about it 'not being worth the trip'. Have some fun, take a road trip, bring CASH, and hope for the best. You will be more mad at yourself if you let a good deal pass rather than wasting some gas money. I say check it out. Good luck !

1st Submission Results!
Bomber-Bob replied to Reece Markidis's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
It's funny you say that because I remember thinking conspiracy thoughts early on also. I was sure they were picking on me LOL ! Knowing a lot more about the process now, I don't think they pick on Newbies. My conspiracy thoughts now are about them giving the nod to the big submitters. In theory, the graders know nothing about the submission behind the book they are looking at. To me, that's the foundation for the integrity of the whole process. I trust it's true.
