Hi Bradley- thanks for noting, but in the notes it states detached at both staples... was this considered as a downgrade to grade?

If the cover is attached via tape, CGC grades the book as detached. A number of years ago, a cover could be attached with tape and not regarded as detached. The community argued against this approach so CGC changed their policy. I believe it's the correct policy.

Thanks Bob- I am starting to lose a bit of faith in the program here so making me somewhat whole will help...

I wonder what they would have graded with there covers attached....

It does seem odd that this has happened to you twice. I would have hoped that if Receiving had an 'accident' they would have contacted you. I suspect the graders were not notified of any 'accident' and the books were detached when graded. UNfortunately, I don't think they take a picture of the book when received. Call tomorrow and let us know what they advise. Again, good luck !

Ask away. No they were both in appropriate bags and boards. I always go one size above what the bag is labeled. I like an easy in and out with my bags and boards.

Okay, when you contact CGC, mention the fact that you have pictures and you used oversized bags and boards and this has happened twice. I would call tomorrow, they are much better at answering the phone than answering E-Mail. They will probably have you send pictures to them but call first. Good luck. It's possible they can oblige you with some store credit. (shrug) Just something to show good faith.

    Thank You.

Notes on the MMC - say top of cover detached and bottom of cover detached.

Notes on Fury just say cover detached no specifics on either staple

Well, this seems to indicate the whole cover was detached on both. Clearly your pictures look like both staples were attached on the MMS and at least the top staple on the Fury. Wow, this seems to indicate there was some trauma to the books.

    Heat works well...especially dry heat...like, you know...an attic...in Arizona...

This has been discussed before for Vintage books and usually CR/OW precludes a book from getting a 9.8. Not impossible, I've seen a few, but not often. DId you ever see a Modern get a CR/OW, slabbed, and if so what was the grade ?

Thank you for answering. I understand the risks involved, I also trust this presser very much- he has advised me on books not to press before and done some amazing work on some fragile books. I do also use CCS to press some stuff depending on what I am looking to get done.

I do not have a pic of the GA in the case ( I could dig it out tommorrow and take) but I am sure I have before and after on pressing in my phone i can share as well as pics of the SA raw as it has not returned yet. Give me a moment and I will find the pictures.

BTW, you originally asked if this has happened to others. Yes, it has happened but not often.  I've only seen it mentioned on the Boards a couple times. Please recognize this sucks and I do feel bad for you. I'm just not sure they will offer any kind of compensation. I do think you should at least bring it up to them.

The 1st book was pressed by a well known presser not CGC and sent back to me then I submitted. I reviewed the book after the pressing. That was a couple months ago. Golden Age grader Notes and Label say detached.

The 2nd book which I just got the grades back was not pressed, I submitted the book. I even went back to the conversation when buying the book to double check the conversation and review the pics, I specifically asked if it was attached then and reviewed the book when it arrived packed it up and sent in to CGC myself with about a dozen other books. This was a Silver Age book. It is in the grader notes but I do not have the book in hand yet to see the label .

Anytime I have something pressed other then at CCS I have it sent back to me and submit myself.

Thanks for the reply. First a side comment, depending on the condition, it is not always prudent to press an older GA book. The safest thing to do is to send it to CCS for a review. They will decide if 1) the book is safe to press and 2) whether the press will improve the grade. If you submit it for a review and the cover winds up detached, you do have recourse.  Now getting back to your situation, in both cases the detachment is mentioned in the notes. This indicates they received the book with the cover detached. This is obviously a 'gray area', it can't be verified where the detachment happened. I certainly agree you should bring this up with them but it may be difficult for them to accept the blame. I would be very interesting in seeing a pic of both books.

I tried to search around for this topic but did not find a thread. I just got the grades back on a book and this the 2nd or third time I have sent a book in with the cover attached yet when it comes back graded it is now detached. Obviously these were lower grade books.. but fairly pricey books where the grade is significant to the value and obviously the condition is now significantly downgraded. I know they have to handle the book to grade, but I handled both of the last 2 books this happened to (even had one pressed) and the covers stayed on. Has this happened to others? Do I have any recourse? Should they at least have notified me if this happened during handling?

    Thanks

    Jay

I think you need to give a little more background. Who pressed the book, CGC or someone else ? Who sent the book to CGC, you or the presser ? Do the grader's notes say the cover is detached ? These details may shed a light as to what happened.

Jaydogrules repeats his fiction because he has heavily invested in these "ratio variants", especially books like ASM #667 1:100, and needs people to believe that those numbers are tied to sales numbers reported by Diamond, because he wants everyone to think these books are scarcer than they might actually be.

I agree, it sure seems like Jaydog usually has an agenda.

possibly. But I must ask why bother? The book doesn't look to be in high grade so why spend significant dollars on a book to have it restored? Makes no financial sense.

    Assuming the book is a VG ( 4.0 ), a CGC 4.0 sells for around $325.

Spending money to remove the ink will cost more than that and you will end up with a restored label. The book is covered in creases, dents, wear and color loss and that is just in the section you have shown.

I agree, there is no benefit to get this book restored.

I have a chance at 2 comics I'm looking at,now these prices are canadian, take in mind 500 for thanks 13 and 200 for spawn 1 both cgc 9.8.

Any opinion before my girlfriend throttles me?

I really think it is time that you start doing your own research. Continually asking us to evaluate prices for you is not our job.  Besides looking at Sold prices on E-Bay, there are a number of services available to price books for a nominal fee.

CGC performs a valuable service. However, because of subjectivity, random chance, and human error, it is not perfect. If this book is extremely important to you, then sure, go for a redo. Otherwise, my advice is to move on.

At some point you’ll get a better grade than you expected. And the universe will balance out a bit.  :)

I agreee with you, however, if a book is graded 9.2 with a bend referenced in the notes, it is pretty obious this was NOT a grading error. Submitting, as is, for a 'redo' will not accomplish anything. See my comments below, I can clearly see the bend. This book would need to be pressed again and regraded. IMO, it's not worth the expense. (shrug)

I just got back a NTT2 that I thought was a good 9.6 or on a good day 9.8 candidate. It was pressed. I was surprised to get back a 9.2 and especially confused on the only grader notes - "bend left bottom of back corner". There is nothing visible to notate a bend of any kind. Under microscope or tilting with direct light to look for shadows there is nothing there. I contacted CGC and was told to resubmit for review/reholder. My question though has anyone had any luck going down this path? See pics below of the area grader said there was a "bend"

I think I see the bend and it looks pretty obvious to me. The notes say, and I concur, it is on the BC LEFT. You are showing us a closeup of the Back Cover spine area on the right. It may have been a poor job of pressing or it got damaged in shipping.  Before you send it back to CGC, you need to get it properly pressed. Just remember, if you send it back to CGC there will be no freebies. You will be charged for a regrade. I have no idea about the valuation on this book but it doesn't seem worth the expense and effort.

I think that $35 is for all three days (and an hour earlier on Saturday and Sunday). I don't know if you can pay $20 at the door to get in on Friday night.

It looks like you can load in on Saturday morning, too, though. So there could be some dealers who aren't even there on Friday night.

Obviously, it's to get those people in early, getting first crack at the good stuff.

Thanks for the reply. I think you are correct, that the 35.00 is for 3 days which includes Friday. However, can you just show up on Friday and pay 20.00 for the one night is the question. It's disappointing that the website is this ambiguous.  I know the show is still a couple months away so maybe they are still in a planning stage. I hope they come on the Boards and advertise a little.

  15. I just received two Action Comics from Randy's recent sales thread, one slabbed and one raw. Randy did an excellent job of packaging, double boxed Priority mail. I loved the books, very fresh looking for books from the 1950's. Overall, this was a great transaction from a first rate seller. I highly recommend Randy. (thumbsu
