Is anything wrong with the current cases? Cracks or major scuffs? If no then personally I wouldn't worry about reholdering.

I agree, this is excellent advise. I have personally seen grades lowered on a reholder. Sometimes it's a situation where the book gets damaged. Sometimes a press will revert. I think you are crazy to submit a 9.9 for reholder.

I worked for them for 4 years. I was their magazine specialist and finalizer, but at CGC you do whatever you can to help out. I worked in shipping and quality control as well...

The Lion knows his stuff. He's one of the few ex CGC employees that is active on the Boards. He especially likes to help us with the tough questions. You can learn a lot by simply following his posts.

Will the Graders Notes always indicate whether the staples are rusty - or does it depend on the grader?

I have pulled a few set of notes and have seen staple rust indicated - just wondering whether it is always something they note and I can rely on - i.e., I am considering a big purchase, staple rust is a deal breaker for me, the seller says the staple looks discolored a bit but the staple is very hard to see as it is detached from the FC and recessed, so I pulled the notes and no rust is noted ...... so trying to see if I can rely on the notes :)

I think it depends on the severity of the rust on the staples. More often than not, in my experience, it seems to not be referenced on the notes.

I am not posting it in the sales thread because as of right now it’s not for sale. I however would like to know if anyone is interested and what they’d be willing to pay/trade. I thought that was acceptable as I’ve seen it before. If this is in violation then I’ll remove the pics.

Usually these Club threads are meant to show your books and discuss the love. Your reference to the book is not for sale but you would like to know if anyone is interested and what they would pay is an interesting twist. IMO, it's either for sale or it is not. Though I think your copy is very attractive I do think there is way too much chipping on the right edge. This 'flaw' is often frowned upon by collectors. Though CGC was generous with the grade, it just doesn't look like it's 6.0 worthy. But it's not for sale anyway, right .

    Hi everyone,

I am "contemplating" downgrading my copy and if anyone is interested please shoot me a PM.  I have posted a pic of the front and back cover.

I don't think these kind of Sales announcements are appropriate for this thread. It should be listed in a real Sales thread with prices. Sorry but those are Board Rules, not mine.

Calling other members out like this, out of the blue, when they have not interacted with you, is inappropriate. No one is "driven" to argument. If you don't want to argue, don't argue. You're free to comment as much as anyone and everyone else, without someone coming along and "requesting" that you specifically not reply to them.

Singling other members out like this in public is a "WTH...?" move. You're better than this. I hope this is just a symptom of your illness, and I hope you get better soon.

I sent you a PM to keep my medical condition somewhat private. Again, I only asked that you not drive me to argument, which you did anyway. Sorry but I will avoid you in the future.

Why are you calling other members out? If you don't want to argue with someone, the power is entirely in your hands: don't argue. If someone's comments bother you, either ignore them mentally or put them on ignore.

Calling members out like this is completely inappropriate.

I didn't call you out, I just asked that you oblige with my request to not drive me to argument. I also mentioned I am in ill health. I should be able to reply to a discussion without incurring your wrath.

  8. Not too many years ago, grader notes were often completely missing, especially with lower tiers and Moderns. Over the years the strictness of the grading has waxed and waned. Look at the grades on many first generation labels, circa 2000 - 2003, and 9.8's were not often seen. Because of the introduction of pressing, we now see more 9.8's . One problem I have noticed is that sometimes the press will fade and what once was a 9.8 now have visible folds. The really good pressers know how to press and wait to see if the creases return. So, my point here is the submission may initially look good, 9.8 candidate, but if enough time has passed before actually getting graded, maybe not.

RMA, please, as a favor to me, please don't reply to my comment with some analysis trying to show my comments are wrong. I am currently not in the best of health and don't feel like arguing with you. My comment is a personal observation from thousands of submissions. It's not a big deal, it's not a radical statement, it's just a comment. Please.

  9. As far as getting rid of these marks, I'm not sure if this is in an older laber. If so, you can use some thin cardboard or paper to seperate the covers a bit and the 'rainbows' will disapper. SHow us a pic of the label. The new labels are tougher to work with. In any case, this is not really on the comic, just a visual effect.

  10. True story, a couple years ago a comic dealer friend of mine bought a raw Golden Age comic collection. I helped him rebag and Board the comics. It turns out many of the books had mold. We both got sick within a day or two. It was terrible, almost scary, burning noses, etc.  I had some kind of giant rash on half of my face. I don't think people realize how dangerous live mold is. You should not be around it. My advice is don't mess with trying to remove it. Get rid of the book. Sorry.

Whatever it is, it looks nasty. Is the staple defect what appears to be rust migration? This and the stain you show in the first picture lead me to think this book was exposed to moisture at some point. And yes, for me it would affect the grade...

I agree, these are nasty looking stains that will greatly affect the grade. IMO, if there is even a chance this is mold, get rid of this book.

    I’m looking for Nov 9, 1968.

I have only found (and bought on the boards) 1 book dated Nov 9 but it’s from 1964.

I am open to any books dated Nov 9

I have found that the Date Stamps are usually the day of the week that the comic was either delivered or put out for sale. In your case, Nov 9, 1968 is a Saturday. I don't think you will find a book dated on Saturday unless the owner stamped it.

    Are these worth getting graded? fantastic four #78 12c/captain marvel #1 1979/captain marvel #1 1968/new mutants annual#2/uncanny xmen #130/uncanny xmen #126/special edition xmen #1/xmen #41,23,32 12c/mighty thor #128 12c/new teen titans #30

As with most situations, the decision to submit for grading depends on the estimated grades of the individual books. You are not giving us much to work on, like pics, so it is difficult to answer you.

I think the rippling and bends might be able to get flattened out however a press on a chipped book is asking for trouble. My 2 cents - send to CCS if you're unsure for a pre-screen. They'll determine if you can get a grade bump and will crack, press and have the book submitted for you.

+1 Good suggestion. Just to clarify, don't deslab the book before shipping. Generally, this is a dangerous thing to do. Send it, in the slab, to CCS for a pre-screen. You will get off much cheaper if the answer is no.

  15. Joe, I would advise you study your grader notes on these books carefully. If you see something that a press or cleaning will eliminate or improve, then it's worth a try. If all of the flaws sound like they cannot be removed, then I would not waste money.  Looking at the FF1 notes, the stains, tears , chipping, etc. cannot be improved. In fact, with a book with this many chips, it's possible to make the situation worse. Tears can get bigger, chips can be pulled, etc.

I have a similar question to this.

I just got a book and found on one page, the top portion of the page came loose from the staple. The bottom of the page is still attached to the bottom staple.

I'm just wondering how much this will affect the overall grade/condition of the book.

    Thanks!

I don't think your question can be answered without seeing the book. It depends on the overall grade of the book, ignoring the staple problem. The higher the grade, the higher the effect on the grade. A 9.6 may become a 9.0 but a 5.0 may have little to no affect. If you bought this book raw, I would not be happy.

    Hey guys,

I was looking at pictures on ebay trying to get a feel for how a book I own would be graded.  Then I saw this on a CGC 9.2 book.  This kind of corner web/crease is allowed on an otherwise nice book for a 9.2?

Personally, I would not want to own a book graded 9.2 with an obvious corner crease. During some eras of CGC grading, a book with a corner crease like this would have received an 8.5.

It has it's place.  I am amazed at some of the mid-grade, non-key, quite common silver and bronze age stuff people send in and waste money on slabbing.  Does a Fantastic Four #98 in 5.0 really need to be debated it's a mid grade book?

I agree with you but it seems like new collectors are now perfectly fine with owning and submitting lower grades. I'm sure CGC is fine with this = more submissions. Part of the problem is high grade has gotten so expensive. The lower grades have attracted more collectors. As long as the lower grade present well, why not submit them, collect them. Golden Age is currently in that category.
