Another disappointing reading experience was Harvey horror comics. Some admittedly nice artwork from Lee Elias, with his Caniff-influenced style, and Howard Nostrand doing an excellent Jack Davis imitation, or swipe. Gory covers, disguising much tamer interior material, and like ACG a complete bore most of the time.

Lagertha would've been a much better choice.

I remember reading some ACG titles a couple of years ago; generally terrible stories and art, having to trudge through reams of complete dross to find a short interlude with some decent illustration.

What are those? Chamber of Darkness 4, Starr the Slayer by Thomas and Smith

Very true with many of Jack Davis’ horror stories, where at times there’s obvious ‘completion backward’ ; a certain gory ending imagined first, and then a 6-page scenario leading up to that.

Action 1 and Detective 27 are anthologies with a lot of crappy, unreadable, coma-inducing filler material and a few pages of significance, otherwise incredibly boring. No wonder so many copies were binned, back then.

I can’t stand Basil Wolverton’s artwork, especially those ugly covers he seemed to specialise in.

Good taste. That was the first 1 to 100 run I put together in the late 70s, when I started collecting seriously. The early issues weren't easy for me to get hold of at that time, up in the north of England.

Savage Tales 1 for its relative scarcity. Savage Tales 2 and 3 for the classic BWS 'Red Nails' story.

I believe it was to bring it in line with the rest of Europe. Not joking or being political.

I felt that his solo work was very different tonally, readable enough at times, occasionally far too wordy, as with the Avengers Annual, but not at the level of his collaborations with Byrne. And, far better than his late 90s X-Men material, which I found to be practically unreadable.

Byrne left, and Claremont's ADD had the run of the place. I do not think that most people realize the amount of influence to the story that Byrne actually contributed. whatever the case, I agree that everything after byrne stunk terribly. Most overrated series of all time. I find Claremont's work without Byrne to be quite cold and soulless. Also, overly verbose. I recently re-read Avengers Annual 10, which was quite ridiculous in this respect. Michael Golden did some great, detailed art in this book, but the panels often look almost miniaturised because of the writer's word density, and best magnified on a tablet to appreciate them properly.

That would be impressive, but the standard 1080p version is itself superb on mid-size TVs.

Those oversized Famous First Editions get everywhere.

Sad that I had to pass on a discounted, signed, limited edition copy of the IDW Xenozoic Tales / Mark Schultz Artist Edition at the last London con. Too big and difficult to lug home north by train.

The money would have to be very stupid before I part with mine. Yup. It has some fantastic Neal Adams artwork. Very nice book.
