  1. Great story.  After reading how the books were all in pristine condition, my jaw dropped when I got to the part where you started identifying them, including Cap 74!  But then I got to the punchline about the covers missing.  Darn!!  But then again, it's probably a good thing because if the covers had been on them, they would likely be residing in the collections of Fischler, Sartre or Bedrock.  In any event, the ones you posted are beautiful!  :applause:

Bought several raws on HA, had this one slabbed myself.  Curiously out of 4 recent pedigrees I submitted - while all came back as pedigree - only one had the gold color label.  For example this one below is clearly Promise, yet no gold label?  One of 4 I could see as a mistake - 3 of 4 not sure what's going on?  No more gold labeling?

Strange, seems like an issue you should raise in the "Ask CGC" thread.

The current ROI snapshot does not look promising for the collection.

While time will provide more data, and investment realization may change, the spreadsheet below paints an overall picture of the irrational exuberance that drove Promise prices higher than they fundamentally justified. (Source: Heritage Auctions. Data sorted by oldest to newest purchase date)

Wow, out of 43 books, 33 went down and, in some cases, dropped massively.  If the sales commissions are taken into account, 37 of 43 went down and the devastation is far worse.

    Guaranteed to be unpopular take:

Fantastic Comics #3, hate it.  The musculature looks messed up, the pose is completely wrong for someone swinging a heavy morning star, there would be way more tension.  His left hand seems to be gently caressing the robot, with the left bicep bulging for some reason, all while he's about to hit himself in the back of his own head with that morning star.

Amen brother, that is not one of Lou Fine's best depictions of a human body.  And it is indeed an unpopular opinion based on the mystic cultivated by that book.

  5. Although I have some of the books discussed in this thread, I don't agree with the hype over a "first appearance" in an ad.  While it's an interesting anecdote from a historical standpoint, I don't think it should have a significant impact on the value of a book, and it certainly shouldn't make a book more valuable than the book in which the character formally debuts.

I recognize, of course, that my opinion is contradicted by the prices we are now seeing on some of these books with "first appearance" ads.  It will be interesting to see if these prices hold up over time in our CGC cover-centric world.

They were in the ballpark.  I did find it a little surprising that raw graded GVG (not third party verified) copies on Heritage sold for slightly higher than my Graded ( verified) copies.  Surprised also because they are certified universal, so thought that would give more reassurance to buyers.  Very glad that the Larson lead the pack in the end (it should) and thought #4 was very high in demand (more so than #7 it seemed).

    What did you think?

I thought they did fine, but they're so rarely offered for sale that I didn't know what to expect.  I was a bit surprised that the 7 didn't do a bit better since it's one of the few Gerber 10 books out there.

I'm noticing more and more books with rusty staples. I'm wondering whether books that were pressed 12 or 13 years ago now have rusty staples because of the humidity that the books were exposed to during the pressing process. The humidity could be a catalyst for the rust to start. It could also just be because the books are getting older and time is taking its toll.

That's an interesting theory that I hadn't heard before, but which seems plausible.  Someone should do a study.

The goal is to have one from each, but I know it is very unlikely I will ever have a Larson or Allentown book to name a few.  Some of those are simply WAY out of my class.

You should be able to pick up a Larson that is within your means.  Although it is a very strong pedigree overall, it includes lower grade copies of low demand books.
