  1. Looking at the dates on the books in the Gerber guide, it doesn't appear that Weird Comics was on the stands any earlier than any other Fox books. However, what I might speculate is that as Weird was a new title at that time that Fox may have had the cover already drawn up by Fine in order to ensure that the second issue made it to the stands. Given Fox's legendary cheapness that may be a bit much to speculate, but I'm quite certain that Weird 2 is Lou Fine. (as another comparison, look at Mystery Men 9 with the alien skeleton's showing through their skin, a la the woman on Weird 2)
  2. Interesting. Have you looked into whether or not Fine really drew the cover for Fantastic #4 also? That one never looked like Fine to me.
  3. It may not be Fine, but that can't be Simon. It's too rigid in form and tight in execution. I've never seen anything like that from Simon. The villain's robe, the girl's skeleton, the bad guy in the background, the translucent structure on the right - all scream Fine to me. Or at least one of his (many) mimics. Compare the bolts around the orb to the bolts around Dynamo's hand on Science 2 (Fine) vs. the gun on Science 4 (Simon).
  4. Oh, and RHG... Those are the 5 stages of grief in graemlin form. I think the acceptance step would be much easier if I could accept your offer to sell me that book.
  5. I can send you a scan, I'll have to dig it out and scan it out of the mylar. The artist was Lou Fine.
  6. Wonderful books, all of them. I was really hoping to get the Mystery Men 3 in the last Clink auction - 7.5 with white pages. It went for below guide, but I didn't have the funds to get it (I think I was the underbidder). I'm not sure if I posted this one, but I'm deliberating sending this to Matt N to press out the spine roll and to fix the bottom staple. If not for those two defects the book is gorgeous! My reasoning is that the spine roll isn't getting any better, and is probably putting tension on the top staple. I'd appreciate thoughts on this.
  7. Well, they are frenchmen. They look more like Russian anarchists to me I don't know, the VanDyke on the left and red beret on the right just screams "oui-oui, oh-hoh-hoh" to me. Besides, who would want to hurt an anarchist... they're so cute.
  8. What about PAM? Or is that used for the undergrounds? Or Playboys? People used to use Pam to regloss books. No joke.
  9. I use "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" and then laminate them. I always respected Fabio's opinion on preservation.
  10. Yup. That exact scene is in the last story.
  11. I've bought maybe a dozen books from them. Grading is usually very acceptable.
  12. Yeah, Wonder 15 has long been considered to be "up there" at the top of the Schomburg airbrush covers. Not my particular cup of tea, but it can go pretty steep at times. Seems like a pretty good price.
  13. I've been reading a reprint of this to my son lately. He loves it. That's a killer 6.5.
  14. That's the second copy Weist has auctioned this year. Prior to about 18 months ago I wasn't sure it existed. Now 3 in one year.
  15. Thanks! The lumber business is risky. Damn near broke a leg today. I might get hemorrhoids from sitting...
  16. Man... I need to get into the lumber business! Nicely done!
  17. Here's one you don't see very often. In fact, I can't recall the last time I saw one for sale.
  18. Best Comics from 1939 preceded it. I forget the character's name. The Red Mask, I think.
  19. It could be the same one. I don't recall the marriage of the two covers - but my memory of it is pretty vague. Check with Dave first, I think it was his. Still a cool book! Congrats!
