If I recall correctly, Parrino paid $350K for it and then sold it for around $220K.
A lot of people gave Borock a hard time about giving a book with so much writing on it a 9.0, I wonder how those same people feel now seeing it in a 9.2 holder?

Was he (Snake Eyes) popular at the time issue#1 came out?
I watched that episode of "Toys that Made Us" and one of the most interesting parts was when they talked about how they just threw him in last minute because having a figure that required little/no painting would allow them bandwidth to do better paint jobs on the rest of the action figure line. The last thing they expected was for him to become their most popular character.
Snake Eyes was a nobody, they all were! But I believe Snake Eyes was the only major Joe left off the cover.

What was also mystifying from a collecting perspective, #2 was touted as having “lower distribution” and was priced higher than #1 for decades! That isn’t the case anymore, but what I do find interesting is that Snake Eyes isn’t on the cover of #1. Why is that? My only answer is that he does not fit into the soldier, army profile type. He’s a ninja. Someone at the top made the decision to leave him off the cover and that’s the only reason I can think of.

Well, let’s face it, millions of children grew up on GI Joe. It’s no surprise one of the top key issues would sell at a price higher than most would expect. GI Joe is still relevant, with toys still being made and comics being produced. Transformers is another 80’s phenomenon that is even more successful!
I think we can all agree the buy was a nostalgic purchase, not a buy based on it being one of the best covers artistically rendered in the 80’s. It’s an average cover. There are at least 15 other GI Joe covers I personally feel are better than #21, objectively putting nostalgia aside.
Some collectors could care less about GI Joe #21 (as already stated) and others place it above all else! That’s what makes art and this hobby great! What mystifies one collector is a no-brainer to another.

Not sure if I am remembering this correctly or not, but didn't Bechara already benefited from it decades ago by having it successfully unrestored?
Possibly. I had a lengthy discussion with John Verzyl back in the 90’s about the Superman #1 Mile High? Why? Because John had made a deal with Redbeard to buy every Mile High he owned, including the Superman #1. John didn’t want the book. It was not high grade (by Mile High standards) and was getting very expensive for the times. John was happy when Bechara bought it.
I was told there was something done to the book, perhaps the centerfold. This discussion was 30 years ago so I cannot recall all the details. Perhaps a tear was sealed and was unsealed at some point.
Either way the deals have been done and everyone’s making $. Like Superman, it’s the American way!

Just checked. As hypothesized, Swamp Thing on both. That’s most likely the difference for the price gap.
One of mine has Swamp Thing on it in 2 panels. The other one is the origin page where he’s being dragged into the swamp. I’m guessing those comicconnect pages are now worth 150k each.

I saw a similar page recently change hands in Seattle for mid $30k. Another was offered at $60k but the buyer passed at that price. Hopefully that helps ballpark.
I would have thought more. Comic connect sold 2 pages 4 years ago from HOS 92 for $72,222 and $66,500… and 4 years ago in the OA market is a lifetime ago on sales prices. Happy I have them either way!

I’d definitely just give them to someone, but I wouldn’t feel great about it. Most of them are gnarly. Discolored and dingy. A lot of them have to be at least 20 years old.
Sounds perfect for most comic shops I’ve been to!

HOS 92 is a beauty but I don’t see 3m on it. Maybe I’m wrong but as of right now I’d take the under.
I own 2 consecutive pages from HOS 92. I wonder what they are worth these days? The 1st page is also the origin page!

According to GCD, the PWJ #3 cover was Potts layouts and inks and Lee pencils. The signature Potts Lee Potts seems to support this.
I know it’s Potts pencils and Jim Lee inks. But the PWJ sold for 177k, so if you want Punisher with Jim Lee attached to it you could have bought this and saved $154,000.
I was expecting the cover to sell in the $40k area, so $23k seemed like a $17k discount to me.

I remember when the Voldemort Magic Woo Suspense 3 sold for $100K right after Voldemort started slabbing books. I couldn't help but wonder whether that $100K came out of Voldemort's marketing budget.
Is there anything you guys won’t say, make up or exaggerate about when it comes to the competition? It’s not the competition that looks bad, it’s you!

Man, he was consistent. Almost machine-like. You gotta love that. No surprises.
If you keep changing graders, you keep changing consistency. It can’t be helped.
That is Dave C. When I was there he was a very good, solid grader, one of the best. To my knowledge he still works there. @lionsden can confirm.

Don't think so until its officially recognised that 180 is his first full appearance.
Sorry but 1 panel does not constitute a “full appearance” in a comic. 1st appearance yes, full appearance no!

"first page appearance of the black costume"
Not even close. It's only the first page with Spidey wearing the full black costume in the issue in which it's finally explained how he got it but which came out after he got rid of it in ASM 258.
And, yes, that price is nuts.
This page doesn’t even explain how he got the black costume, it’s the page before this one that shows the origin of how Spider-Man got it.
This book came out 7 months after the black costumes 1st appearance in May.

Can I just say that it's nuts that a GI Joe cover by anyone, let alone Ed Hannigan, is worth more than one of the most iconic Jim Lee X-Men covers?
Can I interject that this was the prime era for GI Joe. I would say in 1984 GI Joe was more popular than any other comic characters, Including Spider-Man, X-men, Batman and Superman! Gi Joe had tons of toys, a movie, daily cartoons and lots of other GI Joe related items. There is a ton of nostalgia there. In fact, GI Joe is still so popular the toys are currently in Target, Walmart, TJ Max etc.
