  1. yeah, kid books are brutal. Newsboy Legion anyone?
  2. To me its a pretty boring action versus a spectacular timely cover.. Young allies isn't typically my bag either but kid title notwithstanding I will take a gorgeous cover timely #1 all day against a run of the mill action. I'm not typically a cover whore but I also typically prefer timely contents over dc contents too so I'd take the timely all around.
  3. This is pretty much a pick-em since the books are so similar in so many ways, but I'd take 28 I guess.
  4. I'd take 14 also. Don't have to think twice.
  5. Or, it would buy you 16 unopened copies of an 80's Nintendo game There aren't 16 unopened copies to be had, at least at this point, so your suggestion is impossible
  6. Let's put it in an even more tangible way. You could buy an action 1 for that money.
  7. PS - showcase/steve - I may not agree with your take on suspense 3, but kudos on starting a really great thread. It's consistently been a lot of fun
  8. Exactly. Now we'd better move on to another two books
  9. I'd forgotten I started that thread! That's priceless!!
  10. Oh yeah, he passed away forgot about that Would love to see scans if you have them!
  11. I don't suppose you have scans of any of the covers or art to those issues? How much were the offers for, btw? Sounds like he still owns them? Good to hear. He was really an amazing talent and I daresay one of the top artists to ever come out of comic books. Schomburg too - I remember when I first learned about the airbrush covers I was just blown away that this guy was able to do two completely different styles so well. Sure I've been bagging on his Suspense 3 a lot but I think a counterpoint grounded in reality is well overdue when it comes to this book. IMO its gotten to its inflated price level on rarity and brainwashing and not much else.
  12. oh yeah, that was soooooooooo witty. Wow, what a lightning bolt of comic genius that line was.
  13. Oh no doubt. I think that's something most people don't get. Steranko, Schomburg, Cole, ect could all draw "realistically" when they wanted to, they just took artistic liberties a lot of the time to enhance the cover's effect. It always rankles me when someone bags on Steranko because they think he couldn't draw proper anatomy. Please. Amen to that. In fact, if memory serves cole illustrated several wildlife books in a purely realistic vein (and did a *damn* fine job of it from what I recall).
  14. fair enough, and good comments re the perspective/technical aspects. I think that was on purpose on his part though in order to make the covers exciting / stand out. Sorta like kirby did, I guess. (Liefield on the other hand... ) Based on his airbrush covers alone I have no doubt that technical acumen is not something he was lacking.
  15. Sure its in question. We're on the third page of it being in question. Some agree, some don't.
  16. what is there not to like? Not his best composition. Not his best line work. Not his best anything As for the fact that the book has a jungle, a girl, and kkk hooded nazis on the front, if those elements are worth 50k to you then I will draw you up a cover with those elements and charge you 50k.
  17. Bronty, you seem to have a lot of hostility towards the success and popularity of this book. Why are you so angry? ...did Suspense 3 beat you up and steal your lunch money when you were a little kid? Steve, Give me a break and don't try to psychoanalyze I'm not "angry" towards the book. What I am is disappointed that people can't evaluate the book on its merits. I'm just calling a spade a spade. This cover, this book, doesn't deserve its lofty status for any reason other than what I've mentioned. Make this the cover to a random Startling or Exciting comics and you've got nuttin'. Like Jive Turkey mentioned, this book was on very few radars in the 80s. Then after all the press in the early 90s everyone had to have it. But then maybe you haven't been collecting long enough to know?
  18. One more suspense 3 comment. If it was never in the photo journal, or had just a standard small space in the PJ, the crippen copy would be lucky to pull 10k. Believe it.
  19. thanks for agreeing with me, even if it was only between the lines
  20. That's why I added the phrase ( IMO ) I was speaking for myself. I'm sure some others would prefer Schomburg war covers....I like this one the best.....(and based on the $47,000 sales price of this book, I am confident I am not alone ) I don't need you to state "IMO" for me to be able to infer that's its your opinion. That's obvious. Just like its my opinion that without the perfect storm of extreme rarity, being produced without staples, being part of a title that has classic lb cole covers, and being prominently featured in the photo journal, this cover is one big SPOON as far as schomburgs go. Perception would change in a hurry if you took away all the things that go with the book and people just focussed on the book itself
