  1. I've tried that but with very lacklustre results. Maybe I'm not buying the right kind of bulb?
  2. I was thinking the same thing. What a loss that basically none of his art was saved. Can you imagine how good his four color covers would have looked? Or how good the cover to US1 would look?
  3. Let us know. I'm no expert either but the variation in color tones near spine and just the look of the book makes me think more was done... but as I say I know jack about it. But I'd be curious to find out what the final result is. Gorgeous book whatever the case is
  4. I dunno, maybe I get crucified for this, but I see that more as a racial stereotype than as pure racism. I think of racism as hating/judging someone just based on their skin color. Here, the black people on the cover are definitely drawn in a way that evokes a racial/tribal stereotype, but is it racist? Does it evoke hate or bigotry? It certainly doesn't foster understanding, but for all we know the white guy had it coming. I think its more of a slapstick type attempt at comedy with the people and animals of Africa being the danger element chasing after the poor white sap. Not much different than a slapstick cover with another danger element such as a gator biting a guy's leg or something. To me it looks more racist in today's context than it was necessarily trying to be. Ignorant, maybe, racist no? Another example might be shock suspenstories 6. Is that a racist cover? I don't think so. It renders racist people but I think it shows the KKK as the antagonists, and therefore is anything but racist
  5. That makes sense. If I were him I would have made my intentional error something like naming the wrong artist for howard the duck #17 as opposed to a high profile GA book. A DA #1 intentional error would damage his credibility, not so a lesser book.
  6. Yep, both are total nightmares. I'm struck by the urge to simply post more scans. That book is really a stunner in-hand. I think it looks like O'Mealia, especially when you look at the Natives' faces. The dude being burned at the stake looks more like Flessel though. Good job re Flanigan. To my eye, all of these covers where we were unclear if they were Flessel or O'Mealia look to be by the same hand. Not every day a great GA cover artist is uncovered!
  7. re ashcans I believe that's correct, and I don't believe that they were ever released to the public until such time as they came out of the publisher's files, etc. I think moondog was saying that most of the dc ones came from sol harrison (but I have no first hand knowledge and might be wrong about that). But again, the idea that DA1 is an ashcan is a big leap of faith in my opinion. Why would you have an ashcan #1 and then a regular #2? That doesn't happen. Think about every other DC ashcan #1. There's an ashcan #1, and then the first regular issue is also titled #1 because its #1 to the public. So personally I would think DA#1, if it does indeed exist, is a regular comic NOT an ashcan..
  8. Your post also takes for granted that its an ashcan which is a question in everyone's mind. Is it an ashcan or was it a regular book? Could you ask Bob that also? thanks
  9. I just remember getting chewed out by him for getting him a combo meal from Whataburger instead of just a hamburger (Lunch run-Dallas Fantasy Fair--mid 80s--we were set up next to him). I think I blew his meal budget for the whole convention by adding the fries and coke. Jesus... what a miserable bastich
  10. RHG, when did you pick up all these church copies you've posting lately? Unless you were picking them up in the 70s and 80s I shudder to think what they cost but my word are they gorgeous
  11. Eh. I've heard that argument but disagree completely. Doesn't have the same magic is you ask me. Some of the other covers on this thread though are jawdropping... I loooove that Dynamic 20 of yours
  12. Congratulations Allan Any particular use for the dough; buying something else? cheers
  13. One of my favorite titles as well. Can't wait to see the scans! Doug - are there prehero PC strange tales too?
  14. I'm not an expert - I'll let eccomic comment further but in general I believe the canadian versions of US books like the cap above are in color whereas the canadian "whites" (which conversely are original content books with no US counterparts) are usually B&W inside.
  15. Never seen or heard of those before either- awesome!
