Agreed...... that's absolutely ridiculous. I bought a copy for $250 on ebay last year (it was on a long weekend so I guess not many people were watching the auction). I flipped it for $500, and the person that bought it from me also tried to flip it (I think unsuccessfully) with a reserve around $750. $1500 is too enthusiastic IMO.
Still, you have a damn nice book there Just overpriced in the guide though.
Anyway... to answer your question... I can't see cgc ever grading that as the gold edition, unfortunately, because they can't verify the signature (they've said all along that they won't verify signatures unless as part of the signature series, which would obviously be impossible in this case without a time machine), and as you said, there are really no other characteristics to distinguish it from a regular #1 - so it's effectively impossible for them to verify that it is a gold variant and still adhere to their own policies.
