My results of a large CGC/CCS submission
entalmighty1 replied to buttock's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Let's not get carried away. You're asking for a helluva lot here. You want him to take his blindfold off just for you? You should go home, sit down, and think about what you just did. We're ashamed of you. -
I hope you're right Roy. I don't think the key heavy market is good for sustainability in the long run. I'm not suggesting the BIG CRASH OF 20** is coming, it's more that I see the high prices putting people on the sidelines.

ComicLink/Connect/Heritage threads - where do they belong?
entalmighty1 replied to Heronext's topic in Comics General
This x 11ty billion. You see a thread with dozens of pages and hundreds of replies, with zero hurt feelings, no hackles up, and everybody enjoying themselves discussing books they think are cool. What's wrong with just minding your business and moving on? -
Well, that could be a problem. I'm just saying, the hobby doesn't HAVE to revolve around competing with people for the same stuff. I had designs on doing the Planet run, well before it became the hottest GA title on the market, and made pretty significant progress over the course of a couple of years. I saw the writing on the wall a few months back, and decided my money (and frustration) could be spent more efficiently in other areas. Doesn't mean I don't still love those books, and eventually I may return to it, but I have no interest in seeing who's wallet is bigger (mostly because I know I'll lose). Competition doesn't have to be the death of the hobby for you, just find something cool in another area. I don't think the market is full blown crazy in all areas. Yeah, you're seeing a giant price spike for keys, speculation books, and specific genres in Golden Age books, but you're seeing dips in other areas too. There are about 14 people on the whole planet that collect runs these days. Everyone wants FF 48-50, nobody cares about FF 47. Grab one of those instead.

The hardest lesson to learn for me in this hobby has been staying in my lane. If you find yourself starting to cross swords with people who are better heeled than you, it's time to readjust your focus. I've had many conversations with collectors in regards to paying up for books, and a lot of times, the hammer price is totally irrelevant to them. They're winning the book, whatever the cost. That can be a frustrating auction for people, especially when they don't understand the competition. There is almost always going to be somebody with deeper pockets than you. My collecting focus is underwater covers and pedigrees. When I see a book I'm interested in coming to auction, I reach out to a couple other people I know would possibly be interested, just to see if they're on the book too. If they are, I back away. Sometimes they return the favor. You'd be surprised what people will do for you when you have built a bit of a relationship.

My results of a large CGC/CCS submission
entalmighty1 replied to buttock's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Reminds me of an old web comic I saw years and years ago. Basically the buyer opened a box and there was a bobcat in it that attacked him. He left neutral feedback, but stated "would not buy again." "Comic received in condition as stated, but buyer included a disturbing Polaroid. Would not buy again." -

The disturbing thing is that they probably get away with doing that with most folks. I mean surely that wouldn't be the canned response if it wasn't widely accepted? I can't even imagine getting a submission back with that little communication. They might as well have included a picture of one of the graders rubbing his sack across the cover. -
Having rewatched the majority of Deadwood over the last few weeks, snake oil salesmen are fresh in my mind. "Soap with a prize inside!" Over the last few years, I've seen this creep into the sales forum. It's rampant now. People baiting you with disingenuous, if not outright untrue, titles. People telling you about pressable defects in books, as if that should change the price at all. People telling you about the census, and how the other 3 copies aren't coming to market anytime soon, as if they have inside information. People trying to create frenzy by putting obnoxious prices on a book, then telling you what a good deal it is. I'm hereby retiring from even looking at the sales forums anymore. This is no longer a group of like minded people excited to share this hobby with each other. I've only been around 8 years and I already miss the old days. If I ever run a sales thread again, I'm going to have some very interesting rules.

If I hadn't said something on Instagram, he might not have paid period. I suspect his standing in social media is incredibly important to him, way more important than his reputation here.
-
Yep, I called him out on it. He says he's going to take care of @marmat but I doubt that will ever happen.
-
Yet he's still very active on Instagram, asking about prices for books, etc.
-
I think he's really young if I'm not mistaken. Always seemed like a tire kicker to me than a real buyer. Sorry to hear you're stuck @marmat

After getting rid of the majority of my Planets (which wasn't as easy as I thought it would be), I think my favorite Fiction House is this beauty I got from Cheetah. What a book!
