Moderns that are heating up on ebay!
roastedbagel replied to thirdgreenham's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
I love your market reports when you write them out here. When I go to your website I get kinda confused though. How do you track watchers for auctions? I tap into eBay's API and they tell me how many people are watching an auction. Code monkey here and was intrigued with your site. Is the API publicly available? Also, what did you build your site with? I'm starting to dive into PHP a bit more and am looking for a fun side project, wanted to do something similar to what you do but for my own enjoyment, no competition or anything . -

9.8 is NM/MINT ... I was under the impression 9.9 is mint. Learn something new everyday! Hell in that case I'm buying it for $899! -

I'm going to stop reading this thread until I read 99 but my guess is that Lucille is the name of Daryl's crossbow. Not sure if you're joking or not but I like this theory... -

I enjoy sharing things that put a smile on my face. Such as this graded 9.8 with a description of "NM/MINT". I applaud peoples creativity/ignorance when it comes to eBay titles. -

Wow, that is "low" compared to the last few weeks. Mark this very post though, I guarantee the moment the previews start hitting the airwaves on AMC for season 3, the price of that book will be close to what #1 goes for right now... -

Soooo... How bout them Yankees? On a more related note, as of 15 minutes ago I officially have every issue with the exception of 1,2,and 19. Been needing 49 and 69 forever now, I know, completely random issues but I was waiting for the right price on feebay to arise. Yay me! So who has an #1 they wanna trade me for a psychotic cat or a lovely night out? Edit: I should mention I have almost all variants as well except a few of the harder to find like 94 sketch and #1b. -

We've had strong WD sales in previous months too, including the second highest GPA-tracked price reached for a CGC 9.8 #1 (the $1597 from March 21), and $511 for a raw #1 we graded VF+. So either it's a long-term (and expensive) "marketing technique", or we just have a strong market for WD issues. I think there's a lot of unmet demand out there for WD back issues, and our customer base and mailing list is an ideal channel for reaching that unmet demand. Also, not everybody is as savvy as the people in this thread, or spends as much time watching eBay for the issues they need. And not everybody has the "if it's not 9.8 it's not worthy of my consideration" mindset. Many people are just trying to collect the issues. For a lot of our customers who mostly shop from us and don't spend much time on eBay, all they know is that most of the time we're sold out of all WD back issues, and whenever we do get them in they sell out again very quickly. So when a big run is put out in front of them, it gets competitive. As far as possible shilling: we never bid in our own auctions. There's zero shill activity coming from us. Nor do I see any indication that the consignor is shilling. If you don't want to take my word for it, you're welcome to consign yourself and see what kind of results you get. I appreciate you explaining your side of the story as it takes some kahunas to do so against the people here. I just can't get over though some of the prices these books go for, nor can I imagine these people never look at eBay. Perhaps they feel they are getting a quality item from you and at a higher trust level, but still, some of the prices are truly extraordinary. Issue 10 8.0 selling for $127...It regularly goes for ~$25-35 NM on feeBay. Like you said though, I guess there is a large crowd out there who just simply don't ever go to eBay so they have no idea the other options that are available. I feel bad to be honest. For what its worth, I got my first 7 issues of TWD from your site back in March that you had in stock. I paid about $6 for each issue which were in the 70s and 80s. I have you to blame for what now is a full on addiction and complete run of TWD issues minus a couple I still need. So thanks for that! -
Or one of my 3 10.0s I expect to receive at the end of the month

My #8 was titled as first print on eBay but after checking tonight ive learned it's really a second print, I'm mad but have mixed emotions about messaging the seller. On one end they don't mention it being a second print anywhere on the cover (which I have a hard time supporting), and I myself thought it was a first print. I'm almost certain the seller didn't do it on purpose, but genuinely thought it was first print. I cant fault him for that I suppose. On the other hand I wanna message him and request a partial refund and just see how he responds. Who knows, maybe I get some cash back that will certainly go right back into another book I need. -

Exactly. People getting bent out of shape cause his hair isn't the same is ridiculous. Plus, how do we know perhaps this isn't just a flashback sequence to a younger time for the gov? Probably not, but still, one never knows till it airs -

Why did you have to tell me that? I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear that So would I buy two different types of errors on the same issue? Good question, I haven't come to that point yet. If it was staring me in the face or if I came across it while browsing through a rack, perhaps. I'm not gonna break the bank over it, but if I had the extra cash, I might. I'm not actively seeking them out. I may have come across like the comic book guy which I think to a degree everyone over in the "completed sets" section is in some small way or another, but I was mainly talking about the WD errors out there, which I truly thought were only 3 of. So I didn't see it as a big deal. If there's a book out there that has 500 issues and every 15 issues there's an error, that could spiral out of control rather quick and something I wouldn't be interested. I was just referring to a handful of errors that are easy to find, yes, I would want in my set, not for sales purposes or anything, but just for my own collection. I guess I would feel more "complete" in my mind. Again, that's just me, and I promise, I'm not a 400lb. guy with long hair in a ponytail sitting in a basement. Edit: Spelling -

I dunno, I guess its subjective to how aggressive the completionist is, but I'd be willing to bet a large number of folks intent on having every issue with all documented differences would indeed go after every error/defect issue available. To me, "completionist" is just that, someone who "has everything". I know people will disagree with me and that's fine, I respect everyone's view. Personally though I feel a complete set is all documented and recognized variants, defects, and errors included. May your quest be fruitful my friend. Not sure if being sarcastic or not, but if you're not, thanks. There's not too many errors/misprints in the WD run so it's not a huge mission to be honest. Off the top of my head you have #27, 35, and 75 That's only 3 books to go after. And as I type this, I guess I'm not interested in every error, the one's that piqued my interest were the ones with extra or missing pages. The crease on the back cover of #75 isn't something I would actively seek out. I'm in stitches right now thinking how ironic it is that I'm getting teased for my views on what a "complete set" is while being on a website dedicated to comic book perfection. -

#27 was the first error i think Right so I'm confused on that auction, is the #27 "error" he points out the actual #27 that has a print error (which I recently learned most people don't know about), or is he pointing out the error that CGC made on the description of the signatures? The whole auction reeks of deception if you ask me... It's like the guy the other day who was selling #1 and #2 (in two separate auctions), and they were PGX graded yet in the title he explicitly wrote "GCG GRADED" on each...Oh hell no, I wasn't about to let that fly. I messaged him immediately and was like dude you need to change your title ASAP, that's just wrong on so many levels. I don't try to be some internet vigilante or anything but when I see shady eBay auctions I speak up and let the seller know that there's people out there watching and we're not gonna let you dupe some poor buyer out of their hard earned money. -

Yea I was gonna say I could slap together a website like that one (nicer, too) in under 120 minutes with "thewalkingdead" somewhere in the URL, and make a list and start calling different issues "variants", that doesn't mean they really are.... -
