There was a follow up article on Bleeding Cool that showed some images from Fu Manchu and talked about the over-reliance on yellow peril type stories as having something to do with it. Also a concern that it might reflect badly on the legacy of Siegel and Shuster, since some of their stories had that angle. But then they still permitted Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson to reproduce a fair amount of early stuff with similar stories in her book so who knows. Maybe there weren't enough pre-orders to justify the expense.
No idea on the "shocking revelation" part.

This was the only thing I've ever preordered from my LCS's Diamond catalogue. Great concept, agree wishing they'd do more. There was going to be a high quality collection of pre-Batman Detective Comics as well, but it got canceled (likely due to concern over some questionable for today stories). Would love to see that get resurrected, or even do a nice Famous First Edition of Detective 1.
But if you are looking for great reproduction of early material, do not miss DC Before Superman by Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson (the Major's granddaughter), which manages to reproduce a lot of Leo O'Mealia's Barry O'Neill and Bob Merritt stories, along with some nice early stuff from Siegel and Shuster and others.

I've got to think the Whizzer ranks pretty high up there on name alone. But he had a good run. Look to Daring Mystery Comics or some Centaur titles for some real obscure losers. The Ferret, Vapo-man, The Thunderer, the Blue Diamond. There are some fun ones out there. There is actually a whole book on wacky superheroes, I can't remember the name right now.

That same 3.0 PL 17 sold in April for $16,800 on HA. So somebody took a loss.

He was a great artist and a number of his covers are just pure golden age goodness. My favs would include Detective 24 with the counterfeiting operation, Adventure 45 with the machine gunner, and More Fun 47 with the lion battle. Yeah those Actions are sweet too, esp. 12, 14, and 16.

I watched live and won a couple. It was a weird auction. Some stuff got fought over and went for strong prices and some went very quickly and for less than I thought they should, a few by a lot less than they should have. I agree the timing may not have been best for some buyers on Thursday night and things are not great in the world right now which probably didn't help either. But it wasn't just the Planets, there were some real deals on the other titles like Jungle 11, Rangers 3 & 14, and a number of early Fights. I think FH buyers are really keying on strong color books now. And they really seemed to avoid Restored books.
I was happy to come away with these two and tried for a number of others. Quite the collection Karl. What an achievement putting this run together.

I tried to bid but I feel like that one opened and closed in like 5 seconds (HA needs to work on keeping items open a little longer, I think). A 1.5 copy (albeit nicer looking) just closed on eBay 4 days ago for $1,675. Someone got a real deal here.

Great image. Just got a Feb 35 Blue Book at a show recently (for 50 cents!) and found these inside. Looks suspiciously like the cover to Adventure 39...
And Heritage just sold a 38 and 39 a few weeks back, the 38 in restored Fr/Gd did $900 and the 39 in gd/vg with tape down the spine and tanning did $2160.

With the passing of Jon Berk (jbcomicbox), I hope everyone takes some time to read through this thread from the beginning and see all the great stuff he posted over the years, from articles to info to books he had. He was a treasure trove of information, particularly on Centaur books and the convoluted history around them. I'm proud to own a few of his books. Sadly I never had a chance to meet him. His impact on the hobby is immense. Rest In Peace.

Wow you aren't kidding. I think more than half Church copies!!! My favorites would be the 35 in 9.4, 53 in 9.6 Rockford, 64 in 9.6 Church, and of course the 42 double cover Church in 9.2/9/.6!!

You might think that. But check out vintage Ferrari results. The model made famous in Ferris Bueller just keeps climbing, one sold last year for $18 million, after another did $11 million in 2008. They could be had in the early 70s for a few grand. Less than 50 exist. Pretty good corollary to Action 1, except you can't drive it.
