The Official Commission Collecting Thread
mister_not_so_nice replied to easyt63's topic in Original Comic Art
Definitely Mike DeCarlo(I recognize that boat picture and lamp from my own commission ) Brian' collecting "theme" is various characters using Ipods and the like (I believe he works for the company that makes Ipods). Mostly he has them with an Ipod, but I guess they had to delve deeper in to the product line with so may characters on one page. -
I've been obsessing over the artwork of Jeremy Baum for the last two months or so. His art style isn't very "realistic" nor do I completely understand the stories he writes, but I have become a huge fan anyway. If you like the "underground" artists, check out his art in my CAF . I somehow ended up buying about 70 pages and will be uploading them for some time

The Official Commission Collecting Thread

Not new commissions, but new pics of older commissions. I saw both of these gentlemen at the Phoenix Comic Con this past weekend. First I asked Garth Ennis to flip through my portfolio of PREACHER cover commissions so I could get a picture of him holding one. He opened the book and said, "I don't need to look any further." and the picture was taken. Later, when he did go through the commissions he asked me if he could snap a pic of the Colleen Coover cover, and he pulled out his camera. Next, Mr. Bob Layton holding two commission he did for me circa 2006. This is an amazing story. When I asked if I cold get a picture of him holding the commission he did for me he said, "Sure." and asked my name. He said he remembers all of the commissions he does for people. He said he remembered my commission distinctly and proceeded to tell me some things I was shocked he remembered. In fact, he remembered that he had actually done two commissions for me. I literally got goose bumps. This is a guy that must hundreds of commissions a year, and certainly has done quite a few since mine 6 years ago and he remembered every detail. -
I've never really understood the sentiment of "Glad I got this page back in my collection." until today. If you like a page so much, don't sell it to begin with. I picked up this DPS quite a few years ago and had high hopes of getting many more pages from the issue. In my opinion it is one of the best single issues EVER and certainly one of my favorites. What I didn't know when I got the DPS was that another collector also had plans to complete the issue for his own collection. It's not comic books, we both can't have a complete run. . So, after some persuasion on his part, and some understanding of the desire to put a book back together I sold the DPS with the stipulation that if he ever let it go I would get first chance to buy it back. Well, that time came earlier this week. I was contacted by the owner saying he was ready to sell me the DPS plus the other 18 pages he had gathered from the issue . Now I am just 2 pages away from putting this issue back together

There's the problem. Don't pay for your commissions up front. Artist fail. Should be ashamed to take someone's money and string him along for two years. Of course he should! But you gotta protect yourself nonetheless. Or pay half up front, half on completion. Either way Im exhausted from that story I guess, try to pay as little as you can up front? I figure, with a story like this, if nothing had been paid up front, the buyer would be much less pissed. Instead of feeling ripped off (and justifiably so), he'd just be chuckling to himself at what a flake Rubenstein can be. Of course, had payment not been made up front, Rubenstein may well not have flaked! At any rate, I'm not trying to blame the poster. Just pointing out the obvious, cuz that's how I roll. Would anyone consider using a 3rd party escrow service to avoid situations like this in the future?

New to OA Collecting, Advice, tips?
mister_not_so_nice replied to FrankJP's topic in Original Comic Art
If the comics you have been reading for the past 8 years were current comics I'd say your chances of finding (buying may be another task unto itself) the OA are pretty good. Now that you've decided which title/artist you'd like to collect, leave no stone unturned. Of course a CAF search always comes first. If the specific page isn't there are other pages from the book posted? Other artwork from the artist? Does one collector seem to "specialize" in that title/artist? Ask that collector, politely, for some assistence. 99% are more than willing to help. Post a WTB thread in the OA sales forum As was said, vigilance, persistence and patience will pay off -
New to OA Collecting, Advice, tips?

-Start SLOWLY. When I first figured out I could own an original page from a comic I spent every hour searching and every cent buying these one of a kind gems. Plus random sketches on eBay, whatever. There is more out available out there than you can afford. I remember one board member saying they spent six months "shopping" before buying their first piece. Find the stuff you are interested in, bookmark it and keep looking. - Stay away from buying every page you "like" or "is cool." You'll be selling these for pennies on the dollar when your OA fund dries up and the piece you "really want" turns up for sale. - I Think the value will be determined more on the differing artists that whether one is a variant or not. There is still only one of each no matter how many books were published. - - How do independent comics compare versus Marvel or DC? Some suck, some are better, some are worse. Is ever MARVEL comic good? Is comic art from every DC comic better than art from every Independent? I think there are way to many variables here. -I'm not an expert, but I play one on the CGC boards Good Luck (thumbs u and take your time.
