  1. I like the Blue Beetle, although I prefer the SA Ted Kord version from Ditko who simply was a more nuanced, interesting character than Dan Garrett. I like that he survived to the present day and he's still a relevant hero somewhere on the periphery of the League (a bit like Booster Gold his buddy). I like that he's a bit overlooked overall and yet how many superheroes that were introduced in the late 1930's still are active in comics today? Not many. He gets no respect. I started gobbling the books up in a number of years ago and along the way they started getting expensive so I slowed my roll a bit. I hoarded BB1 in particular.
  2. Just got back from CGC my beater copy of Fighting Yank 23 and found it funny that comicconnect refers to this book as "Oftentimes referred to as The Poor Man's Suspense 3". I'd like to think this book stands on it's own merit but I suppose Poor Man's Suspense 3 isn't a bad label. Come to think of it, I guess Ginger #4 could be Poor Man's Archie #50 Any thoughts on this book being a Poor Man's Suspense 3 or other books you want to add to the mix that are a "Poor Man's Anything"?
  3. I'm not a big fan of some of the early Superman books, I feel they lack some of the interesting cover compositions found in Action Comics. Superman #2 in particular doesn't excite me much at all. That said, I respect these books so I could never say they mean nothing to me.
  4. Put in a bid and went to the USF basketball game, got back and won the book slightly under most recent gpa. The book really hasn't moved in price one way or another in five years but I wanted a copy in 9.2+
  5. Funny you mention BB41 as it was the first book that came to mind for me when I saw the subject on this thread. I'm glad you think it's common as well because it's been some sort of private joke for me whenever I search for Beetle I keep seeing this damn book. That said, I like it and nice copy - I suppose common in comparison to other books in the run but it's no SA book that's for sure.
  6. Opening up a thread to share stories on a collection someone purported to have for you only to find out it was a complete bust, or dead end. Since this happened to me twice recently, I'm sure it happens often and there may be some nuggets out there. I got to talking about comic books with my car mechanic in San Francisco, a gentleman I would say is in his mid to late 60's. If you've seen his shop, you'll know the man saves everything. Stacks of old tires, every conceivable part in a heap somewhere (including broken ones) and about 5-6 project cars that he hasn't touched in well over a decade. His passion is corvettes and since that's what I bring to him we get to talking quite a bit. He mentioned he had a comic collection somewhere in his mom's garage and that no one had gone in there in well over a decade or more since she passed. He said there was a good chance his collection and that of his brother's was probably still in there. I asked what he recalled having. He said they collected mostly superhero stuff, preferably Batman and Superman and that most of the books were probably 1950's or late 40's. He said he'd go check the next weekend and if they were there he would give them to me. I said no, they're probably worth a lot and I would price them out. He didn't make it to that garage until about 2 or 3 months later and we synced up again when once again there was a coolant leak on my classic vette. He said he looked through the garage in its entirely and none of the comics were there anymore, no idea what happened. Total bust.
  7. checking in with Crimes by Women #3 finally got the book in hand from clink for that first purchase of 2018
  8. Book sold for $15,656. Strong price for this copy. The seller couldn't give me any history on pressing or past owners and I couldn't pull the trigger to participate as a result. That said, a good outcome for the buyer.
  9. some interesting things happening and some things that would be interesting if they're happening but they're not. GPA Analysis is a really good tool but it's desktop browser based. It's clumsy to navigate the browser version on mobile devices but have had to do that a number of times, particularly if I'm at a con. More and more people are sharing and selling books on Instagram but I don't like it because I don't think it's a good place to transact money. It's hard to see the book on IG if you're contemplating a buy. But it's connected tons of people in the space and expanded the collector base probably significantly. Heritage has a good mobile app, CC and Clink don't have one. That would be helpful. Every time those auctions close I have to plant myself in front of the desktop.
  10. That Archie Comics 50 8.0 will go to the stratosphere, seems like it's the hottest book on the planet
  11. Thanks. I pinged the seller to ask if the book was pressed in the recent slabbing but have not heard back yet.
  12. Happy new year. Was looking for help if anyone has a link to where the 6.5 copy that was sold per gpa on 12/17 for $18,850? There's a 6.5 currently at auction on the Bay and I'm curious to know if that is the same copy being sold or if it's a different copy. Thanks!
  13. Howdy folks, got one book for ya tonight. One of my favorite covers in the run. Terms: -No returns, shipping included in price (USPS Priority mail box), no international shipping (US only), Paypal only (sorry need the money for the Holidays) -First gets the book and trumps PM Mystery Men Comics #12 Apparent 1.5 Restored Slight/Mod. (C-2). Restoration includes: pieces added to cover, glue on centerfold (Tape on cover & centerfold). Brittle pages. $275 Some lens flare from my scanner.
  14. I used to be much more deliberate when I first started collecting a number of years ago. Now I mostly buy because the book feels right at the price and I like a certain copy and I give it a go. There's not as much rhyme or reason because I just trust what I'm doing at this point. Some books are just cool and I'll take a crack at it. That's my plan for 2018, just feel like vibe see what happens, glad I can buy some GA books.
  15. Here the terms. US only sale. Shipping included in price (USPS Priority Mail). No returns. Payment by paypal only. First in thread gets the book and takes precedence over PM. Note, I bought the book raw believing to be unrestored and here we are. I am selling at a loss at this price so I don't have too much wiggle room. If you collect Beetle this is tough book with only 11 in the census and I think one of the better covers outside of the early Lou Fine work. Restoration includes: color touch, piece added. Light Tan to Off-White Pages. $325
  16. great pickup and I thought one of the best books in the auction
  17. I grinded through about 6 or 7 extended bidding sessions and got the book I wanted. Too bad it's not from "Hidden Valley Collection"
  18. well I respectfully disagree. I don't think it's just a matter of price. This book belongs at the top of the stack for a host of reasons beyond just price and that simply will never change. I also don't consider this a hobby
