  1. I always wonder if there is an satisfied 'end user' for the 'speculated' on books for ultra random characters. I can see people going back for characters that were semi-famous that you might have liked when you were younger, or were part of your favorite team.

But three years from now will there be anyone (who still owns one) that is satisfied they paid $15 for a raw X-Force 19? Or $100 for a CGC 9.8? Or are they all left with the dumbest dealers and speculators holding the bag too long and too hard.

Or are there enough true nerds and/or completionists that have enough disposable income to just pop up on ebay around movie time and say 'hmmm oh that character was pretty cool, I'll just buy a high grade copy for $20 to check out their origin and/or buy an ultra high grade graded copy?' But that same person did not have the foresight to buy earlier, or to wait til later..

So far the only bags I'm still holding is 1st app of Mind-Boggler (still time before the movie) and GOTG 1 2nd print (still 2 more movies coming out), and a few X-Factor 23's.

  2. Wow, that design for Lotus might be the worst thing I have ever seen.

The crowd actually created her, They wanted her to be female and Todd just drew what they crowd suggested they do. It was the crowd's decision to make her female.

So it only took Marvel 20 years to catch up to what people really wanted, women characters forefront.

  3. This type of practice is becoming standard for many comic sellers. Why do the work if someone else will let you know whats hot by ordering multiples, then cancel them and raise your price.

I don't get it. It's lazy and just plain bad business. They are in the business of selling comics, keep up with it. If some random collector can beat you to the punch, then you should suck it up and fill the order.

Ive made a few purchases like this where I got a little note in my box saying " Congrats! This book is HOT now! " as if to say... " your lucky I shipped it to you".

Jot down their name, and never buy from them again.

This type of practice is becoming standard for many comic sellers on Atomic Avenue.

  4. We are debating Spawn...right!

The all art, no story Spawn. The millions of copies of nearly worthless comics (yes I have a bunch) The crappy cartoon and crappy movie Spawn! (And yes I watched them) The I can't believe there is still a comic about this character. And the idea that an add is a first appearance makes it more absurd. I love the debate but man let's choose a better character.

There are truckloads of comics worth less than Spawn #1.

I recall buying the VHS and it being Todd talking about how awesome he is, and it had a good amount of Spawn content. I didn't like the mini comic since at the time Pearson didn't compare to Todd. Regardless, this was literally years after Spawn #1.

I don't think it was years as the facts and illusions set has a date of 1992 on it. The vhs comic set must have packaged after the August SDCC though because that's where the footage is from but I have no idea when the mini comic was published. It's something that definitely warrants further research for Spawn fans.

Mini-Comic measuring 4x7.5 inches and published by Gladstone. It is released as part of the promotional VHS at the August 1992 San Diego Comic Convention, namely "Todd McFarlane's Comic Book 'Facts & Illusions'" and "Todd McFarlane's Lotus". The VHS recorded date is 1993.

    Assuming this is correct, http://spawncollection.blogspot.com/2010/01/1993.html

What's next? DC Direct Currents? Dark Horse Insider? Printed out sheets from the internet ads?

DC Direct Currents, hahaha, no way...wait, what were we talking about?

    DC Direct Currents

What it's actually sold for is a little more relevant:

I agree 100%, but I will say that the usual trend is that there are some listed very cheap by a seller that has thousands of books listed. Those obviously go initially, then the big dogs are left. Agreed, asking is not selling price.

  7. I feel sorry for the people that don't know any better that you guys hope to swindle.

Welcome to the thread. Nobody, that I recall, has mentioned selling. We are having a grown (sometimes) discussion on the merits of ADs / previews / 1st appearances.

Please feel free to contribute something useful to the conversation.

Welcome to the thread? I've been here 3 years longer than you have.

As well as in plenty of other places on this forum. And I've contributed a HECK of a lot more to this forum than just information on 'copper's heating up.'

And I AM contributing something to THIS conversation. I'm calling BS on those of you who hope to pass this idea off as real information so that you can sell copies of worthless Previews for far too much money to collectors who don't know better.

The ONLY reason to fan the flames of this idea is to raise the interest in these catalogs so they can be sold.

    It's dishonest.

And I'll speak out about it as much as I like.

    :flamed:

Welcome to Coppers Heating Up thread.

    Rust #1 is heating up.

  9. A one page B&W preview amounts to a 1st app to this guy?

wouldn't there have been something like previews back then? what would comic shop owners be basing their ordering on 2 or 3 months before this -- just the title of the book and mcfarlane being on it (probably enough back then)? presumably spawn appeared in some sort of solicitation in print form before then.

calling these things a cameo or whatever is nuts. if you want to collect first advertising apps, that's fine, but call it what it is. and i love the other listing "significantly devalues malibu sun 13"

This Spawn Cover came out 1 month before Rust 1

    Here's my Spawn list:

Previews issue: first appearance and cover ( March 1992 )

Rust 1a,1b: Second appearance depending on what other Adventure comics are discovered ( April 1992 )

Malibu Sun 13: Third appearance, Second Cover, first appearance in a comic book publication ( May 1992 )

Spawn 1: Third cover, first appearance in a narrative.

Then there's Crusade Comics Spawn 1 which has a released date of 1992 for a convention that happened in August? I am not sure what the actual publication date is but it could predate all of the above. Either way it is definitely the first appearance of Sam & Twitch.

Not sure if you saw my comment earlier, but according to Diamond, those Previews during the 90's had a regular print run of 90,000 copies.

and? how many of them are still around even? Most shops let customers use them and then thrown them out as they are beat.

  10. Yeah... I was a little confused about Frozen... I know tons of books that have low print runs nd didn't get ordered... I see them in the 1.00 bins all the time... But then again... Disney collectors can be fanatics... That's what you have to hope for I guess... Somehow they catch wind of a low run one shot that's hard to find...

Probably because of what Figment did.
