Regarding reprints...Do we really collect Bakers for the stories?

I'm not an expert on any of those...but the last one might be a little scarce.

I think if nobody gets stupid and buys them he will.

I bought the first one off the stand...the 2nd one was given to me...or it came in a batch I bought a long time ago.

We should work on that over the next few days. Toss out ideas, figure out dues, elect a boss...yada, yada...but, seriously, we should try to get together on this. Remember, in numbers there is strenth...

I'm working on a run of early FF's, all coverless or very, very low grade. That way I get to read original books for a minimum price. Where most people are upgrading, I'm downgrading. Ya know...I was going to say that as a joke...but didn't want to insult...

I think we need to all show our want lists, make a pact not to spend over double guide on any Baker book, and help each other locate our wants. This madness needs to end. It's time for the Baker Union...

So, two of us got sumpthin'... Why would you want a coverless FF5? Do you have a nice cover for one? I don't understand replacing a G with a CV...

Wow...the HA auction was full of surprises...some got deals, some didn't. Books I thought would go thru the roof went for reasonable prices and others I thought would go for cheap went thru the roof. Someone paid nearly $1,000 for the WR #3 in F-. Unbelievable. I bid on one book and lost it by $20...grumble, grumble. Who won some of those books? Did any of you luck out?

I'm pretty sure it was in an RBCC from around that period that G.B. Love wrote about how the sale of a Superman 1 for $20 represented the beginning of the end of the hobby because with such prices, the average fan could no longer hope to build complete runs. The reference to the varying prices of FF 1 also indicates that people were pretty blasé about condition and grading in those days. I'll venture a guess that the dealer with FF 1 at $10.50 was probably Howard Rogofsky. As I remember, in his TOS Rogofosky stated that he didn't consider writing or tape to be defects. Yes, he did say that...he was a terrible dealer. I only bought one book from him. Those were the good old days...

I've found my share...but my wants are limited (fortunately for my budget), so I probably have fewer issues than most of you guys. I just try to look for bargains when I see them, or break out the bucks for issues I really want. It's really too bad the comic hobby has gotten so commercial and expensive. Makes a person want to start collecting 60s Archies or (ugh) Charltons or something...

Did you guys know you pay too much for FFs...it says so right in this article from the RBCC #50 from 1967: Houston...I think we have a problem...

A fellow boardie once told me "It's feast or famine" when it comes to Baker. I think it's feast time right now...but you're going to pay as if you were ordering food at Disneyland or a ballpark. I'm glad my Baker taste is limited... 10 more years? I've been collecting Baker already for 20 years...I'm the new guy on the forum, but not the new guy on the block...and I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. this could be the dawn of the Baker renaissance, or it could be the dawn of the Baker implosion... I was reading an old issue of RBCC from 1967 last night and found this in an article from a Canadian dealer. He must have been a prophet: Hmmm, whatever happened to those $10.50 FF #1s...

Yeah...the obvious...I hate it...it happened to L.B. Cole books, and now to Baker...but it will slow down as more books surface and everyone who wants to overspend gets all the books they want...just like it happened to Cole books...then, a few people are going to take baths...

This "strong price" stuff is killing me... I refuse to play that game. Bakers are not so rare that we need to spend hundreds of $$$ on common issues. It's time to revolt and refuse to pay those prices. Sure, it feels good if you already own the book, but how are we going to ever complete our collections if dealers think they can get $300 a book, no matter what it is? I've only paid over $100 for one Baker book. This is ridiculous. I refuse to play that game. Bakers are like women, they just show up when you least expect it. I choose to wait for the bargains. OK...maybe someone else didn't...and now they do...however, being a database junkie, I really enjoy that sort of thing. I have almost 9,000 photo entries in a reptile database (99.99% of which are my pics). I think I need a life...

You know...you can contribute any scan of a pedigree book you see...it doesn't have to be yours... But check Matt's listings before you do...so you don't duplicate anything for nuthin'. I uploaded 40 scans in the last couple days, just for giggles and to watch my contributor totals rise... I consider it charity work.
