The top is cut a bit close to the logo, but the bottom has more white, so it's probably just a manufacturing defect.

On 6/12/2022 at 5:50 AM, Ryan. said:This quote always bugged me since I couldn't reconcile it with my own knowledge of Baker. Feldstein says that Baker was famous for headlights. But that's not really true. Baker was famous for being the overall best and fastest draftman of GGA in his time, and probably ever (and also for dressing nattily as everyone seemed to point out). He wasn't famous for drawing big juggs and often didn't. This Feldstein comment is reductive and somewhat insulting. I think his memory failed him here.
When I first bought Art of Glamour and began collecting Baker in earnest, I took Feldstein's statement at face value. Eventually, though, it became apparent that almost all true Matt Baker art was tastefully drawn, and that the work that was sexually over-the-top might not be his at all, or at the very least is his art modified by a heavy handed inker.
Even when Baker drew a street corner hooker, she was not gaudy.

Art of Glamour correctly left #120 off the list of Baker work in Jumbo.
The CGC note is probably based on the Overstreet Price Guide, which as recently as the 50th edition misattributed Sky Girl to Baker through issue #130. (It may still be wrong in the 51st edition, which I don't have.)

I talked to Feldstein.
Sorry. I should have read your post more carefully. Feldstein doesn't come to mind when I see PL 17 (just my opinion again), but Kamen certainly does.

He talked about his great drawing and how he helped him improve his own art. They worked next to each other at Iger. It's been a number of years.
Too bad Kamen didn't specifically discuss covers with you. Perhaps Kamen and Baker collaborated in some way on the cover of PL17.
To my eyes, the covers of Fight 47 and All Top 13 (both attributed to Kamen), when compared to Phantom Lady 17, bear more Kamen hallmarks than Baker. The hair, the eyebrows, the staring eyes, and the mouths are all similar.
BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION. Everyone else is free to think whatever they like. I am not trying to change anyone's mind. I'm just stating what I see.

That's right. We talked about how Baker taught him to draw. Never once did he say, you know that famous cover he was suppose to have drawn?
So, he did not bring up the drawing of PL 17. Which of his covers did he discuss with you?

That’s exactly what I say about Phantom Lady 17
You'll get no argument from me. It's not a popular opinion, but I've long doubted that Baker did that cover.

I believe I've seen that copy before. The late Bart Bush had it in his private collection and showed it to me at an OAFCon in Oklahoma a few years ago.
Bart had this one, too. https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?ItemID=55987224

well, yes, more so the Promise bump and a general sign of the times. Of course Baker books are rare in 8.5 and above, but the truth is there are probably more higher grade Baker romance per slabbed issues than any other publisher save Fawcett (and that's due solely to the Crowleys). Romance in high grade aint happening across the board. But Baker books have always sold at multiples to other romance titles in all grades.
But back to the Promise books. Junie bought everything (except funny animal books) but still remarkably little romance considering the genre's saturation of the market in 1949 and 1950. Only 4 Baker romance in that whole 5000 book lot. Compare that to this list of Bakers which are still out there, either unslabbed or still unsold, waiting to make an appearance...one day.
No Prize if you can guess what "pedigree" these books belong to. And it isn't Church. That's a whole different romance story.

That Detective is one that I always considered a classic cover. Someone would be lucky to have that. GOD BLESS...

It is a great issue, featuring classic D ick Sprang art on a story with the "Loch Ness Monster." If I didn't have a raw undercopy that I enjoy reading, I would not sell this one.
