  1. Can you actually see the silver bells and cockle shells from your window? Do you find it hard to trust in general? I find trust is an achievement, to be earned, and not a gift, to be given away. And it is this philosophical difference that keeps us at odds. Wait, so you implicitly trust everyone first?
  2. Can you actually see the silver bells and cockle shells from your window? Do you find it hard to trust in general? He's former law enforcement and a lawyer. I'm not but I still agree that after seeing things happen in life that the comments serve no real practical purpose. Even if the people making the comments are not trying to undermine the deal the only other purpose they can serve is to make a buyer feel bad about the sale.
  3. Yes, it happens. It is not the majority of the 'congrats' I'm not sure what your point is that you are debating. 'Congrats' is innocent and innocuous, except for uselessly bumping sales threads. 'Man that was a steal' is entirely unproductive and shouldn't be posted in someone's sales thread after an item was purchased.
  4. The innocent 'congrats' is innocent enough, even if it does bump threads unnecessarily enough in a place where real estate space is already in short supply. But there is a difference between saying 'congrats' and someone undermining a sale (as Chris said, it can be done with malicious intent or just through being socially inept, which seems to be common among comic nerds, me included) is an entirely different thing. And it has happened with malice and it does happen. It's a real thing.

  6. comicnut1969 is yet another Ryan Elliott eBay shill account. Good to know. So he has the capability of posting proper scans but doesn't. Not saying the books or auctions were tampered with but I did think the JIM #83 he sold looked overgraded, even with the fuzzy pics and the TOS #39 8.0 went for ridiculously strong money. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Journey-into-Mystery-83-1st-appearance-of-Mighty-THOR-8-0-graded-cgc-Avengers-/281749738193?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item419997d2d1%3Ag%3AHYUAAOSwPcVVpbHD&nma=true&si=gJ0oxoIfITvUKsDi%252BCRsvwWeWLY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tales-of-Suspense-39-1st-appearance-of-Iron-Man-8-0-graded-cgc-/271930206205?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f504da7fd%3Ag%3AK4AAAOSw9N1VpbBb&nma=true&si=gJ0oxoIfITvUKsDi%252BCRsvwWeWLY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
  7. The completely innocent "congratulations" posts have already begun. Next comes: "What a steal! PM sent!" And "OH MAN!!! I woulda paid more!!! LET ME KNOW IF THE DEAL FALLS THROUGH!!" I don't see the problem with that but apparently it ruffles feathers. I guess people see it as an invitation for the seller to seek a better offer than has already been accepted. Trying to slip in front of the buyer by waving money around. I don't read it that way, but a more cynical (or less naive perhaps) person might. It's a classless move. Someone sells something and then a crowd forms and starts spouting out about 'wow, that was freaking really good deal!' or 'wow that went cheap!'. To me it's like rubbing the seller's nose in the fact that he left too much money on the table.
  8. The crazy thing is the Quadman is literally 30 or 40 miles from me. Where is CAHokie?
  9. IMO CGC doesn't let one missing staple (production) affect the grade up into the lower NM range. It can affect the grade north of 9.4 and I'd bet money that it would probably prevent an otherwise flawless book from being in 9.8 and up.
  10. Can I ask the point of this "locked points" thread idea? It has always been unintelligible to me. It's basically a Western thing, which is probably why you find it unintelligible. You basically be as stupid as you can until the moderators lock a thread out of sheer frustration. The last one to have a post in the thread gets points. Sound fun? It was actually fun at one point (if you can find fun in wasting time) when it was a very isolated game but it became overwhelming when the game started to dominate the entire chat forum. Then it just became a problem.
  11. How do you know who the problem was in the relationship? Maybe it was both. Or maybe not. But speculating like this is just plain unreasonable.
  12. ..... I bought my first book off the boards from you..... an 8.0 CGC copy of FF 13. We ended up speaking by phone for a while that night. People sometimes scoff at high post counts.... but 10 posts a day over 10 years puts a chap at close to 40,000....... I suppose in my case, I'm an under-performer GOD BLESS.... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) (thumbs u ..... you've been a great friend over the years, Roy. Especially after I realized you looked exactly like one of my best friends who once hot wired a steamroller and drove it down Main Street so he wouldn't have to stagger home from the bar That was a terrific VF copy of that book. I remember the steam roller story!
  13. I felt the same way in the early 2000's when I got back into collecting for the 2nd time. I couldn't believe what comics were going for. The first book to blow me away was Daredevil #131. I saw a 9.8 copy sell for something like $2000 and was just unable to believe it. Then I manned up and bought a raw copy for something like $300 - But yeah, there is always a paradigm shift when you've been out of it for a while. And I do agree that there is much that is cyclical.
  14. It's simple. GPA will round to the nearest dollar because it takes a lot less space to put a decimal point and two more places on a number on the screen 100's of times.
  15. That's exactly the solution. Mods give wrist slaps for the most opaque things but something like this people are able to do over and over. It just doesn't make sense.
  16. I am willing to bet most people are 32-38 when they sign up. Obviously not all, but I bet 3 out of five. I'm betting that the average age has moved younger since I signed up.
  17. I think the owner gets to choose to get a qualified grade, OR accept the non-witnessed sig as a defect, getting a lower blue label grade. Someone can correct me if I'm mistaken. Or because the well placed writing on the cover is allowed in the 7.0 grade. OR both.
  18. Thanks. It's hard to say why some have staining and some don't. Is it storage? The inks that were used? Both? Both. SA Marvels have a similar problem. I think the inks they both used were extremely cheap and the oils from the interior inks eventually seep into the cover causing that yellow halo. My experience has been that it's often a combination of storage conditions - I believe warm climate causes the oil to transfer easier than a cool climate. I could be wrong. None of this is scientific but it's what I've picked up from observations over the years.
  19. Just keep the Elvis avatar so I will still know who you are. His signature line is a pretty good indicator as well I haven't looked at a sig line in over half a decade.
  20. That's a terrible shot. His head shouldn't be turning in the helmet.
