So the best investment after all these years might have been buying all the worthless books in quarter boxes, storing them, and selling those same worthless books for $5 today. hm

Back when I started collecting as a teenager, I couldn't afford any of the big keys, so I built a collection from discount boxes. Plenty of the books I picked up that ways are still discount bin fodder, but plenty also got hot at some point. I think all of my Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars issues came from discount bins. The Rocket Raccoon mini and Logan's Run 6 (first Thanos solo story) are just a couple others off the top of my head I can think of.

Double cover and the color was printed off register. Do y'all think they are two separate errors, or are they somehow connected? If they're not connected then I don't want to calculate the odds of both happening on the same book cuz...

I imagine unconnected, unless they had a press that also was doing the bindery. Or you want to consider the "connection" general lack of upkeep in a facility that leads to errors?

Seems kinda sad that "no upside down books" is something to specifically mention as worthy of celebration.

I'd actually prefer that, if I got to pick what sort of error my slab would have. I was the owner of an upside down Silver Surfer book, and I sold it at a premium compared to copies that were properly encapsulated in the same grade, because the owner of a Silver Surfer collection wanted it as an oddity for his collection.

A few years ago I tried to get some newton rings fixed and was told that they weren’t covered because they are natural and present in nearly all CGC books. That answer bothered me because clearly we know that isn’t true. I mean at the time I called I had hundreds of slabs in front of me and only 2-3 had significant rings. I told the person that and they said I was wrong and that every single slab has them it’s just some are worse than others. So I said well these are clearly really bad ones so why can’t we exchanged the super bad ones. And they said because newton rings are in all slabs. Bit circular but I gave up.

That's what they want. From their release:

    Quote

Mechanical Errors represent a very small (and declining) percentage of overall submissions due to CGC’s efforts to improve quality control through enhanced training and processes to better prevent or catch mistakes. These efforts have not only improved quality control, but also turnaround times, which are at the fastest speeds in years. CGC continues to work diligently to both reduce the occurrence of Mechanical Errors and maintain fast turnaround times.

Mechanical errors will continue to be a declining percentage of overall submissions, not because their QC has improved, but rather because they're claiming that their flawed product is acceptable. And now they're going to have all of their customers wondering if they're going to be dinged for the shipping when they send their books back.

Random question for the group: how many counter-offers do you typically send to potential buyers on eBay? If someone sends you an offer, and you send a very fair counter, is that usually your final offer, or do you go back and forth a few more times?

If I've reached my limit in negotiations as either a seller or buyer, I'll just send the same offer that was previously sent, if the other party replied with a different figure. That should make it clear I'm done negotiating.

They are fixing problems for free, just giving you 14-days to inform them.

Your statement is making it sound like they are not going to do anything if a slab gets cracked in the mail from them to you.

Are they though? While personally I don't have a huge issue with Newton rings, some people do, and they used to cover those for a reholder, but they're no longer doing so. The question arises what other flaws are no longer covered. The answer to that question is as crystal clear as their cases with Newton rings. So if you ship back books that you think qualify and they don't, they're going to bang you for the shipping cost both ways.

They posted a message on their website (see bellow).

Another attempt to delay orders and scam people still hoping to receive their orders....

Google their reviews on Yelp and Reddit, so many angry customers of Asheville Comics (HotShot Comics)

If you are a victim of their scam don't forget to file complaints against hotshotcomics.com with all of these entities:

IC3 (FBI) for internet crimes, (NCDOJ) NC state Attorney General, USPSI Postal Inspector, FTC and BBB Better Business Bureau.

    From Hotshot Comics website:

How much do you want to bet, assuming that they actually follow through with shipping stuff out, that they didn't flip the original books for more than the pre-order when the market exploded, and now they're rebuying at cheaper prices to send out now that the market has softened.

    Thanks.

The first series ends at 441 though, right?

Id like to just complete that run and im up to 400.

Should I just wait until all those books come down in price?

I really dont wanna pay "key" money for hyped books.

Oh and the Campbell covers...are they variants?

I dont wanna collect variants, they make my head hurt.

Keep in mind that Amazing Spider-man is one of the most collected comics out there. So even with speculation down, you're probably not going to see a big dip. Who knows, you might actually see more attention, as people look away from the hot book of the week and into tried-and-true books to collect.

I am in the process of picking these runs up as well for some summer reading.  I agree with the previous poster though, I wouldn’t expect these to really go up in value. Collect what you enjoy though!

Of course, some pricy books from the last few decades are expensive because very few people expected them to go up in value (think: Newsstand editions, reprints, preview books, etc.). DC spec has been dead for some time, so I wouldn't be surprised if they put together a good slot of movies and people start paying a lot more attention to the books. That said, it'll probably only be key first appearances that really end up being worth the storage space (assuming you're only holding onto them for the potential of price appreciation, and not because you want them in your collection).

Got my first refund request in a very long time.
('item not as described' / 'damaged')

Worried it was damaged via USPS I quickly reached out to the buyer.
After exchanging multiple messages I discovered it was because they didn't agree with CGC's grade of 9.8 once they had it in hand
Received the book back, refunded, and blocked them.

I'm assuming eBay made you pay for the shipping?

Been delayed for almost a year. Can’t remember if I ordered a copy at my shop or not.

There is a TFAW variant for this book as well (limit 1500). Be interesting to see how that holds up.

You know, I didn't realize that this was delayed. When I saw that it was heating up I was kicking myself for slowing down on Star Wars speccing. But I just checked and it looks like I did pre-order some.

It is interesting to see how much the modern game has changed the past year or so. While raw prices have been relatively stable on books at shows, the prices on slabs has cratered to the point that it is no longer worth submitting a lot of them even in 9.8. Looking at a lot of the modern keys/hot books I am pricing now for the Calgary Expo, they sell for enough raw that the profit margin is higher than getting them slabbed. I am curious how this impacts CGC long term - will submission rates drop to the point where they have to cut prices?

Considering submission rates seem to have dropped (based on greatly reduced TAT) and they're raising prices, I imagine prices will continue to go up so income keeps up with expenses. You would think they'd give more time before the new prices go into effect if they're looking to boost submissions.

Found this "no price variant" for $25 at a show today - it's in gorgeous condition; a lot of times when I see these Nintendo comics they're often a bit beat up.

How do the staples look? A lot of the Nintendo books have rusted staples.
