I sold another tonight. The book has legs I upped the prices on my last copies. I cant keep one for more then a few days. Funny at my last show last month at its hottest nobody asked about it on my rack when I had it at $20 now they are selling for $35.

Dan Slott did a signing in NYC the day the book came out. He posted on Twitter what is now his only slab; an SS-copy that he bought from the store, signed, and submitted. He has big plans for the character.

Hi All- I am new to CGC and recently sent my first submission in. I have a couple of questions as I am not familiar with the process. I know Modern comic book turnarounds are pretty good right now but I am a little lost when checking the "my submissions" status.

My books arrived at CGC on 7/18/2023 and there is no update yet, only that my shipment was received and they are safe in their facility. My books are going to CCS first for pressing. Is that why I am not seeing any status update? Or does it actually take a while for your package to be opened and processed? I know people go crazy checking their status but I would have thought the books would have been opened by now and the process started. Apologies as I am sure this has been beaten to death in these forums but I really don't understand how this process works and when I can expect to see a status update. Thanks for any clarity you can provide, I really appreciate how great the comic community is. Cheers.

    Welcome to the boards!

When your submission is checked in, it will show up here as received. When they start pressing, it will show as "CCS in Process (or Progress)" as Lightning mentioned. When that's done and it goes to grading, it will show as received by CGC. And then updates again as it goes through the grading process.

Static: Shadows Of Dakota [Coipel Foil] #1:

    • 1st appearance of Ebon in comics.
    • Nikolas Draper-Ivey and Vita Ayala story.
    • Nikolas Draper-Ivey art.
    • Olivier Coipel cover.

Sweet. Key Collector is still calling this a cameo, but the sequence he's in is multiple pages, so I think it's fine to call it a full appearance. Ebon is teased in issue 6 of Season One, but it's basically just his voice in the shadows. Still a good pickup though, since I'm sure there are fewer of those than Shadows of Dakota #1.

I don't think either JC or Main St is a great place to find things to flip. They ARE a great place to find hard to find modern comics. But you'll have to sit on them for a year to flip at a profit. But you have to find good books somewhere. I don't know if JC does sales, Main St does once or twice a year (FCBD IIRC) and that is a good time to hit the wall books if this is a side hustle.

If I was looking to flip, I wouldn't be picking out a lot of mid-run Milestones.

JC Comics is a separate store -- (it's the initials of the owner)

Main Street is extremely easy to deal with -- Mike generally doesn't price based on eBay and I can't imagine those wouldn't be dollar books -- I'll ask him about it.

To be fair, many of the books he had definitely weren't dollar bin books. He had a copy of Static 1 Platinum, 2 copies of Static 45, and other late-run books that tend to sell for a bit more. But many of those books weren't bagged and/or showed damage. But a lot of the books that I was interested in were earlier-run, non-key books, many of them not in top condition, that I wasn't expecting to be more than $2-3 each. Which I would have happily paid to have the books as placeholders until I found better copies.

Since the OP is looking for mostly vintage stuff, I'll make a couple notes.  I'd avoid the Joker's Child.  Over the years the inventory Len and Caren have offered has slowly diminished and the somewhat erratic grading, missed restoration, and books missing pages (all of which I've personally experienced at times over 25 years going there) make it tough to recommend.  It used to be that the selection was pretty good and the store is well laid out, but this is no longer a place or destination spot for back issues, and I doubt many serious collectors would find it a good use of time.

Paradox is another store that I'll mention as sort of the 'B' tier in terms of back issues when you combine selection, price and grading accuracy.  Again, solid place and I'm sure you can dig for some deals, but I've never found anything they're worth picking up.  If you're on a limited window -- from New York -- it's really Zapp, Main Street and JC.

What is "JC" (I'm assuming not Joker's Child, since you said to avoid it)?

I did go to Main Street as well. I've mainly been hunting Milestone books, and they did have a longbox in storage which they let me flip through. They had a number of tough-to-find books, but they weren't in the best condition, and they did their pricing based on eBay asking prices. Even for common non-keys, they said the prices were going to be about 10/book (for books that are basically dollar-bin books).

Other than making an appointment to visit Metropolis, I don't think there's any where in New York City proper that is going to have what you're looking for.

If you're going to make a trip into Northern New Jersey exclusively to hunt back issues, I'd recommend Zapp.

But if you're willing to come a little further down the parkway, the gem of the bunch is Main Street Comics in Milltown NJ -- Mike Pfiefer -- the owner, just opened a huge additional side to his store that is filled with quality back issues, slabs etc., and I am not aware of anything quite like it in Jersey.  Also if you want something specific, I'd reach out in advance, as he may have it, but. not in store.  Mike is also an excellent, excellent grader.

JC Comics in Plainfield also has a fairly extensive selection of back issues, but still not as deep as Main Street.  Jeff is an insanely tight grader though, so you will find a lot of solid runs and a decent wall.

There are other stores in Jersey, but few with pricing, grading and selection that you'll find at either of these two and I mean in the whole state.  I'm generally familiar with every single store, and you'd have to get all the way down to south jersey and then there are a few more back issue centric stores.

I've been through NJ a few times in recent months, and I've tried to hit up some comic shops each time to hunt for stuff. Another NJ shop I'd add tot he list is the Joker's Child. They're a little OCD about their back issues, asking if you take a book out of the bins that you don't want, to leave it on top of the books rather than putting it back. That helps them keep everything alphabetized perfectly, which helps find stuff quickly.

Paradox Comics had a decent number of back issues as well.

I don't know how inclined you are to venture into NJ during your trip, or if you're even able, but 50 miles away from NYC is a great store I discovered last year in Cranbury, NJ called Doctor Wonder's. It's all back issues and quite vast and has that vibe and old paper smell of the comic shops I remember from my childhood.

Now I'm curious. There was a small indy book in the '90s with the same name, and by the looks of it, the same logo. I wonder if someone connected to the store published the book.

I sent in a 9.6 SS Stan Lee Daredevil #1 for the Alex Ross signing.  After I got notification that it shipped, I signed in and looked at the registry scan.  The scan showed a 9.6 SS label for the Ross sig, but completely omitted the Stan Lee sig.  The notes in the registry didn't match the label and stated it was now listed as a 9.2 Qualified SS Ross with "a name written on the cover".  When I actually received the book, it had the incorrect 9.2 label.

Mike got me in touch with customer service, and they're looking into it.  I'm not holding out much hope, unfortunately.  I know that they want to make things right, but I don't know if they're capable at this point.

I sent them a pic of the Qual SS label as shipped and looked up in the CGC census page.  There are 16 books listed under the 9.6 SS heading for the DD#1 2014 Ross Sketch cover, and my Stan Lee should be one of those.  There are no listings under the Qual SS 9.2 header.  All the more confusing...  :(

Maybe they still include that in the SS section of the census, since it's both Qualified and SS?

Is Silver Age Comics in Queens still around? Gus, the owner is a great guy and sold me a lot of GA when I was in town. He was also at SDCC and Torpedo up until a few years ago.

They're still there. I dropped in a few months ago; that's my neighborhood. Midtown's outlet store is also in the neighborhood, but they're only open on weekends, and the majority of their back issues are discount bin books.

I too dropped by Mysterious Time Machine a few months ago, only to find them gone.

With rent so high, most NYC stores don't carry a ton of back issues.

Wow what is it!? I never heard about before. Just was looking on mycomicshop somes series from the 90s and discover it. Why the value of these books are so crazy!? What happened to create a so great hype?

Are someone get the full run here?

I have a complete run of all of the original Milestone titles. They're really good reads, but with all of the new universes that popped up in the '90s, there was a lot to choose from. Since their focus was on minority characters, created predominantly by minority creators, I think a lot of people may have passed on them thinking they were being created for minority readers, but as a white guy from the suburbs, I had no problem finding the characters relatable. Since Static was a teen hero, I imagine the reading experience was similar to what readers got out of Spider-man when he was a new character in the '60s.

They recently rebooted the line, publishing "Season One" minis of the original four Milestone titles (Static, Hardware, Icon, and Blood Syndicate). The second Static mini (Shadows of Dakota) and an Icon vs. Hardware mini are in-progress right now.

At the time the original line was canceled, monthly sales numbers were only around 5000 copies or so, so a lot of those later Milestone books are tough to find, especially if you're looking for them in top condition.

What is the deal with that Knights of Steel 8? I don't see a lot of attribution to him for it but it looks like his style. MCS credits Rafael Albuquerque but it doesn't seem to match his style. I don't have the book but have the other Bratukhin variants, I am still needing Agents of Worlde and Nature's Labyrinth.

You are correct.  I think it's just an error on MCS's listing.  I am adding it to my want list.  Trying to buy Agents as a set somewhere.

Yeah, we hate those 99.3% feedback sellers.

When you have a half million feedbacks in a year, you probably have 2-5 times that many sales. Fewer people leave feedback than ever before, unless there's a problem. Likely over a million positives not reported.

All the big companies work the same way - stuff in, stuff out, as fast and cheaply as they can. This is one of the better performers.

If you want to take the risk that a dropshipper is going to buy something from you to send to someone else, claiming the condition is better than you said it was, then go ahead. I stated the reason why I'm going to block that eBayer; everyone can make their own decision.

  15. thrift.books

I have not had a problem with this account, but they appear to be another dropshipper with plenty of negative feedback regarding condition, and I don't want to have to get involved with returns for a book that they could potential buy from me to ship to someone else, claiming it's better condition than I do, so I blocked them, as I do with all dropshippers I see.
