  1. According to Key Collector:

Variant 'Netherrealms' Mortal Kombat DLC game edition
Intended for distribution at the 2020 Final Kombat live gaming competition in Chicago which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 lockdowns
⚠️ Buyer Beware: in January 2022, we alerted the comic book community about potential market manipulation for this issue based on concerns that the greater portion of its inventory was being held back to give the illusion of scarcity
The Editor-In-Chief at Todd McFarlane Productions relayed to Key Collector the following quote, transcribed to this description directly:
"So this was a small event to begin with. Only a couple hundred issues were produced. It was canceled to the public but it was still held in private for the players. What we were told was that less than 50 copies were distributed by the event organizers to the players and their +1’s. The rest, along with all the other free swag was trashed due to the cost of shipping it back to the MK offices. We have worked with them before so there is no reason to believe that this was not the case. I think it would be fare to say that less than 50 copies exist out in the wild at this point."
As of August 2023, it has been disclosed publicly that at least one seller made a bulk purchase of approximately 70 issues. The seller claims that he purchased 1/6th of the entire print run which would equal 420 copies - far more than what the Editor at McFarlane Productions relayed to us in his email
The canceled Mortal Kombat event was held at the Park West in Chicago which has an occupancy capacity of 1,000 persons
It is still unclear how many copies of this issue exist but as of August 2023, it is far greater than what has been communicated by those behind the scenes
In October 2022, a 9.8 sold for $5,500. In August 2023, 5 copies in 9.8 sold for an approximate average of $900

Here is the PDF if anyone wants it:

I joined the Valiant Group on Facebook and the artists themselves do not believe that DMG is going to fulfill the Kickstarter.  Basically the took the money, have not paid all artists and have gone silent.  The artists pushed the company to at least release the PDF before they went dark on this matter.  So since this book was never meant for store shelves and only through a kickstarter that will not be fulfilled, you can enjoy a copy here.

Free digital PDF Comic.  It was actually a fun read.  I would have liked having it in my Eternal Warrior collection.

The guy who was in charge of Design and Production for Valiant since the relaunch in 2012 was laid off recently. He posted to the Facebook group, suggesting that the book was not close to going to the printer, and one of the special covers he was working on was likely not going to happen, because he doesn't think anyone else knew how to do it.

One slap in the face is that apparently it's going to be available as a TPB from the company taking over Valiant's publishing.

Given new valiants current problems; it looks like never.

Yeah. Let's see them handle the relatively simpler task of printing and shipping the Kickstarter they launched a couple years ago first, and work up to more complicated things from there.

I'm always surprised how many people want to talk about prices in the middle of an auction. Until it's over, they're meaningless (unless you want to see what the minimum next bid will be).

If the idea is to draw attention to the auction to attract bidders, it's totally understandable.

Why the switch to junk boxes, bubble wrap and tape that rips? This is the way my last two orders returned from CGC. My books are flopping around on the inside of the boxes.

I had shipments like this a while back. I thought they were going to start using more packaging tape, but I guess that was temporary.

That has to be really though in 9.8. Otherwise bin price seems to be like 10-20$. That cover is used in NES videogame.

The videogame art is a copy/swipe of this though, I think. Or else the same pencils but different inks? (I don't remember exactly, but this discussion popped up somewhere else at some point, maybe in the cover swipes thread?).

I think it's just that it's a popular Jim Lee cover, along with it being a 9.8 Newsstand, in a period when Newsstands were on the decline.

Yeah, I dunno - they have a CGC Marketing Manager and CGC Graphic Designer, and allude to a "Marketing Team" in this article. I do know that if you only have one person handling all the different marketing and graphic support materials, and then you throw a branding project at them that requires some in-depth studying, research and development time - corners are going to be cut somewhere. One person can do the work, but the quality goes down exponentially because there is zero time left for critical thinking about each project - you basically have to just shoot from the hip, design something and move on to the next project. If that's the case, I feel for them - I have had friends who worked in corporate art departments, and their laments are all the same: too much work, not enough time for development of the message.

But, if they hired an outside firm like you were suggesting - I don't know what to think about that. Those should have more cohesiveness. It's not unheard of for a brand to develop individual identities for different services, but those companies generally have a subtextual style to tie them together.

I work for a small design studio, and we have some clients that are large corporations with an in-house marketing department, but they don't handle all of their artwork needs in-house. They do some, but I think the nature of the work is that you get periods where there is a lot of creative needs, and periods where there's very little. And companies don't like to pay for people to sit around when there is very little. So they deal with outside studios on a project basis.

I don't think corporations take advantage of "boutique" designers - they have an in-house department that handles this stuff, but I've always felt the problem with in-house design is that they are so close to their own product, it's hard to step back and view their brand from a different perspective.

I would really love it for Jay Z to answer "Who did your branding?" with:

    "Some dude named Dr. Balls."

I doubt they have enough design needs to have an in-house team. They probably work with a design studio that has CGC as one of a number of clients.

No consistency among the primary name logo. If you're going to break away from house branding, focus on some consistency, hierarchy and visual importance to the main company mark, especially when you're doing individually designed sub brands. Some logos have small CGC, some have large. Some logos are centered. Some are force justified. Some are right justified. Some have keylines. Some are reversed. Everyone of them have different x-heights and there isn't a single stylistic element to tie any of them together either through size or appearance. There's a lot going on in this new effort, not sure if it's going to work out well for them in terms of branding.

Yup. Their design is all over the place.

I've been in that tiny failure rate group too often.  Which obviously makes me question how tiny it really is.

Yeah, it's been a while since I've had a shipment that hasn't included a slab that had to be sent back for ME. And that includes shipments that were already sent back for ME. I just sent 8 or so books back from a shipment of 14 ME books. Most of those 14 were from a single shipment of 25 that initially came back.

Assuming this book is by the same seller as the VF- ASM books, I'm guessing that the seller simply isn't aware of how much stains and/or staple rust brings down a book. Probably thinks that creasing is the main factor bringing down the grade (as the books look to be relatively crease-free). But yeah, still way over-graded.

    Alice Pilch AKA Angela

The guy whose real name is Al Simmons likes to say he's the real world basis for Spawn.  My guess is that Alice Pilch does the same thing (apologies if not).

Value is very, very low, unless I'm mistaken.  (Remember how Kramer on Seinfeld claimed to be the "real J. Peterman"?)

My guess is that she may have been a cosplayer/"booth babe" for the Spawn tour

    @ExNihilo

If you were the winner of his Ebay listing for that book.....which he then backed out of......you can now nominate him for the Probation List here on the forums if you wish.

For nomination purposes, as long as the deal in question was between two board members, it doesn't matter where the transaction (or failed transaction) took place.

Should it even matter, since the seller admitted what he did?
