  1. First of all: Secondly: Did you cut your own backing boards?? I’ve done that for a few books, but so often, the back covers are worth keeping visible. As my previous post above suggests, I’ve been playing with my Ballantines as well as later Bantams and so many of them have great back covers and wraparound art. I do, however, understand the collector’s first directive to protect the books, especially the minty ones.
  2. Let’s hope. It looks perfectly bad-azz in its current packaging.
  3. For the longest time, most of my paperbacks were randomly stored in the order I acquired them. I had the Dells and Pockets separate for years, and then I pulled out most of the Avons and Populars. Bantams were next, followed by Ace. Strangely enough, somehow Graphics were sort of self-segregating over the years… Well, recently I started to cull the Ballantines out, so I went through a box in storage that had mostly tall-format books, many of them sci-fi. When I’m done with the Ballantines, perhaps I’ll do Signets.
  4. Take, (if you are planning on reopening the thread)
  5. In that same box was a Vin Packer Gold Medal The Evil Friendship and the 50c Avon Queer Patterns. I’d trade them in a second for anything hard-boiled or noir, or early editions I don’t have from most of the big publishers.
  6. Is it safe to say Beebo Brinker is the new Black Wings Has My Angel?
  7. A classic cover by Jonas (13th printing!) and some sleaze with quite the cover blurb:
  8. A few more from that underwhelming box: A super glossy Penguin and a credited Ray Johnson
  9. I was going through a box of previously-unbagged books and, while most of them were underwhelming, I thought this one stood out: Painted by Stanley Borack
  10. Awesome bit of history! Who’s the little guy in the photo? Is it a certain paperback collector??
  11. I’m playing around with some books in storage today. Sadly, I can’t keep everything at home, so a lot of what I term my “second tier” stuff is off-site. After years of relying on my (failing) memory, I’ve taken to making a list of my books by publisher the last few years. This box of Pockets doesn’t really have many keys, but there are a lot of nice copies with many of them first printings. It’s always fun to revisit old friends!
  12. Are there still a ton of antique shops in town? It’s been years since I was through there, but for many years Walnut was a great little town for antiques. I was anchored by a wonderful mall at the end of town in the old granary.
  13. How often do the books come back from CGC with grades higher than MCS gave those same books? Would you say they varied more for certain grade ranges?
  14. That looks ridiculous slabbed. How unnecessarily bulky and unwieldy. Boy, what a pleasure it’ll be to go through our books in X number of years…
