Yeah, so he did the commit to buy, request new total thing. And when he thought the shipping wasn't changing, he abruptly bailed.

There was a time that you could use Buy-It-Now and pay at a later time. It gave you the opportunity to secure a few things, and then ask the seller for an adjusted invoice. Then ebay got paranoid that sales could be abandoned, and made everything Immediate Payment, whether the seller elected it or not. Another obstacle placed in the way of a seller by a company that has never made a sale in its history, completely ignorant of standard e-commerce practices.

I don't even care about immediate payment.  I've waited just about 28 days b4 canceling.  I'm in no hurry.  Illl wait til the last minute

You can't do it that way anymore, they changed it, made too much sense for eBay. Well, you can, but it's unpaid in your cart, allowing anyone else to buy it out from under you. The seller can't send a revised invoice because there is no purchase, no invoice to revise. This is all because eBay is afraid things will sit unpaid and they won't get their vig.

You can sometimes "commit to buy" multiple items and then request combined shipping. That is, IF the seller has enabled combined shipping. But like you said, it's applied after the fact. You're again at the seller's mercy for shipping.

These days, you have to go through hoops to combine things, if not already set up properly. Either you use the commit function, if available, or you message ahead to see if the seller will help you out, while hoping they don'tgetsold. Or buy them all and pray for an appropriate shipping refund.

Don't forget, eBay msgs go from latest to soonest, so it reads from bottom to top and the 2 screenshots r 2 separate messages

Oh no, he had it in the cart and sent the invoice request.  I was able to send the revised invoice.  I changed the shipping cost but wanted to contact him first about the free book offer and I was just waitin for his response on the book offer

I hear you.  I followed the events along and saw how it went splat.  Every extra step is a complication.  I'm just saying you probably need to find a way that gets the customer from A to Z with no detours.  It will make both of your lives easier.

Changing shipping patterns in the middle of building an order is not easy to do.  I guess the revised invoice is the best method, but some people will avoid it.

I used to have flat rate shipping, order as many as you want, same price for shipping.  And still people would message me for a combined invoice.  You can't win.

Hahaha, right.  I was just tryna offer the guy a free book.  I didn't want him getting the books then tellin me I ripped him off cause I didn't send him a free book because I didn't specifically say U pick the book u want.

Sorry, I'm confused.  You offered him a free book for 25 cents extra shipping and he ignored that and then you started shouting and called him an ahole?  Then he requested a combined invoice?  When he didn't reply to the free book why didn't you just send him his invoice?

No no no, he requested an invoice, I offered the free book, then he smarted off, then I clapped back with the a hole.  I was waiting for the reply b4 I sent the invoice.  How r u so out of order

If I'm browsing Ebay and find a book I want, I always ADD TO CART instead of BUY IT NOW, and request a combined invoice for everything before I pay.  If I purchase them individually, and ask the seller to adjust shipping after the fact it just seems too bloated.

Of course, when I request an invoice, I expect to receive an invoice.

    Makes sense

  7. Ebay purchase just arrived.  Looked it up.  was from 2022, I believe it said December.  I sent in somethin with a corner like this and it didn't come back a 98.  I'm afraid if I get it signed, scratch that, I'm positive if I get this signed it wouldn't get a 98.  How does something with a corner like this get pass QC? And notice the 2 little white spots on the top edge.  I mean really!

Now check out the corner on  catwoman 1.  And this one got a 9.6.  There's no comparison. I'd like to pick my grader please

I haven't done a multi-item listing like that.  It may be something that can't be done, but I would think there is a way.  You can check out possible solutions on your shipping preferences and rules here https://www.ebay.com/ship/prf

The Calculated Shipping section may be useful.

If you are charging 25 cents per extra comic, maybe stick with your flat rate amount and put the 25 cents on the price of the comic, selling for $1.25 instead of $1.  That way the comic and extra shipping get covered as they add each one.

U can set it to calculate the shipping if it's from several different adds and even within the same ad by setting it so it charges whatever u set for each book purchased, but not if u shipping for Books within the same ad for the same price.

If u set a number, such as .25 cent on the additional book it will add 25 cent for each book that's added.  I don't want to do that, I want to sell up to 4 books for the same shipping cost, then tac on the .25 cent.

No, it's .25 cent after the 4th book.  I'm trying to sweeten the pot by giving a free book.  There wasn't a problem at first.  The issue was to request the invoice just as I stated and that's what he did, that wasn't the problem.  The problem arose when i asked if he wanted a FREE BOOK, that's it.  That's all I did and when he said nay or yea I would send the updated invoice.  It wasn't rocket science

Why don't you just fix your shipping settings so the purchases combine properly?  Then you won't open the door to these situations.

People have no patience for sellers who make it difficult for them to purchase what they want.  They take their money

If I sell books in 1 listing for $1ea + $3.75 for shipping and they purchase 2 book the system will add $3.75 twice.  Unless the listings r separate I don't believe that can be done within the same ad.  This is why I include in my "REQUEST INVOICE FOR MULTIPLE PURCHASES".

Therfore anyone making a purchase from me knows the deal, because I stated it in my ad, so knowing this goin in, why the attitude ?

Your listings say that shipping is $3.75 for up to 4 books. You said you sold him "about" 4 books, although his message specifically states he had 4 in his cart. If you sold him 4 books, you should honor your listings and charge him $3.75. Why should he pay $15 shipping when your listings state the charge will be $3.75? Your listings also state "Request an invoice and I'll adjust shipping cost." All he did was ask for a combined invoice and you called him an a-hole? I just added someone to my list, but it wasn't jackal_relic-thomas-landschulz.

Perhaps you missed the point.  I was going to send the invoice, but as I stated, I asked him if he'd like an extra comic book first.  Please do and why you're at it why don't u give me ur user name so I can add u to my list

He certainly comes off like a pompous bag, but I would’ve given him a chance with a “hey, did you see my message about a free book?” before going scorched earth.  Small money overall, but good karma.

I figured even if he missed the 1st message there was no reason to come at me like that.  He pissed me off.  Happened before when a guy came at me like he believed I was a store owner or somethin.  This is how people talk when they believe they're speaking to a business. Sure I have a lot of comics, but I'm just a guy sellin my old books, so when they come of at me like that I pop right back at em

  13. Just blocked this Jack wagon.  See screenshots as proof of this unbelievable arrogant A.

Sold about 4 books to him. I charge $3.75 + .25 for each book after the 4th. Ebay added the shipping for each book, so he asked for a revised invoice.  I Sent him a message to advise him that I revised my ad to show I'm giving a free book under $2 for a book purchase of equal or lesser value so if he'd like he could get an extra book.  Check out his response SEE SCREENS.  Almost forgot

A bar I was involved with had a jewelry store as a neighbor.  About ten years ago, someone did a smash and grab of the stuff he had in his window. The owner said it was the first time it happened in his twenty plus years of business.  He restocked the window and it happened again a few weeks later.  This time, he thought he'd be clever and put all costume jewelry in the window, but that too got smashed in short order.  Now he puts out his display every day, and takes it in every night. It's a waste of a half hour a day of his time but it's the cost of doing business.

    So true

I will tell you. The older I get, the more I think bad things could happen to me. It comes with experience and paying attention to what happens to others.

Might be a little inconvient but if they wern’t sitting out they wouldn’t have gotton stolen.   (shrug)

    Just saying…

I don't know if there's anyone, who has a long history of collecting, that hasn't had collectables stolen from them at some point.  I wonder if there's any long time collector that hasn't had items stolen

  16. I had my comics, sport cards, hawthorn amazing Spider-Man locomotive set, stan Lee 3d super U set, amd Stan Lee signed action figures stolen after my florida home was robbed.  During covid wells fargo offered a plan to suspend payments and every 3 months I would get an email asking if I'd like an extension and I would say yes.  At the end I resumed payments.  In the meantime unbeknownst to me another wells fargo department winterized my home saying it was abandoned.  I went down to Florida to check on the house and found my garage door lock in the off position, so it could just be rolled up and all my collectibles gone.  I immediately,  went to ebay and found my Ama locomotive set, Stan Lee 3d u set, and signed Stan Lee action figure posted by someone who was about 2 towns over.  BTW I didn't live in Florida, just maintained the house after moving in 2013.  I called the police and opened a case.  The detective was able to recover my graded books (about 15) and 3 boxes of comics along with the items that were posted on ebay.  The Det told me that seller wasn't the person who robbed my house and just the person who paid 1300 for the the items.  The Det is still looking into it. Luckily i had most of my books with me in Maryland.  Hopefully they'll sell the stuff to an unsuspecting buyer and thw buyer will throw it on eBay, Craigslist, etc.  I had my Heroes for hope starring the x-men book, with about 17 sigs including Stan Lee, stolen while in possession of comic Sketch Lee, about 3 years ago. Still looking for it

Oh, that suks. Jeff is a great guy. I really hope he gets his books back.

Something else to consider. Why leave valuable books on the wall or in display cases when the store is closed?

I know it might be a little inconvient, but wouldn’t it be a little safer to pull at least the expensive ones, put them in a box and take home or lock up in a safe for the night?

I know I and many other dealers do that at multi day cons. Just makes it harder for some low ball scum to rip you off.

    We live in crappy times…

That's a lot to do every night and pull them all out every morning.  I believe he probably thought it wouldn't happen.  That location is on a V corner on a main road with apartments right next to it and people walking in and out all times of the night.  If I were gonna hit a place it wouldn't be one with so many eyes everywhere. That's chancy.  Only way that would work is a smash and grab situation and we all know about those.  No one every gets caught in smash and grab crimes.  It would still be nice to have pics or scans on their books.  I have pics of all my books.  I did however drop my harddrive, so now I have to retake pics of everything.  Paid $100 for a diagnosis and was told it was recoverable, but would cost about $1300.  I said screw u. And I dropped my camera a while back, so now it no longer works properly.

Congratulations.  Off and on I've been working on completing the run of this set since about 2015, more off than on, but im back on right now in September 2022.  I have 36 extra 98ish copies, some doubles, some need pressing, some possible manufacturers defects but maybe 96s.  Still need 11+ more for a complete 98 set, give or take several books in case the ones I have don't make the grade.

Also have 9 signature series books.  I have my work cut out.

As Neal Adams once explained to me, when he disagreed with where I window bagged a Detective 411 for him to sign at a convention, it's his signature being displayed and represented so he would prefer that the placement be where his artistic sensibilities directed, and not up to a plebe like me.

Understood, but i've seen many artists just throw their sig on books and just move onto the next book, not even caring where the placement of the signature is.  Neal Adams may have been the exception, but in my experience most don't seem to care.

  20. I don't understand why they can't just sign wherever the customer wants them to.  It's not a big ask.  They're gettin paid good money.  If there was a window bag, i would sign wherever they want.  I'm gettin paid, why not? And have a 20 different colors for people who want a specific color.  Keep extra golds and silvers.  I really don't see the issue.  How much extra time does it take to pick out the gold pen.  Or draw inside a window.  Less thinking.  No trying to figure out the best spot to sign, there's the spot right there.  What's the big deal?

just like most other things, it depends.

His sig on an old Timely Captain America CGC 9.8 lowers the value relative to a blue label.

You put his sig on a modern $4 comic with his picture on the front, if you get a 9.8 you would definitely raise the value by more than you paid for the book and the signing and the slabbing.

And there's a million books and grades in between, it depends on the rarity, the grade, the signature, the cover, the comic, the story, the potential buyers, the timing, the luck.  And sometimes you add value, but not enough to to cover the cost of the signing.

But just like anything else, if one's goal is to really make money, the more time they put into finding and analyzing data and trends, the more likely they are to turn a profit.

As for the original proposal, I don't think there's anyway HE would sell his collection while he was alive as 'part of a collection' unless he was really desperate or it was charity.  I do like the charity idea though.

Agreed, I do believe a comic book with Evans signature on it would would add value to a comic book MOVIE fan, but not so much to a comic BOOK fan.   Just like people paying top dollar for a stan lee signed book that he has nothing to do with other than being a marvel book.  2 modern marvel star wars books recently sold for 4k and 2k and some change.  One had may the force be with you on it
