  1. OK, I know you want the other stuff but because comics are my first love I gotta put up some more today.

Here are 3 "Cookvilles". I like this collection. Kind of like "Pauls". Was a large collection and well marked. Not recognized by CGC. I have maybe a dozen or so only. Maybe I like the "Pauls" so much because I was there when it was found and got in to pick up a lot of good ones. I got to see most of them and got the back story first hand from the buyer. I do like "Cookviles" too.

I like this one because it is one of only a few that has Leroy Mackie (the original purchaser's name) on it.

  2. And while I am doing Superman, here is the incredibly rare 1942 Superman sheet music. I was dragged to a doll show with my wife a few years ago. A lady had a pile of sheet music and I was bored so I looked in the pile where I found this. Needless to say, I jumped all over it. I have only seen one other since I got this.

I've never seen this either. Those doll shows have been lucrative for you!

Hey as a married man it was a win win. Made the little woman happy and went home with a score for myself... There's a lot of other ways to get good stuff than just HA auctions...

My wife is an antique dealer. Like most antique dealers, she considers my "collectibles" swill. But she often comes home from an estate sale with some pretty cool swill for me. A few months ago I came home to find about 30 nice Friction House comics on the dining room table that she picked up for me cheap. She's a keeper even if she doesn't appreciate the "cool stuff"!

  3. This one was probably already posted but I cannot remember seeing too many copies of this giant.

I believe this is the first copy I've ever seen.

    I've got one too...

Great to see another copy. In the last 20 years, I can't recall seeing too many of these.

Kinda funny. Until recently, I thought this was Shirley Temple on the cover.

  4. Whatever happened to that guy that used to advertise in the price guide for Superman stuff? Claimed to be the world's greatest Superman collector...

A couple guys come to mind. Gary Coddington had a massive collection of Superman stuff. He actually let me read his Action #1 as well as many other key issues. He died in his early 30's of kidney failure. The other guy that comes to mind is Danny Fuchs from New York. He also had a massive collection of every Superman item you could think of new or old. He is still around I believe but kind of slowed down (probably got everything)!

  5. Now, here's a question regarding the above.

Back in the pre-internet (and even with the nascent Convention scene) it was incredibly difficult to know WHAT was available unless one stumbled across it.

This was also before any sort of toy guide books, pin pack price guides were available.

With the Superman aeroplane (note correct spelling) toys, for example, did you know before obtaining any of them that there were three available?

The thing is, I knew of the existence of a Superman plane and a Superman tank - but thanks to your post I now know that there are "variants" if you will.

Was it just "word of mouth" that alerted you to the varieties available?

I ask because "back in the day" this sort of information was often tightly held by dealers and collectors - usually until their "needs" had been met.

Great question. It is something I have always been curious about as well, and I feel like I have been collecting for quite a while. Heck, I didn't know there were three planes until Bob's post. I do know there are two different size roll-over tanks. Had a chance to get a small one years ago, and saw a large one in someone's collection.

Back in the pre Internet days. I would find a lot of stuff at flea markets, garage sales, toy and comic shows. Although the internet did not exist I got a lot of mail order and auction catalogues. Hakes Americana was a very valuable resource. I also corresponded with a lot of collectors who for the most part were pretty willing to share their knowledge and collections. Ego has always and still does come into play. Collectors like to brag and I would just suck up the info. Early on, everything was unknown and new. A great time to be a collector!

  6. Yes, it's Sharon:) NIce to meet you, Corey!

I didn't want to overpost, but I'll past them here, maybe that will help.

I'm not fond of scanning, but I had some ironing to do, and given a choice, the scanning won, lol;)

Wow, thanks Sharon! I'd be happy to wear a wrinkled shirt to see those. I've never seen those two Banners outside of Gerber. The last Super Mystery is also a classic that is on my want list now!

  7. You know, these boards have given me a new appreciation of my collection. I have obviously spent years chasing down this stuff but spent very little time it seems just enjoying what I have. Going through my collection to share it with you has been fun. So busy doing this that I haven't felt the need as strong to aquire more. (Not that that will ever happen), I'm just taking the time to "smell the roses" and re-read a lot of comics and look through stuff I haven't looked at in ages. (Saving some money too). Hopefully, I'm putting a slightly different slant on just collection comic books.

  8. And while I am doing Superman, here is the incredibly rare 1942 Superman sheet music. I was dragged to a doll show with my wife a few years ago. 9. OK, the people have spoken. I guess no more comics just the "other stuff" from now on. How about this cool grouping of Superman tin toys? They were all made by Marx Toys in 1940. This is both of the tin wind-up tanks and two of the 3 Superman wind-up ariplanes. I have the read and blue planes but not the silver one. These are very cool when wound up Supes flys over the plane until it catches up then he does it again until he runs "out of juice"

  10. while we're looking at some comic media's

here's a few Weird Terror's and War Fury 1, this is probably the worst copy I won this on ebay with the seller saying it was a little brittle, I took a chance won it for like 20 bucks when I opened it up it literally split down the middle. I taped the cover and have never taken it out of the mylar since then!

Aw comon Hap. If you guys keep posting all my favorite books, I won't have anything else to show you guys exept crappy pinbacks and toys...

  11. Nice group fifties!

I'm probably in the minority here when I say that I'm not so fond of issue 3. Considering that it is just a blown up stat from War Fury 1. Actually Heck's covers on most of these Horrific covers tend to be on the more cartoony side for me. Issue 1 is the best cover IMHO. :shy:

Oh, blastphamy! I love that cover. I know, different strokes. I'm not generally a Ditko fan... I guess I just like the starkness of it and the green background. Just a huge dead guy's face. I can't imagine how much it stood out that month on the newstand. Since, you don't like it, got a better than vg copy you want to part with???

  12. Startling%2032_zpsbtn0a410.jpg

Hi Bill. Nice "Paul" haul! Being a Schomburg fan this of course is my favorite. Also like the TEC #58 and 135. Looks like your dillegence is paying off. Interesting to note that none of these Tecs were in Ed's pictures. I know a lot of them slipped through the cracks because they were all mixed up in different boxes. I was only seeing them in groups of 2 or 3 short boxes at a time all mixed up. I know Joe put many of what he that was best or key on the bay. But I don't remember seeing any of these. I know Jim and maybe 1 or 2 small buyers got into them as well. I'd love to know where these came from just to trace the lineage of the collection. I don't want to horn on your deal as I know you are still actively seeking them. Besides, our interests are pretty different anyway. If you want to tell me, you can PM me. If not, no hassle and I understand.

And, if you get bored with that Startling you know who would give it a good home...

  13. I thought I would celebrate my 1000th post by showing off a recently acquired mini-run of sweet sweet Shommies. I'm particularly crazy about the Wonder 15...it's a 9.0! (and my consolation prize for not getting that Startling 49....)

Wow, beautiful group of books! The colors are amazing. Hard to pick a favorite. I still need a #20 to have the whole run of Wonder. Lot's of great covers in the run!
