  1. Nice group fifties!

I'm probably in the minority here when I say that I'm not so fond of issue 3. Considering that it is just a blown up stat from War Fury 1. Actually Heck's covers on most of these Horrific covers tend to be on the more cartoony side for me. Issue 1 is the best cover IMHO. :shy:

Oh, blastphamy! I love that cover. I know, different strokes. I'm not generally a Ditko fan... I guess I just like the starkness of it and the green background. Just a huge dead guy's face. I can't imagine how much it stood out that month on the newstand. Since, you don't like it, got a better than vg copy you want to part with???

Hi Bill. Nice "Paul" haul! Being a Schomburg fan this of course is my favorite. Also like the TEC #58 and 135. Looks like your dillegence is paying off. Interesting to note that none of these Tecs were in Ed's pictures. I know a lot of them slipped through the cracks because they were all mixed up in different boxes. I was only seeing them in groups of 2 or 3 short boxes at a time all mixed up. I know Joe put many of what he that was best or key on the bay. But I don't remember seeing any of these. I know Jim and maybe 1 or 2 small buyers got into them as well. I'd love to know where these came from just to trace the lineage of the collection. I don't want to horn on your deal as I know you are still actively seeking them. Besides, our interests are pretty different anyway. If you want to tell me, you can PM me. If not, no hassle and I understand.

And, if you get bored with that Startling you know who would give it a good home...

  3. I thought I would celebrate my 1000th post by showing off a recently acquired mini-run of sweet sweet Shommies. I'm particularly crazy about the Wonder 15...it's a 9.0! (and my consolation prize for not getting that Startling 49....)

Wow, beautiful group of books! The colors are amazing. Hard to pick a favorite. I still need a #20 to have the whole run of Wonder. Lot's of great covers in the run!

  4. Here are a few Spirit items. His first newspaper intert appearance was in 1940. This stuff is from that era. This is all the GA Spirit (non-comic) stuff I know of. The buttons are pretty large for the era, about 1-1/2" in diameter. The mask is pretty rare as not many probably survived.

  5. "You'll shoot yer eye out" or even worse have some monsters do it for you. Todays offering is a real "eye opener" as it says on one of these. I love these "injury to the eye" books. I know the interiors have some good ones as well. True Crime #2 and the Thing #16 come to mind right away. Probably have a few more I overlooked but would love to see any you might have that I haven't posted.

This one is probably my favorite of the bunch. It would have had my dime in a heartbeat back when it came out. Great color and image!

  6. I feel like some of the digests don't get much love, but they are pretty scarce in my humble opinion.

Oh, They get the love and the big bucks when and if they are ever for sale. I have never owned either of those. (or seen either in person) I've got a few more digests in my girl art boxes I believe. I think I already posted my It Rhymes with Lust.

  7. Jay, the interiors aren't over the top gory but they are fairly grim and of course violent war stuff. Bob, The May 52 issue is #1. Dig into your war boxes and see if you have any of the others. Seems like about half the run is available out there in low grade, some of the others not so much. High grade is impossible. What drew me to them is the Stanmore/Gilmor connection because that's my best-loved PCH. But they are cool, and cheap. So even though hunting them down in nice shape is a real hunt, finding them nice is twice as good because they're so affordable.

I'll post some in my thread when I get to the War boxes. These are pretty good as is War Fury and some of the Farrell titles. I rarely find any in high grade but as you say, they are way affordable and fun to find.

  8. How about some Pre-Code war? 2 flame-thrower covers and 1 Bernard Bailey from the Battle Cry series. Incredibly hard to find this title in Fine or better. This series was published by Stanmore (aka Gilmore, Aragon etc, publishers of Mr Mystery, Weird Mysteries, WTOF, Weird Chills etc.)

You're not kidding. These books just did not hold up well. Is the May 1952 issue #1? I have the other one but have never seen #12. Now look what you've done, I'm going to have to go look in my war boxes...

  9. Supposedly the model's father was ashamed of her for doing it. Her name was published on these pages. I think somehow he got the publisher to tear out this page before distribution. (probably threat of a lawsuit because she might have been underage or had not signed a model release). Someone else here might be able to back this up. Kind of like why the bibliography page is missing from most copies of Seduction of the Innocent.
