Here is the best one of the three I've posted today. Here is a newsstand in Manchester, New Hampshire in September of 1937. The display has the pulps and mags and comics hung upside down on the rack. Again, if you click this LINK and download one of the HUGE .TIFF files, you'll get a stunningly detailed view of the MAGS...and COMIC BOOKS. You can download that file and then flip it 180 degrees and it really comes to life. I especially love this picture, as it is from VERY EARLY in the realm of comic book publishing. Here is a cropped view of the comics on display. EARLY New Adventure, More Fun, Detective and more. I'm always thrilled to discover these pictures.

Here is the BEST picture of an early newsstand featuring PULP MAGAZINES I've just about ever seen. AUGUST 1937 The cool part is that if you click HERE and download one of the .TIFF files availalbe on that page, you will see a remarkably HUGE and well detailed picture of all the mags.

A near mint first issue of Hustler is worth 150-200, for real.

I love quoting myself. I looked up a thread on WM5 and it turns out it was in 2007 that a 5.0 copy sold for a measly 502.00 and a 6.5 sold for $1005.00 I would think that both would come close to going for TWICE that now. Here is a link to that info if anybody is interested RIGHT HERE , which is worth checking out just to see that turkey Adamstranges' SWEET High Grade copy.

Two copies in the same auction session for Weird Mysteries 5 sold on Comic Link a couple years ago for ...like....800 and 1000...maybe a 6.0 and 6.5...foggy memory. I remember thinking that these prices were low for better than mid-grade copies. Anybody remember that ? I have trouble believing that a WM5 in VF went for 150.00, even 8 years ago. 8 years ago Ebay was in FULL SWING and PRE-CODE was just then reaching upper levels price-wise.

I've followed Pre-Code Horror for, I guess about 15 years. To me it's leveled off except for ANYTHING Fine or better and of course, those wonderful Classic Covers. I'd love to get a Weird Mysteries 4 and 5...in FINE or better.

Here is the only picture I could find of that cover (Spicy Mystery Stories May 1937) Apparently it has an EEL story. "Cavern of the Damned" (in Spicy Mystery Stories, May 1937) I'm not a Pulp Guy, so I know nothing about the Eel, but he does have a Wikipedia page RIGHT HERE.

I haven't been around here in a while. Jpexex1978 , you've been on an excellent hunt. Keep up the good work. Maybe BANGZOOM, you have a copy of the MAY 1937 Spicy Mystery Stories on the rack above ? (or any of the other covers ?) that would be cool to see.

What were your best years, what percentage from those years have things rebounded. I'm just curious. Are action figures still selling ? If not , what sells best for you, back issue comics ? Those copies are sweet. I remember when a stash of these high grade copies were uncovered in the early 90's. They were plentiful until they were all snapped up. Both copies were advertised in the CLASSIC PRE-INTERNET Metropolis Catalog for like $250 each...If I remember correctly. Wish I would have grabbed one then.

Regarding a copy of Shadow Volume 1 number 1 Here is the description from the lone copy that sold on Heritage in May of this year. This copy was a RESTORED Fair to Good and sold for $ 2629.00 Shadow V1#1 (Street & Smith, 1931) Condition: Apparent FR/GD. Harder to find than Action Comics #1 or Detective Comics #27, this pulp is as influential as either of those two famous comic books. This is the first copy we have ever offered of the first issue, and this is an item that even some of the elite collections lack! This issue, the very first "hero pulp," hit newsstands some seven years before Action #1 started the Golden Age of comics. A radio narrator called "The Shadow" had proven a hit, and Street and Smith assigned Walter Gibson (writing as Maxwell Grant) to take the name and flesh out a full-fledged character. Gibson's speed as a writer was a consideration, as the publisher was worried that someone else might use the name for a magazine. This is also the reason why the Shadow doesn't appear on the cover -- there wasn't time to do a new illustration, and an image already in stock was used (reportedly the only one available that had a shadow on it). This first issue quickly sold out, and of course this character in turn became the basis of a smash-hit radio program (and starred in other media as well). While the page edges are quite brittle, luckily this doesn't apply to the page interiors. Restoration includes: trimmed, covers re-glossed, covers glued to interior. We believe even the collector who would ordinarily pass over any pulp in this condition will make allowances given the extreme scarcity of this item! Bookery's Guide to Pulps GD value = $3,000.

WOW Dwight....that's awesome. Few questions that you may have answered elsewhere. What was your initial reason for collecting the Shadow Pulps ? When did you start your collection (how long ago) and with what issue(s) ? What was your proudest moment during the acquisition of your run ? Any spectacular deals or finds during the process ? At what point did you commit to putting the whole run together in high grade ? Have you ever seen a copy of # 1 ? I imagine you may have ran into a ratty or coverless copy but not one that would fit your higher grade mentality ? Anyway....would love to hear your answers from and obsessed collectors point of view.....
