  1. That would be considered a "Printing/Bindery Defect". I do not know CGC's stance on a "Missing Staple", they have been more lenient on Marvel Chipping lately (which is also a printing/bindery defect) and not really deducting from the actual grade so it may depend on what book it is and the books actual condition without the missing staple. All things being equal printing/bindery defects are allowed all the way up to MT 9.9 however the terminology changes as to the defect allowed with each grade so where does a missing staple fall in??? The wording leaves a lot open to individual interpretation. 9.9 MINT (MT): Back to TopOnly subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed. 9.2 NEAR MINT- (NM-): Back to TopA limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. There is no mention of printing/bindery defects on books graded VG 4.0 or lower.
  2. The pictures are a bit "grainy" but from what I can see the book presents as a FN/VF 7.0, however... With the cover being detached at one staple and that staple being rusty IMO it will drop the book "at least" two grades to a VG+ 4.5 or VG/FN 5.0. If I were cataloging this book into my collection it would be noted that way... VG+ 4.5 (Would be a FN/VF 7.0 except for rusted staple and lower detached cover) 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top...and may be loose but not completely detached... 3.0 GOOD/VERY GOOD (GD/VG): ...and may be loose or even detached at one staple...
  3. FN+ 6.5 IMO the book is better than a FN 6.0 but the stress lines just won't allow me to go higher than 6.5.
  4. This is CGC's stance on tape repair... https://www.cgccomics.com/news/article/3327/CGC-Modifies-Stance-on-Grading-Submissions-with-Tape/
  5. I do not use CGC, my books are all raw, however... #1 - Grading is Totally Subjective... One see's what they want to see when looking at/grading books which makes it very difficult to be honest when grading your own books, you do not always see or accept what is really there. #2 - You did not show full pics front and back of the book. For the book to receive such a low grade there must be something missing, that you did not see in the Grader Notes or did not notice in the book itself. A GD 2.0 can have a completely detached cover and rusted staples however an accumulation of major defects such as "Brittle Pages" Pieces Missing, etc will all lead to a lower grade. You stated the pages were "Yellow", are the pages Brittle and falling apart at the touch?, that to me brings a lower grade book to a PR 0.5. Here are the guidelines for PR 0.5, what defects does your book have that you have not disclosed? 0.5 POOR (PR): Sufficiently degraded to the point where there is little or no collector value; easily identified by a complete absence of eye appeal. Brittle almost to the point of turning to dust with a touch, and usually incomplete. Extreme fading may render the cover almost indiscernible. May have extremely severe stains, mildew or heavy cover abrasion to the point that some cover inks are indistinct/absent. Covers may be detached with large chunks missing. Can have extremely ragged edges and extensive creasing. Corners are rounded or virtually absent. Covers may have been defaced with paints, varnishes, glues, oil, indelible markers or dyes, and may have suffered heavy water damage. Can also have extensive amateur repairs such as laminated covers. Extreme spine roll present; can have extremely ragged spines or a complete, book-length split. Staples can be missing or show extreme rust and discoloration. Extensive staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as extreme rust migration. Paper exhibits moderate to severe brittleness (where the comic book literally falls apart when examined). Extreme acidic odor may be present. Extensive interior tears. Multiple pages, including the centerfold, may be missing that affect readability. Coupons may be cut.
  6. Just thought I would throw this out there. If you are happy with the service you receive at your LCS and want to stay with and support a local business... Long before the internet some LCS's used to offer a "Search Service". You filled out a card with the title, issue number, grade/price range and they reached out through their network to find you the book and when they found it they contacted you, my experience with this was very good, it usually happened much quicker (days to a couple of weeks) than putting books on a "want list" online. I had friends/family that used this service to get me the books on my Christmas list, I would just tell them what LCS's to visit. It has been 25 years since I have had an LCS find a book for me so I do not even know if any still do that with online buying making everything available and right at your fingertips. (Note: This was also in the days when comic cons were actually about the comics. ) Hope you get the books you are looking for!!!
  7. What does your Overstreet Price Guide show for these two issues? From the 2015/2016 Overstreet Price Guide... Detective Comics #96 February 1945 Batman #214 August 1969 Synopsis from MyComicShop.com for Batman #214 First 15-cent cover price. Alfred given a new last name, Pennyworth, in "Batman's Marriage Trap!" --script by Frank Robbins, pencils by Irv Novick, inks by Joe Giella. Letter to the editor from comics historian Peter Sanderson Jr. Novick cover? Cover price $0.15.
  8. IMO the book is a VG 4.0 as is. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple
  9. That book IMO is not a FR 1.0. Yes it is a worn "well Loved" copy but there are no pieces missing, no major spine splits and tape does not affect any grade GD 2.0 and lower so IMO this book should get at least a FR/GD 1.5 which "theoretically" is valued at 3/4 of the GD 2.0 price. Personally I have absolutely no issue with tape and well Loved reader copies, have many myself and have taped many myself. (Yes I know that last statement made many of you cringe, however, scotch tape WILL NOT and CANNOT make a VERY LOW Grade book that is already falling apart any worse, it can only help to keep it together and IF it does make it worse it will not be in my lifetime and probably not in my children's lifetime, thats my story and I am sticking to it!!!) What would CGC grade at... CGC's stance is that tape cannot be used to make a repair and grades the book with the defects as if the tape were not present. What kind of price the book would bring at auction with the tape, all depends on the demand at the time. I cannot be the only collector looking for affordable, well Loved copies of Key Books. On eBay there were two CGC PR 0.5 X-Men #1's that sold for $1350.00 (67 Bids/17 Bidders) and $1775.00 (58 bids/22 Bidders) respectively. Then there is this Raw X-Men 1 that is in worse shape than your book that sold for $1281.00 (45 Bids/14 Bidders)
  10. F.F. 49 For The Win!!! IMO the Trilogy is one of the best storylines ever introducing two characters that became mainstay's in the Marvel Universe. On the other hand... The start of several hero's receiving their own title (Silver Surfer, Captain America, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Sub-Mariner) is one of the events that signified the beginning of the end of the Silver Age for me. (Along with 12 cents to 15 cent cover price and the end of the decade)
  11. Would have been one of these that were purchased new from the local pharmacy/supermarket/7-11, do not remember exactly which one was first but these books have always stood out in my mind along with ASM 21, D.D 7 and 8 and F.F 35.
  12. Dag Nab It!!! This is why I am not supposed to go out alone, I went and wondered off and got myself lost again. Hello...Does anybody know I am missing???
  13. Hobby... Most/All of my books were purchased before the movies even started and although these books have gone up in value over the last 40 years that is not why I collect. The only reason I look into value and consider value is for insurance purposes and so my kids (42 and 39) will have some general info after I am gone, my Daughter says she is going to sell, sell, sell. And since you got me started... I do not even care for the movies, I watch the movie's with my Son/Grandkids and my Son will say something like... "what book did that happen in?" and then I go into an old man rant telling my Grandkids that it did not happen that way in real life (which is the comic book) and then I spit out an issue number where that event took place, tell them how it "really" happened and then tell them "Hollywood" changed it/modernized it for the young kids so they can make money.
  14. So just like an earlier thread about how much "Marvel Chipping" would detract from the grade and that book received a FN 6.0 with no reduction for the chipping it seems that CGC is starting to accept things like Marvel Chipping as a Printer/Bindery Defect and Subscription Creases as Normal (They already accepted "Written and Stamped Arrival Dates") for books from the 60's and grading accordingly. Although I do not have my books graded by CGC it makes me happy to see they are coming around on what was normal for the period and has nothing to do with "normal" wear and tear.
  15. IMO it is a GD/VG 3.0 due to the tape. The grading standards state that a book in GD/VG 3.0 is allowed a "book length crease" so a subscription crease does not affect books in this grade. How much would a subscription crease detract from a higher grade book would all depend on the overall condition of that book. As far as I am concerned... I personally have no problem with a book with a subscription crease, it is the way things were done back then. (folded in half and placed in a plain brown folder), I actually had subscriptions back in the 60's. It is part of the history of the book,IMO it gives the book personality, to me it is no different than a book with an "arrival date" or "distributor ink".
  16. It all depends on the overall grading of the book... As already stated pics would help. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. I graded this book at a FR/GD 1.5.
  17. Welcome To The Boards!!! Sounds more like an "Arrival Date" than just doodling. Arrival Date - The date written or stamped on the cover of comics by either the local wholesaler or the retailer. The date precedes the cover date by approximately 15 to 75 days and may vary considerably from one locale to another, or from one year to another. Here is an example of a written arrival date. As far as a grade, IMO... 3.0 GOOD/VERY GOOD (GD/VG): A used comic book showing some substantial wear. Cover shows significant wear, and may be loose or even detached at one staple. Cover reflectivity is very low. Can have a book-length crease and/or dimples. Corners may be blunted or even rounded. Discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor to moderate soiling is allowed. A triangle from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable. Tape and other amateur repair may be present. Moderate spine roll likely. May have a spine split of anywhere from 1" to 1-1/2". Staples may be rusted or replaced. Minor to moderate staple tears and moderate stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present.
  18. I have probably posted this already but it is worth posting again. Rom was a new series that I started reading/buying when I got back into comics in 79, something about the first cover I saw drew me in and the never ending continuous storyline with appearances by virtually the entire Marvel Universe kept me there month after month. If I were ever going to pull books out to read again ROM would be it.
  19. Really hard to tell with the book being in the plastic sleeve but from what I could see I "was" leaning towards a VG+ 4.5 but due to the "long crease" I will have to go with a... VG- 3.5 3.5 VERY GOOD- (VG-): Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.
  20. I feel the same...VG 4.0 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): The average used comic book. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  21. I am somewhat confused by the question... Buy back issues Cheaper than What???
