  1. It's confusing, but there are two different CoC #23s from Harvey. All the GPA data you cite is for the 1951 #23 which is not the classic one. The 1954 #23 is the 'Heartline' cover. I tried all last year to find a decent low-to-midgrade copy, and was never able to. At the time I actually found it a bit tougher than the #19. Just not enough copies to go around. NOW it makes sense. The competing issue numbers didn't even occur to me. Personally, I'm happy to see this cover getting some love finally. I've loved this one for years, and have been lucky enough to have owned probably 8 copies in varying grades (and somehow lost one copy in 2015...) I'd like to upgrade, but also content with my 2 copies.
  2. Seriously heavy bids up front! I was hoping to upgrade my Beth copy with this one, but it's increasingly looking grim. It will also be interesting to see if this creates any spillover interest for the 3.0 copy that ends at Comiclink in 3 days. Heritage had a second copy, an off-brand slab at 7.5, but that is no longer on site. This might be CoC 23's year! Lots of Golden age horror books have been seriously ramping up in value. Great if you have a copy for sale, but somewhat off-putting as a buyer because I do not have an explanation for the increase. Will it be sustained? Consider this data from GPA on the Chamber of Chills 23: ( 9.0 ) File Copy - (1) $600 (1) $600 - $600 Apr-2016 $600 for a CGC 9.0 only 9 months ago to now "suddenly" have a CGC 8.5 at $1900 (+19%) = $2260 which is approaching 4X the value? The CGC 7.0 that sold in Dec 2016 ( only a few weeks ago ) looks like a bargain: ( 7.0 ) (1) $250 (1) $250 (1) $250 (1) $250 $250 Dec-2016 The issue with those GPA results: Where were they sold? I actively search for this book. I haven't seen a 9.0 up for sale recently, and I would have gladly paid 3 times the price that the 9.0 sold for last year. The 7.0 price was also a joke. These prices are so low I almost have to assume they were private sales (and need based rather than trying to get the best price). I was posting monthly all last year in WTB for this book and had no takers.

  4. Great books! I'm a big fan of Marie, and 88 is tough in grade. It is my favorite of the run too:
  5. Purple does tend to a make a great image "pop" a little more.
  6. My goals are simple this year: Craig EC splash or end page (with VK) Wrightson peak Warren page Kaluta Shadow page Chaykin Star Wars page and either of my Weird War Tales cover grails if they happen to come up for sale. (The same holds true for the Ingels end page that got away from me twice (!) when the universe cruelly conspired against me, ). Of course, the issue is finding these beauties, but that's the thrill of the hunt.
  7. Agreed! Ajax/Farrell had a talent for artwork in both the covers and stories that could creep you out! Absolutely agree-it's almost like the lack of "polish" made the art more creepy: weird perspectives, odd looking people, monsters and corpses (sometimes looking different from panel to panel); they really succeeded in creating unease.
  8. I never get tired of seeing copies of this awesome book!
  9. He also did Saddle Justice 5-8 and Gunfighter 7-12 covers.
  10. I'm here representing a dual minority: I'm a Misfits fan and a PCH fan and I don't get the cover at all. Just on Harvey PCH merits alone, it's not even in my Top 5. Those, for reference, are: 1. Chamber of Chills 23 2. Black Cat 50 3. Tomb of Terror 16 (that's right-16!) 4. Tomb of Terror 15 5. Witches Tales 25 If we are talking about overall PCH, it isn't even in my Top 20. Not trying to disparage the book, but I just don't see it.
  11. Great point, Mick. I was thinking the same thing. Drucker having never done another cover before or since makes me have strong doubts he did a "one-off" here. Also, Kanigher was too much of a control freak to give Drucker a cover shot (especially since he had even done comparatively few interiors at this point), especially when he had his proven workhorses that could do it faster and better. Not to disparage Drucker (I love his Mlle Marie, of course), but Grandenetti, Kubert and Novick were as good as it gets and lightening fast.
  12. So, this was shared on Facebook-I'll reserve my comments until after y'all have had a chance to read it. Definitely interesting..... The 16 Best War Comics
  13. New titles in 2017?!? Has that been announced yet? I'd love to see it. I'm also curious what Frank Miller meant when we said he was going to do a WWII project for DC. if they do launch a new Rock title, I'm betting they will time it with his appearance on Legends of Tomorrow, which they have been teasing for over a year now.
  14. Wouldn't make any difference, since they'd quote a different price to the next person inquiring. Or sometimes even to the same person inquiring.
  15. Sweet book, and at the top of my 2017 PCH list.
  16. Thanks for posting this one and the earlier batch, Mick. It's awesome seeing these high grade beauties!
  17. Awesome copy of a very cool key-congrats!
  18. Great book! I love seeing high grade Farrells.
  19. Congrats on picking up that one up-definitely one of the scarcer PCH books out there.
  20. I'm not Charlie (or Charlie's not me?). That sig has been a dilemma for me since I bought the cover in 2004. Part of me wants to restore/remove it, but...its Evans, ya know? I had the same problem with a Kubert Skull Mountain OFF cover and eventually sold it rather than decide, !
  21. Truly awesome cover! Thanks for sharing it.
  22. I wish I had the original for that one-it's a great splash! These are a few of my faves of the ones I do have: This issue started Death's run as the book's host. Up until this issue he had been seen as just a head or body panel inset within each story. This intro shows an R2D2 lookalike taking out a tank: Death in full Grim Reaper mode: Joe Kubert's art for the letter column header:
