  1. My opinion: the term "classic" gets thrown around WAY too much when it comes to GA books. They can't ALL be classics, just based on age and nostalgia. If all of them are classic, then none of them are. The term becomes diluted when it is so liberally applied. ALL Joker covers aren't classic (but Batman 11-amazing!). ALL Lou Fine covers aren't classic (but Hit 5, Fantastic 3 and National 7-perfection!). Even CGC seems to be inconsistent with when they do and do not put "classic cover" on the label, even on different copies of the same book.
  2. Major kudos to Mick- This was the 20th anniversary of my first war dinner, and I had a blast as always. It was great seeing old friends and making new friends as well (and putting faces and names to familiar board handles!). Because of these dinners, I have had the opportunity to meet Kubert, Haney, Estrada, of course Russ!, Novick, Glanzman, and numerous other creators whose work I greatly admire, as well as having conversations with Grandenetti and Esposito by phone. This is all due to Mick's tireless work behind the scenes to contact, fund, and coordinate the logistics involved in such a big task, year after year. Thanks again, Mick, you are one in a million!
  3. I NEVER understood the hype and price of this one-not when it first started heating up, nor any more so to this day
  4. One of my favorites as well! Awesome copy of a great cover! But then, I haven't found any Everett PCH cover that wasn't fantastic.
  5. I was glad I scored this one today and it is currently heading my way. Only 3 in the census, and Heritage has only sold 2 copies, one poor and one good. Plus, it's one of my favorite Russ Heath horror covers! Dan R.
  6. I have to say, one thing that I love about this thread and the Undead Thread, is that it is leading me to a greater appreciation of books that I've overlooked, like this one. The downside is that my "must have" list for the year has tripled, even though I've found and bought more books this year than in the previous decade! Great book Jimbo!
  7. Seriously, you two, I'm enjoying this thread like crazy! Seeing entire runs of these titles photographed together is beyond cool. And the latest photos? Farrells are scarce as hen's teeth in decent shape, and some issues of Beware are near impossible to find these days. Stunning groups of books-congrats to you both on the achievement.
  8. 'Splain, please. I think that was a piggyback ( ) on the "dueling banjos" reference from Deliverance.
  9. Great book, and a really nice copy! This one is my favorite of the short Jumbo horror run.
  10. Here's my copy. IMHO rarest Ditko cover, could be rarest PCH, at least Top 10. I passed on one in 2005, and when I got back into comics just over a year ago this was at the top of my list and I only found this one recently.
  11. Congrats Gino-that is a sweet book! The colors on the cover are a lot stronger that on other copies I've seen in higher grades. It's sharper than usual for an MLJ cover too. Great acquisition.
  12. I was pretty happy to get this in the mail today. It's the final page to "All, or Nothing At All" from Mister Mystery 14. That last panel is just......
  13. So this is maybe slightly OT, but I've gone thru original art channels and have had no luck. I'm hoping some boardies can help me with a list I'm compiling of PCH cover original art that is known to exist. I'm having trouble confirming what Harvey covers are still out there. A huge trove of Harvey art surfaced in the early 2000's, but I have been unable to find which covers were present. Most of the "keys" have never been offered for public sale (WT 25, CoC 23, ToT 15, Black Cat 50). Any assistance with this project would be greatly appreciated.
  14. Love that Ghost #7---the heads that border the center image are pretty gruesome!
  15. That's a sweet grouping RM. My faves in that run have long been 23 and 24 (the 2nd ones). So many more are classic tho: 7, 13, and 21 are close on their heels!
  16. Very nice first pick. This is a book that I've long felt is underappreciated, probably because it tends to get overshadowed by #15. I think it's great, pure horror. Your copy is a nice one too!
  17. If you separate the ages into Golden and Atomic, then there's no question about it: superheroes define the Golden Age. It was only the decline in superheroes post-WW2 and the experimentation to repeat their success that led to the diversification of the Atomic Age. Horror and sci-fi elements were present even in the Golden Age. War was incorporated into the superhero tales as well, and only after the cancellation of a lot of caped titles do you see Atlas and EC war titles that have the genre stand by itself. There are outliers, of course, like Dell's War Comics/Stories, and the horror adaptations in Classics Illustrated and a few one-off horror issues. Even the "genre" titles that were successful in the GA were essentially superhero tales, with the hero wearing a loincloth or spacesuit instead of a cape.
  18. GREAT cover! Congrats on picking it up.
  19. I've always preferred 23. I realize 17 was considered "classic" first but who made that call? Really it's been classic for so long it could have been due to Bob O waking up one morning, working on the OPG, saying, "yep, classic". And boom! Blessed into fanboy sainthood.
  20. Congrats on joining the Adventure 37 club. That is hands down the best issue of the run. I'm still hoping to someday pickup a copy of Double Action 2 to go along with my copy....a man's gotta dream, right? It was my dream as well. Fortunately, I was able to pursue that dream decades ago when the books were affordable. I need a bib when I look at that book....thanks for the share-truly awesome!

  22. 3 days since the last post on this thread?!? Gentlemen, that just won't do. Here's one that is on its way to me. It was on my list of "best last" issues of horror titles:
  23. I've never seen this one-any details? Who published it and when? GREAT find! Thanks! It was published by the National Research Bureau of Chicago, which also published America Under Socialism. No date on it. Can't find any other information about it - unlisted in Guide. Never even knew this existed until I saw it. The guy I got it from got it 25 years ago from the CEO of a public utility. Maybe it was sent out as a sample for solicitation and never widely distributed? That is beyond cool. I thought I knew all of the A-bomb comics but this is one I haven't seen in 20+ years of actively looking for them. This is an amazing discovery.
