  1. Brittle but beautiful. And let's face it, I'm no contender for the Berk copy. I actually first laid eyes on this book the night of the Berk event, as I was kindly offered a quick peek at the Metropolis back offices, and saw this tucked in among their stacks. It called out to me then, and was eventually lucky to bring it home.
  2. Impressive bookends, Gentlemen! Mine can be slid somewhere in between your copies on the bookshelf. Until I find a 7.5 upgrade that is!
  3. Something tells me he's not exactly thinking about the marriage thing at this point in the story, sporting those inviting leather-bucket seats...
  4. Nice book! I'm trying to think of a mash-up between Bugs and PCH, but it all ends badly!
  5. Funny, those Japanese characters on the front of the plane translate as, "Junkdrawer sensei, you must sell your 9.0 to Zolnerowich!"
  6. Good thing, they all taste like p---water! Actually, I'll drink those. Gator, I'll pay you $2 per price point!
  7. He shoots he scores!! A fabulous 3-some there, Gino! Loving the monkey spiders in #18.
  8. OK, the thing that makes this particular copy so important is that the evidence of the crime IS RIGHT ON THE COVER! You see, the attempted assault took place in January at 2 A.M. !! Where's a gumshoe when you need one?
  9. Agreed. While 54 is more archetypal GGA, that 53 has a lurid, menacing, stylized noir-ish feel to it, straight from the pulps, more unique in my opinion. Great pair of Kamen covers, Rick!
  10. Funny, Detective 69 was my second-ever GA purchase, and I'd be reluctant to sell it. But other than The Batman and the Joker, what drew me into the GA was Jack Cole's Plastic Man. So in line with the nostalgia theme some other boardies have riffed on in this thread, here is a book might not be my rarest book, or my most valuable book, or my most eye-catching book, but one that was an early GA milestone in my collection, and selling this "vital book" would mark an act of abject desperation:
  11. Sagii, sounds like you need to see a doctor. Once those Dollmans start growing, they really should be removed, or else you may develop Qualitycomicalgia.
  12. But I already did! Spent it all on my near mint run of Gabby Hayes!
  13. Berk Effect. A rare meteorological event that comes once in a lifetime and overwhelms everything in its recent past and recent future.
  14. Point Five, here's a great idea: write Gino's name on your copy and then sell it to him!
  15. +14,500 (underbidder's max bid)
  16. Nice Four Favorites, Sir! How about some snapshots of those malevolent villains that only Ace could dream up?
  17. Colors on the #45 are superb! (Have no fear, the pond is really more like a wading pool, without the toddlers.)
  18. Very awesome! Actually, based on the expression on her face, I think she is more than able to take care of herself!
  19. Fascinating thread, and a lot of great perspectives. Obviously there's no single right answer, and depends on individual preference, budget, level of OCD, etc. I guess the question at hand is whether you really just want the book, or really want the book in high grade? If the latter, then the decision is pretty clear. And if it's meant to be an "investment" book, then the decision is more clear. Or, if you're the type of person who knows you'll just start resenting that lower-grade book every time you see a higher-grade version, then again, go for the high grade book. I'm more in the camp of two books is better than one, since I'm not so smitten by high grade (and can't afford it!), and prefer having more books I love looking at, and reading too, if I can only figure out how to deslab from the new holders... A lot of it also comes down to scarcity. If this high-grade book you have in mind comes around maybe once every few years, then as Janis says: "Get it while you can, yeah!"
  20. Interesting Catman, I haven't read much about Kane's art "connections" to the Flash Gordon and big little books. Do you know of any representative images? Yes, it's always fun to "discover" these things in one's serendipitous meanderings through the interior pages of the GA. A little bit history, a little bit archeology (Sqeggs, I know you want to add, "and a little bit rock and roll" -- so I'll do it for ya!)
  21. I posted this a few days ago in the Pre-Robin Tec Club thread, figuring they'd find the cross-fertilization of Bob Kane an interesting thing. Apparently not -- maybe it ruined the moonlight glow of a certain book. Anyhow, maybe the Fiction House thread is a more natural place for this tidbit -- I was perusing Comic Book Plus, looking at Jumbo Comics #1, cover date of September 1938. Here is page 1 of Peter Pupp, by Bob Kane. Check out panel #7. Remind you of anything? I suppose self-swiping isn't such a fault... If the answer isn't obvious, the spoiler can be found below. Apologies if this has been discussed a 1,000 times before.
  22. Never noticed that one before. Very impressive. Great composition, along the diagonal from her right hand to left foot. And her leg seems to go on forever. And in a rare twist of fate, it's the girl rescuing the guy, who's about to be spun into mincemeat. To summarize: I like it!!
