  1. Oh there are never real bargains anymore are there. Every time I think I am the only person to find some lot from some English country auction....NOPE.
  2. Suddenly the Jeff Jones Monster Times page jumped to over 8k, so much for my meager thoughts of keeping it together.
  3. I am curious if anyone has ever looked into whether there is even a weak correlation between the final hammer price and the final proxy price before it goes live. I assume there is some correlation there.
  4. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/J-R-R-Tolkien-The-Hobbit-Original-Cover-Concept-Art-By-Barbara-Remington-/231454210148?hash=item35e3bef864:g:t2kAAOSw44BYXENL Seems relevant to the above...
  5. I believe the Jaguar God prelim was even smaller, 3X4 as I recall. When things are this small every inch counts I still thought it was awesome. Comicconnect has a prelim up (for awhile now) with a BIN of 5900, not one of the key paintings but still...Any guesses on what the DD5 prelim would bring?
  6. Jaguar God now up as well. I'd take this one over the other two any day, but likely am in the minority. The miniscule color prelim for this sold for just under 11k at Heritage this year. Couldn't believe it went that high.
  7. One more, note the seams on the OA line up with the edge of the covers as the artwork does not wrap around the spine (which is plain white).
  8. Yes colors are pretty worthless. Honestly, I am holding the original slipcase in my hand and this thing is identical in detail right down to the location of the three signatures. I think this is what was used on the covers, to be honest. I don't know why they called it a cover study though. This is roughly 2x the production size as well, but I don't know that much about collecting OA. I never thought this was a prelim. Actually I can see the parting lines on the original slipcase. They line up perfectly with this art.
  9. I never thought this was the prelim. Is use of the term "cover study" what suggests this isn't the final version? it sure looks final to me.
  10. Correction Fluid on pre-1956 art According to Google correction fluid was invented in 1956. I was curious if people just used white paint before this as I was looking at OA from the 40s with what appears to be white-out in use. This is a piece that I cannot imagine anyone faking (low value). Curious what people had to say about this. Thanks
  11. I am glad I forgot about that Remington piece. As a big LOTR fan/collector I may have thrown in a bid in at the last minute (and ruined my bankroll), even though I am not a a huge fan of the piece. Someone took a nice loss on that one. I really liked that William Bloom cholera piece (seems so cheap) and several of the Safari mag covers by Beecham.
  12. I heard the rights coming along with the pieces isn't helping the affordability. How does one value the rights to the death dealer, for example? Not that I could afford a DD oil anyway, but if I could I wouldn't want to be burdened with the licensing rights. That's like paying to have to go to work in a way.
  13. Its amazing to me how little market there is for the older gaming minis. The art on these is great. I started buying sealed sets earlier in the year and you can get some beautiful pieces for next to nothing. I love the Dungeon Dwellers artwork. Heritage and Ral Partha really hit the nostalgia sweet spot for me.
  14. Which family member is selling these? The google caching of the various museum websites really complicates things.
  15. Man, great stuff. I loved me some WH back in the 90s when I couldn't afford much. This was at Woodbridge Mall in NJ, forget the name of the shop. Now I am older, established and still can't afford much When did they go from pricing by the material to pricing by what the damn character does. Its like, a single figure of a random grunt is X, but a single figure of some legendary hero with massive HP and powers (same amount of material and from what I can tell R&D) is 4x.
  16. One thing I have been curious about is the recourse you have for buying OA (or anything really) from places like Heritage or CLink. Everyone knows both sides of the horror stories on eBay, but as a buyer you basically have a lot of power to redress issues. What about Heritage? If you get a piece that is damaged in shipping is there a return policy? What if a piece wasn't described correctly (has a paste up panel, undisclosed damage, etc.). Thanks, Chris
  17. Wow, not even close really. I too have my story to share about a purchase gone wrong and a switcheroo. In terms of the signature, even real signatures are not worth that much because these portfolios can be had for sometimes around 100-150 dollars, depending on the set. I also assumed those were real sigs.
  18. So what is the deal with piece selling at HA and then appearing at the next CLink auction. Specific example here is the Carnevale Conan cover (which has updated issue # as well). Are these shilled, buyer's remorse, flips??
  19. Incredibly common in my experience as well. I have tried different techniques to unstick a painted background with no luck. You can see the effects on the Van Eaton Gallery page as well.
  20. Don't suppose you have any Rankin Bass Hobbit or Return of the King?? I find shipping the art is pretty easy. As we get into hotter months there may be some more concerns with a hand painted background sticking to the back of the acetate.
  21. Sold for 2550 back in 2011. I like the non silver pen used here.
  22. I am watching over 100 lots from this auction...let alone what CLink has on offer. Yet there never seems to be those last day deals because everyone has run out of money.
  23. Related note, I used my eBay bucks on an item two weeks ago. Despite covering the total cost of the item Paypal charged me in full. Three calls later and I still don't have my money back. Ebay blames paypal. FYI.
  24. I love the BSW Conan splash. I also love the DD prelim. I can likely afford neither.
