  1. Was it Basquiat that lived with some friends for a while and painted their refrigeration door as a gift?

I can't remember if it was him.

Yes, that's Basquiat, but it wasn't just his friends, it was his longtime girlfriend who he lived with as well. He used to scrible everywhere. He even gave works to landlords in lieu of rent or he would do a scribble for the proprietor of a restaurant he enjoyed. It really irked him when he would do these things and they would immediately be sold to a gallery. If you're interested in Basquiat, there is an EXCELLENT documentary that was just recently released on DVD called "Radiant Child." Downtown81 is also an excellent time period piece. And though Jeffrey Wright does a wonderful job playing Basquiat in Schnabel's movie, please don't take any of that movie as anything more than entertainment. There are so many inaccuracies and historical warpings that its basically a total piece of fiction. Basquiat admired Schnabel greatly and would always ask him what he though of him - if this movie is his response, well, I don't think he thought much of him at all.

  2. We can agree to disagree, my point wasn't that those in the know would have paid more for the page, but that there was a shot that some corporate executive's wife would have paid 20K for the page for her husband (I'm not trying to be stereotypical so please ignore my stereotypes but men enjoy Zombies more than women but the genders could easily have been reversed) as a present for his/her birthday or just to buy it because they have tons of cash. That particular scene is one of the scenes most commonly associated with the TV series. Those kinds of buyers don't know who people are, but do know when there is a gold star or whatever by an ebay seller's name that they have had many transactions without incident. Feel free to disagree but I want you to understand my reasoning and not disagree with a strawman or misunderstand my reasoning.

Even with this caveat, you are still mistaken as one of these "types" was trying to buy it off eBay and it didn't change the valuation very much.

  3. I agree - the zero feedback aspect doesn't play a role here. It's similar to a Heritage consignment thanks to the provenance of the seller (with it being the equivalent of a $9600 sale on ha.com thanks to the buyer's premium).

This makes no sense. Anyone bidding would have factored in the BP - it wouldn't have sold for $1600 more just because of the BP, the BP would have always factored into the bidding.

On the WD 1 splash, I was in talks to buy it myself and had a small window to buy it for 8K. I thought that that was top of the market and passed but the seller had offers for more but things occured behind the scenes and he eventually decided to pass because he thought he could get more on eBay. The seller wound up taking a bit of a loss on the gamble that he would get more on eBay than selling off eBay.

I would say 8K was true FMV for that splash given the amount of legit interest he had on it at that number, regardless of eBay bidding history.

This is why I totally agree with brendanb438 - especially with OA, you really have to know the full story to truly have an educated opinion.

  4. Finally have almost all of the OA I picked up in hand and wanted to share. The 3 page sequence from Walking Dead #33 is awesome and I can't believe I was able to acquire them - including the page where Michonne gets away with it (and kills a zombie for good measure).

OK, this should be it for awhile, though I would love to pick up another Moore page or a page from 33 (or any other early issues)

  5. I just ordered a new beret, perfected my Thurston Howell III accent, and I am working on my affected lisp...I should be good to go by then.

    meh

In all seriousness, though, I'd love to see more connoisseurship in the OA hobby. I love what the "What If Kirby" website is doing, and enjoy reading Ron Sonenthal's epic write-ups when he posts a piece in his CAF gallery (even if I don't always agree with all of his points). I wish there was a forum where we could have intelligent debates about the art itself, because most of what passes for public discourse in the hobby is closer to cheerleading than anything else. I know most people, including myself, are somewhat reluctant to say anything publicly that might even remotely be construed as critical/negative, for fear of ostracism and reprisal. While I think there is some benefit to that, I think it has also completely stymied the development of critical analysis in the OA world, which is a shame.

fixed that for you...and yes, I wish some of our private discourse could be had on a forum instead

  8. AGREED. Take the lack of secondary market interest in issue 95...multiply that lack of interest by 10...and see where that gets you on 96-102. And...once speculators take a bath on these issues, I think we will certainly see some correction in back issue prices, as I think at least half of the recent movement is directly related to speculation rather than new collectors/new readers.

I think there will be a correction on some but not all issues. I think 1, 19, and 27 will always be the desirable keys of the series.

  9. I need some seriuos Moolah to secure a Billy-book (Pre Robin off course).

Anybody wilin' ta lend me some (thumbs u

FYI - I saw the BR Tec 35 in hand today and there is a fair amount of rust on the top staple.

    yuck. I'm out

It was so unfortunate that I had to pull the lamp over and ask the guy previewing next to me if I was seeing it correctly.
