  1. In an ideal world, it wouldn't make any difference because the stamps are part of the distribution process rather than say, a kid writing his name on all of his comics to stop his brother from pinching them. An interesting question & I'm sure I've heard somewhere that graders don't consider date stamps or distributor stamps when grading because they're part of the process of getting the comics to the readers. Or did I just make that up...
  2. I've often used the term in relation to my work... at the British Library, and in my hobby... ripping decorative frontispieces out of valuable books & flogging them on e-bay. Also, I'd like to be the first to suggest a new bit of terminology for general use by all herein assembled: frontispence: any cover price on a publication designated for sale in the United Kingdom, or any other country using pounds, pence or shillings as currency (ex: Lebanon, South Sudan). note: Not to be confused with "fontispence", which just sounds like you're trying to speak Latin.
  3. Never mind the Bahookies. How did a guy with such stumpy arms ever get through basic training? He can't even wipe his Bahookie.
  4. Last mail call before the hols - 5 quid well spent.
  5. He was played by Patrick Duffy in the TV series and the comic book adaptation of the series.
  6. Seems anticlimactic, somehow. I guess, thinking about it now, that's happened to me too. I have a vague memory from when I was a kid & kept my comics in a big stack in my closet. My Man from Atlantis 2 stuck to my Six Million Dollar Man 4. Made me sad.
  7. What he said. Check out the census as well. High grade pence copies are few and far between & they seem to appeal to high end collectors. How's about you stick up a picture of your AF15?
  8. Well, that ain't no damn good. Did you check under the sofa cushions? I'll start digging a fresh rabbit hole. After the co-opted neo-pagan winter solstice festivities, that is.
  9. Hmm... That doesn't feel like the right answer with the SW2 ppv. A transfer of ink due to being in a damp cargo hold would imply a damp book. That would show water damage, even after the books dried out & that's one problem I don't have with any of the affected Star Wars books I have (or have ever had). What this looks like to me is the uncut sheets of the freshly printed covers were stacked while the ink was still slightly tacky (or whatever the correct term is) & the ink simply stuck to the next sheet in the stack.
  10. Thank you, Juanita. As always, much respect to your probing...umm...nature (?).
  11. Spotted this on the Magazine Collectors thread - Is this news to anyone else? Marwood? Have you ever seen a UK pence price variant on a magazine?
  12. What does the back cover look like? Also, when you find a "dirty" one, is it the same kind of dirty as all the others? Is there a pattern to this filth? Is it ink? Black mould? Petrified bean juice? Can you scrape it off with your thumbnail? I don't think I want that bowl of porridge now...
  13. It's definitely a transfer from the back cover. If you look closely you can see "Street Ball" backwards across the Star Wars logo. Plus... looking at the back cover, this is clearly a backwards R from the Star Wars logo on the front cover. Looks like they got stacked while the ink was still wet, or something. Interesting, but would it not follow from that that there might be similar transferring on the 35c variants? I only ever see this (this clearly at any rate) on the Star Wars 2 pence price variant.
  14. Oh, I see it now. I was looking at it wrong because it's rotated and obscured. What I thought was a big "2" is a sideways "10". So, it's a Thorpe & Porter 10d stamp. Who's the wanker now? Yeah. Still me.
  15. Winkled this out of a stack of Star Wars Weekly & Savage Sword of Conan UK - It's let down by the pen marks... & the back cover - I've already made my money back on the rest of the lot, so I can't complain. It's spending the Christmas break under a stack of archival board.
  16. Not a pence stamp this wanker recognizes, but thanks for the shout-out.
  17. Both tough to find in decent shape. There seem to be fewer #3s about in general. Don't know whether that's representative of the edition as a whole, or just the variants. Also, #2 is virtually impossible to find without the transferred black ink from the "Street Ball" ad on the back cover. I never seem to see this on the 30c or 35c covers.
  18. Grabbed some pence variants this week -
  19. Just posted these in the Marvel UK pence variants thread. Grabbed them on ebay UK for a snip. Both the #8 & #10 have Mark Jewellers inserts -
  20. About 2 days after I complained somewhere that Star Wars pence variants were getting hard to find at a reasonable price, I spotted these on ebay UK with a BIN at just over a tenner - Looking closer, the lot also had a #6 reprint, which, though still a reprint, is pretty rare. And both the #8 & #10 have Mark Jeweller inserts -
  21. Umm... Ooops. Just checked a couple more websites & it looks like the Showcase was a reprint of the CI, Bob Brown just did a new cover for DC. I should have checked a few more sites before I posted. This is what I get for doing this while I'm supposed to be working. You're right, it is interesting that there is no mention of 007 on the covers. Dr. No was the third book published, so he was an established character in literature by the time the film came out. Can't think why DC didn't use their option. It would have made a great series. It's a bit like the whole Doctor Who thing. There was a Dell 4 Color for the Doctor Who and the Daleks film in 1966 & then nothing (at least in the US) until the Marvel Premier in 1980. Go figure.
  22. Had a quick look on GCD. The Classics Illustrated 158a came out in December 1962. Apparently, it was illustrated by 'Norman J Nodel'. Never heard of him myself, but I'm not big on CI stuff. The Showcase 43 came out in April 1963 & was illustrated by Bob Brown. It doesn't look like the DC edition is a reprint, but it does look like the CI is technically the first appearance. Good luck finding one! You've got competition now.
