  1. I can't think of any, but there are so many Atlas titles you never know. Mike
  2. Nice pick up 1 I almost came to Chicage, but had a family visit at the last minute. I would have liked to say hello as our collecting interests seem to be fairly similar, although your knowledge is far greater than mine. Mike
  3. It is a sweet copy - thank you again! You're on fire these days adding to your collection! Mike
  4. For sale in the Heritage Illustration Art auction in October. GEORGE ROZEN (American, 1895-1974) The Shadow cover, March 1932 Oil on canvas 21.5 x 20.5 in. Signed lower left This cover appeared on the March 1932 cover of The Shadow, the eighth issue, and the earliest Shadow pulp cover known to exist. "The Shadow knows. The weed of crime bears bitter fruit, but none more deadly than the criminal genius called the Black Master. Clearly it's a case for the Shadow to uncover this emperor of evil who has turned New York into a city of fear. Not since Sherlock Holmes locked wits with Professor Moriarity have there been such formidable opponents on the battlefield of crime. The Shadow, the elusive voice in the night whose mocking laughter haunts all who have ever heard it: the man of many faces who is all things to all people in the name of justice. And the Black Master whose invisible hand kills the very men who serve him, leaving no trace, no quarter, not even an ounce of pity. Only terror, and a black metal tag which promises more to come. The Shadow vs. the Black Master -- two mysterious legends, equally matched, in a contest of giants. The Shadow. A strange creature clad in black, with the power to cloud men's minds which he learned in the Orient, and a mocking laugh which is the avenger's chilling note of triumph. The Shadow is one of the most exciting suspense figures of all time." From the Estate of Charles Martignette. Condition Report: The inset panel at the lower right was painted on a separate piece of canvas, adhered to the main image; otherwise, this lot is in good condition with only normal wear commensurate with age.
  5. Here is an interesting site I have been referencing - http://www.collectorshowcase.fr/weird_tales_1923.htm It lists every issue of Weird Tales with cover scan, cover artist and a list of the stories and authors. It's in French, but the reference material doesn't require any knowledge of the language. Mike
  6. Last year I bought and read the three volumes of recent Conan reprints in softcover. I then bought the Kull and Bran reprints which I also liked. This got me thinking about buying some of the originals and I started looking into Weird Tales of which I have now purchased 5 issues. I also noticed that Lovecraft, another author I enjoy, wrote for Weird Tales. At the same time I have become aware that ERB wrote for the pulps, but I haven't looked into any of his material. I've also noticed a lot of really great covers in this thread which might be of interest. I have purchased a number of Fiction House 40s comics over the years based on the covers. As you can see, I am pretty new at this, but for the moment will probably focus on Weird Tales, some other adventure stuff like ERB and now and then a cover I really like. Who knows where it will all lead, but as many people in this thread have mentioned, comics are starting to become really expensive for GA and anything newer isn't really a challenge to find. Mike
  7. As I'm new to pulps I'd be interested in some suggestions on the best places to buy them (eBay, dealers, auction houses, etc...). Thx, Mike
  8. One thing I have noticed in Atlas westerns is that the native Americans are generally treated very well. Often the Europeans are the bad guys versus the noble natives. Quite progressive for the 50s given the negative portrayal in many movies of the time. Mike
  9. My experience is that the Germans and Soviets where treated much better than the Asian. I doubt there are any covers with Germans being impales on bayonettes or incinerated by flamethrowers. That being said, there are many, many Atlas books I haven't read and I could be totally wrong. It is interesting what is considered PC in different eras. Much of what the comics code eliminated (violence) is now OK and much of what was not eliminated would now not be allowed (ethnic comments). The changes the world saw in the 20th century were huge and it makes you wonder what things will be like in 2100. Mike
  10. From a historical perspective it is interesting to see what was acceptable in the 50s and is not acceptable today. For some reason, at the time, the issue I read just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm sure I own other comics that I would feel the same way about if I got around to reading them. Sometimes comics have over-the-top characterizations which are obviously used as a story telling devise and you can only laugh at them because they are so stupid, but other times there is stuff that is just vicious and I don't like that. Sorry if my opinion is different from yours. Mike
  11. I agree, very pedestrian. You really don't want that one, go ahead and send it my way. (... grumble grumble grumble... ) Hmmm...Dum Dum Dugan prototype? I guess that Combat Casey and Dum Dum do look alike. I never thought about that before. The only Combat Casey comic I ever owned was so bigoted against Asians that I got rid of it and never bought another. I just didn't feel right owning it. Mike
